[LIB] Help on Windows configuration files - Lib 110
Date: Sat, 27 Dec 2003 16:16:03 -0200 From: Lazar Krym [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Help on Windows configuration files - Lib 110 Retransmitting - I didn't see the mesasage bellow. Tks, Lazar -Mensagem original- De: Lazar Krym [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Enviada em: terça-feira, 23 de dezembro de 2003 15:50 Para: Libretto Assunto: Help on Windows configuration files - Lib 110 I do not write often to this list, but I read most of the messages. And I need now some help. I recently have changed the 4.3G HD by a 20G HD in my Lib 110 (64M RAM, WIN98SE). Windows, all the Lib drivers and my programs were installed from scratch. The problem I'm having is that the Lib is very slow. (very, very, very). As an exemple, it spends around 1,5 minutes to open/change a Window Explorer window. I am not an expert in configuring Windows, but I think that the configuration files could be changed for improvements, mainly in memory management. An indication that something is wrong in those files can be that, when booting with an IBM Microdrive inserted in the PCMCIA slot, I get a STACK OVERFLOW error message, and the boot stops. No trouble when inserting the microdrive after the boot is completed. The current configuration files ara attached. Thanks in advance for any help and a great Christmas and New Year for you all Lazar Krym ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. Anyone with faster HDDs in their Libbys notice a little vibration from the drive? More to the point, I wonder if these ultra high speed (over twice as fast as the Libretto's original drive!) hard drives cause any power problems or heat problems for the poor little Librettos! I know my Fujitsu 20 gig drive (4000 rpm or so IIRC) heats up more than the original drive did ... Power consumption was the 1st factor I considered when looking around for a new HDD. Like you Raymond, I live where it can get pretty hot. I never got my L100 to be stable clocked to 266 in the heat here. Once or twice my 20GB HDD got hot enough to shut down my stock 120MHz L70. But the specs for power consumption on this DK23FB-40, and many of the newer 40GB+ 5400+ RPM HDDs I checked were actually the same as my 20GB Hitachi. The technology seems to have gotten more efficient. Don't know about the 7200 beasts though. I'm still having problems with posts coming to my Hotmail account days after they're posted. Is anyone else having this problem? Matt _ Tired of slow downloads? [LIB] Slackware 8
Date: Sun, 28 Dec 2003 10:43:16 -0800 From: PhotoEngineering [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Slackware 8 I just installed Slackware on my 110CT. Marvelously easy to do. It did take some time since I didn't have any installation hardware except the hard drive, plus I am using Windows tools to control my booting process and they are incompatible with other operating systems. Great learning experience. This is the correct process to install it from the hard drive using a bootable DOS partition. Download the Dosboot, a, and ap directories from the Slackware Linux site. Unzip install.zip into the DOS partition keeping the directory structure. Install a Linux kernel in the now cr5eated Linux directory. Create the Linux partition and format it. Disable any boot managers after making the DOS partition the primary bootable. Shut down and reboot to DOS. Edit the Linux.bat file in the Linux directory to point to the Linux kernel. Run the file. Linux will boot and make a tempory installation. Log in and run setup. Install into the Linux partition. Configure and be sure to install Lilo as the boot manager since, to be honest, I don't think a person can run Windows software with non-windows systems without problems. Select manual installation during the Lilo setup to make sure all bootable drives are found on the computer. Exit setup and reboot into Linux and you will then have a nicely running basic installation. Very easy--no? Tks, Lazar Lazar... I wonder if you're having the same problems receiving Libretto list messages that I am. Days, and sometimes weeks will go by, and I get no mail from the list that most other members are getting. I have to go to the archives to read mail, and all the posts there are at least a couple days old. But here's my reply to your original post, as well as one from David Chien. Let me know if you've received these already: --- From: Matt Hanson [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Lazar Krym [EMAIL PROTECTED] I do not write often to this list, but I read most of the messages. Thanks in advance for any help and a great Christmas and New Year for you all Lazar Krym As soon as the system has booted, go to 'Start Menu | Settings | Control Panel' and the 'Performance' tab and check 'System Resources'. Anyting 90% is good. I can even tolerate mid-80%s depending. You may have a bunch of apps starting. Is there a bunch of icons sitting in the system tray at the right end of the taskbar by any chance? Go 'Start Menu | Run' and type in 'msconfig', hit Enter, and go to the 'Startup' tab to turn off everything you can. Only 'Exporer' is needed, but you'll want 'systray' too. You can go back and re-enable anything you may want. Otherwise The current configuration files ara attached. Attached files are not permitted on this list, attachment has been removed. Dan turned that off last year when viruses start popping up in attachments. Matt --- From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1) turn on DMA mode for this drive. 2) make sure you didn't damage the motherboard or RAM chips above the HD bay when you inserted the new HD. it can happen and others, rarely, have killed their librettos such. 3) make sure there's no virus on your computer. 4) make sure there's no hacks or other such things with windows. = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ _ Take advantage of our limited-time introductory offer for dial-up Internet access. http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. Well the funny thing is, I just noticed that the 800MB stock HDD that came with my L50 is actually 750mA (all newer laptop hard drives that I've seen like my 20 gig are rated at 500mA or below) ... I haven't measured its current draw but it's enough to cause my external USB2.0 HDD case problems (and that's rated for hard drives 500mA or below) ... so perhaps you're right. I'm still curious about the heat though ... my 7200RPM desktop hard drives run pretty darn hot unless I have a fan blowing right at them ... - Raymond --- /~\ | | Does fuzzy logic tickle?| | ___ | My HDD has no reverse.
