Your browser IS working - they have NOTHING between the body tags except a

Aha! Someone with both a 'real' email reader, and an eye to peruse the
Internet routing header. Hotmail doesn't afford me that kind of esoteric
look below the surface... But I'm thrilled to have the P120 working so I can
use Eudora 5.0, even if it was a darned sluggish on the 50CT, and I suspect,
a poorly written program from the view of things written in simple, fast,
efficient, and elegant code. I use it not because I love Qualcomm... but to
use ANTHING that, overall, works well enough that Microsoft isn't forcing on
everyone.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]: Huh! .nu ... You're probably not there on the sandy
Pacific shores of Niue I don't imagine?

Actually I did try accessing that site the other night with MSIE & Netscape,

Okay Raymond... I see what youj're saying about things depending on a
person's ability to configure software. The 'mailto' thing never even made
any sense to ME, and I'd just go my merry way pasting 'cmd:unsubscribe' onto
the subject line. This whole 'mailto' thing is nuts as far as I can see any
hope of comprehension of its use reaching the LCD!

Huh?? I was arguing basically the same thing with Pres... I wasn't
advocating mailto... the new changes to the list's taglines are the ones I'd
suggested. I guess Dan or Pres must have set them up. I'm still pushing
for 'with' guys...

My last suggestion was a [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address
that only requires you send ANY email to that address, and you'll be
removed. No commands or anything that thinking, besides finding the
instructions to send email to that address, is required.

*sigh* OK, fubarlibretto-san, forget about my advice until you (a) get rid
of all Microsoft applications on your machine or (b) switch to
Win2000. (Note: I just tried it with IE open and it worked fine. I don't
have OE on my machine, so I can't try that. Maybe it's something they only
introduced in Win2000.)

Nope, as you can see, that the space cuts off the URL.

Also was tried for years.

used.

Yup, OE minimized but Internet Exploder open, same effect, the tab starts
moving around in the window. Tried it with AOL IM as well.

This one has a space between the "e" and the "d".

Note that in this second URL, there is an underscore in the space between

This is neat. But I found in Win98, that trying step 3, the tab thing, with
the mail window open, to read along, causes navigation WITHIN the open mail
window.

However, if you do Windows-M first, to minimize all windows, it works fine.
But you have no windows to tile, which defeats the purpose!

According to RS, the smallest one (5v 175Hz, seems small enough to fit in the case or
perhaps in a little bulge out the side) can drive 30cm^2 ... isn't that plenty?

Hmm ... I'm talking somethign that'll let me read the screen in sunlight, in a car on
a summer's day and so-on ...

Which reminds me ... perhaps someone can answer this, why is it that LCD manufacturers
make the backing of their LCDs BLACK instead of reflective? The LCD itself is
transmissive and the 'backlight' is really a side/bottomlight anyway so you'd think
making it WHITE would make more sense, letting the screen be reflective when the
external lighting was bright enough but still being backlit in the absence of
reflectable light.

I wonder if thats what Sony is doing with their new Clié ...

Hey Dan,

I'm always trying to think just what wording makes communication best with
the LCD. How about adding 'with' after 'line' in this line of the list's
tag lines:

on the message's subject line: cmd:unsubscribe

To create:

on the message's subject line with: cmd:unsubscribe

Wish we had a server that had a program set up like Yahoo Groups. There you
just send email to the unsubscribe address, like
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Another problem with people finding the unsubscribe instructions is that
they're usually at the bottom of posts that have 3-4 huge quoted messages.
It'd be cool if it were possible to insert a header with the info at the top
of each post.

Matt

PS: I've been itching to suggest that we all barrage people who only write
10-15 words in response to huge messages, and don't edit out what's not
relevant, with 200 line junk mail with "EDIT YOUR POSTS" as the subject, and
a brief LCD explaination at the top of the email.

I'm sure this is what the company I contacted said they did. If THEY did

Re: Nuts and bolts of impoving LCD brightness

2001-10-04 Thread David Chien

Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 10:59:31 -0700 (PDT)
From: David Chien <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Nuts and bolts of impoving LCD brightness

A few years ago, there was lots of talk about this.

Man & Machine somewhere back east did the upgrades. Applied sheets of the 3M
microsphere reflective sheeting behind the LCD panel to reflect more of the
incoming light back out and thus increase the brightness of the panel a bit
more than usual. Made things a bit more sunlight legible, but not that much
more.

However, don't expect it to get that much brighter. The Libretto panel will
simply hover around the 100cd level and that's about as good as you'll get.

Some companies out there probably sell compatible 6.4" LCD panels nowadays or
at least something similar. Don't know if case mods would be needed, but
certainly there are brighter LCD color panels produced today due to better
lights, controllers, power converters, etc.

If you've got a really good EE brain, it's a matter of dropping in a brighter
bulb, wiring in the power converter and electronics to handle it, modifying the
case to hold it all (maybe not if you can squeeze it in), and off you go.
After all, the brightness of the panel really mostly just depends on the
brightness of the light source of the panel anyways.

Do you have any idea if the plastic is available anyhwere Press, or if it's
a proprietary item that is manufactured for that firm? Or IS that the firm
that manufactures the plastic unit?

Do you recall the name of the company?

Are you saying that you are still not being removed from the list after

Brace yourself. Simple it isn't but it does work for me (under Win2K, anyhow):

1) Windows key (or Ctrl-Esc): opens the Start menu
2) Esc: closes the Start menu, leaving focus on the Start button
3) Tab twice: First tab puts focus on the QuickLaunch toolbar, second on
the task list
4) "Other Windows key" (also known as context menu key) or Shift-F10: Opens
the menu that includes Tile Windows.

Hope that helps,

I just checked the sewell site, it's up and running. you should try it
again.
i tried to use a USB pcmcia card, forget it.
It will never work. the cardbus PCMCIA is a 32-bit standard, the PCMCIA is
a
16-bit stanard. You are missing 16-bits worth of data connectors and you
won't
ever be able to get a cardbus card to work in a 16-bit PCMCIA slot unless
the
card itself was designed to work both ways (eg. teh Ricoh 8040 SCSI portable
CD-RW drive card).

It's actually putting a piece of plastic UNDER the screen, sandwiched in
there. It does work... I saw their booth at the Dayton Hamvention where they

I'm not responsible for this list but if you just send an email to this list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) with the subject line cmd:unsubscribe it should do
the trick. Put another way, send an email as follows (replace whatever is in
angle brackets as appropriate):

===
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From:
Subject: cmd:unsubscribe

Body:
===

The reason you're getting these emails is because either at some point in
the past you or a friend subscribed you to the list, someone with an email
address very similar to yours tried subscribing to this list and
accidentally misspelt it and ended up subscribing you, or you've recently
got the email address you have now and the PREVIOUS owner of the address has

Hope this helps!

TVM for that! :-)

Can't get it to display Num.Lock though
It's offering me:-
 - Caps Lock LED
 - CD Drive LED
 - Hard Drive LED
 - AC Power LED
 - Battery LED

Still, it's a heck of a lot better than nothing!

But having the information on the title bar of the active Window *has* to be
a whole lot better again...

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Farnell sold them as well ... I'd have a look except my catalogue got borrowed and
never returned (and Farnell won't send me a new catalogue anymore because I'm a
student) ... as I recall though they sold the inverters separately and had a pile of
data next to the entry as well ... perhaps if anyone has any info about the inverter
in the Libretto ...

Having said that, the pictures I've seen of the modified Palm (I lost the URL but it
shouldn't be too hard to find, I might hunt for it tomorrow morning) have the inverter
unit being very small indeed - a little rectangular thing that sat behind the Palm and
looked about the size of 3 AAA batteries next to each other (of course the camera
angle could have been decieving but anything that can practically fit on the back of
the Palm should fit on the back of a Libby ...).

(put that back together!) then I'd be very tempted to find out...I wonder if
it will work from the inverter in the lib? There's enough for four libs in
one hit, but only one inverter :(

It seems that RS electronics (rswww.com) have the stuff at more manageable

suggest power consumption of around 1.5W to give light at 50cd/m2 - anyone

The reason you're getting these emails is because either at some point in the past you
or a friend subscribed you to the list, someone with an email address very similar to
yours tried subscribing to this list and accidentally misspelt it and ended up
subscribing you, or you've recently got the email address you have now and the

Hope this helps!

Well I do know some adventurous PalmPilot user (the old type without the inbuilt
backlight) managed to separate the LCD/touchscreen bit from the reflective backing and
put a small, thin EL panel behind the lot to get what appears to have been a damn
bright backlight ... I wonder if a similar thing in reverse is possible for the
Libretto (ie. turn it into a semi-reflective screen) ...

There is a Toshiba utility that shows the caps/num lock status in the
taskbar...

It's called the "Toshiba System LED Application" (toshled9.exe) and is
available from the Tosh US web site... and me... :o)

Works with all Libbies, and Portege's...

Caps.Lock+Num.Lock indicator utility (was: RE: Key commands and impedance)

2001-10-04 Thread fubarlibretto

Date: Thu, 4 Oct 2001 12:34:04 +0700
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Caps.Lock+Num.Lock indicator utility (was: RE: Key commands and impedance)

Two questions!
<1> Can anyone recommend a Windows utility that shows if Caps.Lock is
on/off?
<2> Can anyone tell me a keyboard shortcut to 'Tile Windows...' without
using
the mouse or mouse buttons?

<1>
In the long distant past I'm sure I've seen a utility offered that displays
things - like the time - in the title bar of the top (active) window, no
matter what program the top (active) window actually belongs to, so I guess
it's possible... and that maybe someone on the list has already found
something suitable and given it a whirl?

I presume we're all in the same boat and have no Caps.Lock indicator light
unless we are using an external keyboard?

I'm using Win'98 now / hopefully Win'2k soon - on a Libretto 110

Recently saw the following - maybe the same (or similar) utility would serve
here too:-

<2>
The other question is not exactly a Libretto-specific question, I know, but
as I've managed to incorporate a previous thread subject referring to 'Key
commands', and I'm already here... ;-)

What is the keyboard command for bringing up the Taskbar (the panel 'under'
the Start Menu)? I want to 'Tile Windows Horizontally' and 'Tile Windows
Vertically' without using the mouse or mouse buttons. Once I have the
'focus' on the Taskbar, I can do this via the
menu/options/properties key, or whatever the official name is for that
'other' Windows key with the menu/pointer icon.

Windows+Tab gets me close, but the 'focus' is on the individual 'Task'
buttons; I need the focus to be as if I'd clicked on the actual Taskbar
background, where a right-click (or the 'other' windows key) brings up this
menu:-

 - Toolbars
 - ---
 - Cascade Windows
 - Tile Windows Horizontally
 - Tile Windows Vertically
 - ---
 - Minimize All Windows
 - ---
 - Properties

I'm sure it's dead simple, but I just can't seem to find it by trial and
error...

TIA!

Sincerely... Steve

The easy way to test this is just to press the switch with a pencil or
similar...

If the system behaves as expected when you tickle the switch, but not when
you physically close the lid, it suggests some mechanical movement that the
greater forces from the hinge are causing. If the machine has been bounced,
there could be all sorts of invisible cracks etc - though around that end of
the machine, I'd expect the RAM to be affected as it seems very vulnerable -
and that usually causes either failure to boot or intermittent hard
crashing.

Here's the biz on the BIOS controls (for the 50/70 - YMMV for later models)
- the windows utility is just another way of getting to them, and you have
to use two (the system thingy and the hairy lightbulb) to make it do what
you want if you go through the desktop rather than direct.

It appears that the esc key doesn't always get you into the bios if you have
a hibernated image...

in the OTHERS section:

o Power-up Mode: this should really be called power *down* mode.
- Hibernation: save the ram and screen contents to hard disk when
the power switch is pressed (or screen closed if enabled),
restore from disk when the system is powered up again.
   - OPTION: Standby Time: After the system is allegedly powered
down, it turns of the disk and processor and goes into
standby. At this point, it can be restarted instantly by
hitting the power button or opening the screen (if enabled).
After a delay equal to the standby time, the image is written
to disk and the system closed down completely.
Note the two special cases: 0min means it saves to disc
immediately, and Unlimited means 'keep things in memory until
the battery dies'. In all cases, it saves to disc first so
losing your battery shouldn't lose data.
- Boot: turn the machine off/on from power switch or screen closure
(if enabled). Do not save any data. May talk to the operating
system and issue a shutdown command but depends on operating
  system.

o CPU Cache: Controls how the CPU buffers data between itself and the
  main memory. Experts only.
- Disabled: Make the machine very slow. Use only for diagnostics,
or if you have a particularly badly behaved piece of software
with self-modifying code that defeats the cache logic.
- Enabled:
   - OPTION: Write-through: Every memory write is copied
immediately to the main memory. This is very safe but means
that all writes are restricted in speed to that of the main
 memory.
   - OPTION: Write-back: Memory writes only occur when the space in
the cache is required for something else, or at shutdown. This
is faster for the vast majority of code, and should probably
 be the default option.

o System Auto Off: Only appears if 'Hibernation' is selected. This sets
the delay between the last keypress/mouse movement and an automatic
hibernation. Unfortunately it can't tell the difference between 'the
user has given up for a while' and 'the user is part-way though a ten-
hour compilation phase' so I tend
