Neil,

My brother's friend came over tonight with a multimeter, and that 2A fuse
tested fully open... no resistance at all. Looks like this may be the
culprit. I just hope this, relatively new, Radio Shack digital mulitimeter
didn’t feed anything back into the circuit and screw something else up.

It took a while to figure out how to set the meter ranges… and the first few
readings at some ranges LOOKED LIKE I was getting 10 ohms across the fuse
when I first put the probes on the fuse. I kind of expected to see some
kind of low circuit resistance. I think I remember your saying I should see
.2 ohms if the fuse was good. After screwing around with controls, I
figured how to set the ranges manually (there was an ‘auto’ setting I was
getting odd results from) and set the range to its lowest setting. There I
got .9 ohm across the 5a fuse (the meter wouldn’t zero either… or I couldn’t
figure out how to do it)… and a fully open circuit across the 2a fuse in
question.

So I’m hoping my initial 10 ohm reading was due to the meter not being set
up right, and not because that’s what is actually was before the meter blew
out something else. Haven’t soldered a fuse wire yet or reassembled yet to
see if the system still works, but I thought it was dead anyway… so no big
deal.

The guy brought over a cylindrical 1 inch 2a glass fuse with the metal caps
thinking I might be able to heat the caps off and use the fuse wire inside.
Though he wasn’t sure if the wire would accept solder. Guess this kind of
wire should be available from electronics supply stores, right?

So are you in CA now? Read you saying you’re in forests somewhere. The
forests of the mountains out there are beautiful. I used to backpack in the
Sierra Nevadas a lot and loved it. One of my favorite ways to live!

Matt

Try listing this on EBay. They sell a lot of these over there. You can
define a 'reserve', a mimimum you want for the unit.

  4) Pull HD, connect to 2.5" to 3.5" IDE connector, drop into desktop, copy
necessary install files to HD, then reinsert HD into Libretto. Only takes a
few minutes for transfering hundreds of MB of files over.
  5) Symantec.com Ghost or Laplink.com Laplink or DOS 6.22 Interlink over
parallel port Laplink/DCC compatible parallel port cable. Far faster than a
serial Laplink/DCC cable, although it'll still take about 4-8 hours to xfer
~650MB of files over. Works quickly enough however to let you xfer the entire
Windows install files (meaning versions but Win2K/NT which are larger) in a
short time to install from HD.
  6) CompactFlash/SmartMedia/Iomega Clik!/IBM Microdrive with PCCMIA and
desktop PC adapters. Simply dump files to these devices and copy over.
Assumes they have necessary DOS config.sys drivers however.
  7) Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI card and DOS drivers and SCSI HD/CD drive (eg. Sony 6x
SCSI Discman CD-ROM drive from years ago). Quick and fast.

Lots of other ways, but these are the ones I've used sucessfully in the past.

Good News: Networking under DOS for installation purpose

2001-09-14 Thread Gerhard Kapusta

Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 09:25:43 +0200
From: "Gerhard Kapusta" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Good News: Networking under DOS for installation purpose

Hi!

Many of us know the problem: A Lib without CD is not so easy to install.

2 Methods to install a Lib without CD are well known:
- Prepare the disk in another PC, make it bootable or use floppys to boot
and install the OS from the disk.
- Use a serial cable to another PC, DOS has the capabilities to map a remote
disk to the other computer.
Both have big disadvantages: Many users don't like to open the Lib and the
serial connection needs hours to transfer an installation CD.

There is a third method to copy an installation CD to a Lib: A bootable
floppy with can connect to an existing network. Now I found some (nearly)
ready floppys which do the job. See http://www.bovistech.com/tcpip.htm. I
used http://www.bovistech.com/disks/tcpip/multiboot.zip, but it was
necessary to do some minor changes.

The disk war not directly useable, because there is a mechanical problem: On
my Lib's 100 and 110 there are 2 PCMCIA-Slots but I use a 3com-Xjack-Card
which makes it impossible to insert at the same time the floppy-card. So I
installed DOS, then copied the floppy to the disk and used it from there.
Some edits to remove references to "A:" were necessary. But then it worked!

I also tried to insert the Lib into the enhanced port replicator, to have
additional PCMCIA slots, but I could not find any valid interrupt and I/O
adress to use the network card without card services.

regards
Gerhard
