Check with microsoft. recall there was some fdisk update for windows
DOS or
something that fixed this problem on large HDs
Hmmm... Okay. But if I do that, is there any reason I'd still need to
install EZ-DRIVE again if I'm just running flavors of Windows?

RE: [LIB] Another source for Anti-Reflective film.

Thanks for posting this info Georges… It looks like a pretty
straightforward process. Between these instructions and David’s, I ought to
be able to get the film laid down pretty well.

Hi Matt,

I received the instructions with the film.
I think that the wet method can be useful on bigger screens than the one on
the Libretto.
I find it quite scary to wet a screen in fact. As I am not very patient I
did it the dry way, without a problem.

Here is what the instructions say.

There are two ways in which the film can be laminated to the LCD screen;
dry lamination and wet lamination. Dry lamination is more direct but also
more prone to errors, especially when laminating an area as large as a
laptop LCD display. Wet lamination requires a longer time before the
display can be used but is much less sensitive to errors in lamination

Dry Lamination
Remove the liner that protects the adhesive and while only allowing the
very edge of the film to touch, place the film’s edge squarely on the
surface to be laminated. Using an ink pen with a round shaft or a squeegee
put pressure right where the film starts on the surface. DO NOT LET THE
FILM FALL DOWN AND TOUCH THE SURFACE OR THE FILM WILL HAVE MANY BUBBLES.
Place the pen or squeegee in the curve created by holding the film up while
one edge is ‘glued’ to the surface and in one smooth motion move the pen
down the film onto the LCD screen. Finally remove the protective liner on
the anti-reflective side on the film and reassemble the GBA. If there are
air gaps around the edges of the screen, run a fingernail around the edges
of the LCD screen to push the air out of that gap.

Wet lamination
You need approximately 100 ml distilled water with 5 drops liquid dish soap
(mix thoroughly)

Wet a clean cloth with the distilled water with dishwashing soap and wet
the surface of the LCD. Rub the water mixture over the entire surface of
the LCD – make sure that the entire surface is wetted with a thin layer of
water – remove the excel water but make sure a thin layer of water is left
behind.
Remove the liner that protects the adhesive and while only allowing the
very edge of the film to touch, place the film’s edge squarely on the
surface to be laminated. Using an ink pen with a round shaft or a squeegee
put pressure right where the film starts on the surface. DO NOT LET THE
FILM FALL DOWN AND TOUCH THE SURFACE OR THE FILM WILL HAVE MANY BUBBLES;
HOWEVER, IF THE FILM DOES FALL AND TOUCH THE SURFACE, IN THIS CASE THE
BUBBLES CAN BE PUSHED OUT FROM UNDER THE FILM.
Place the pen or squeegee in the curve created by holding the film up while
one edge is ‘glued’ to the surface and in one smooth motion move the pen
down the film onto the LCD screen. Wipe excess water from screen and push
any bubbles out from under the antireflective film. Allow the film to dry 1
or 2 days in a room at 25 °C to 30°C before removing the protective film on
the anti-reflective side of the film. A clear defect free lamination should
result.

They recommend two methods to apply the film: the wet and the dry one.
The dry one worked beautifully for me. With some patience, millimeter per
millimeter the film sticks to the screen and there is nothing else to do
in order to have a perfect black surface. Not a single bubble left. Just
a matter of working slowly.
I don't see any link to the processes on their website Georges. It must
have come packaged with the film. If you could condense the processes for
us, I'm sure a lot of us would be really interested in hearing how they
go.

yes there is. A good distributer keeps them properly and doesn't lie about
how old they are.

2: If you're looking at $10USD a cell for a pack that gives you 5 hours of
Windows runtime or $7USD for a 6-cell pack that gives you 3 hours of
Windows runtime, I know which one I'll pick!
The 7 dollar one? Why, when it only gives half the battery life and will
need to be replaced in six months or less? Why not just rig a nimh or nicad
system in? You'll get equivilent battery life and only spend 10 bucks for
replacement cells. Plus the cells will last a couple years or better.

There's a fellow selling them on Ebay right now, (Not me - I bought one

Check with microsoft. recall there was some fdisk update for windows DOS or

It's been talked about a LONG time ago on this list - search Libretto Mailing
List Archives. Japanese only model, almost never found outside Japan, a few
sell on Yahoo Auctions Japan today, and you can still buy one and play if you
can stand the super slow processor.

Mostly a 'curiosity' thing, a collectors item, but otherwise, even a
Palm/Sony PDA today with built-in WiFi can run rings around it (eg. Sony TJ37
with Wi-Fi & digicam) or even a Sharp SL-C860 Linux PDA palmtop.

You can get pictures off Yahoo Auctions Japan and searching Yahoo Japan.

Otherwise, specs are about the same as L20, and that's about that.

Re: [LIB] Transfer speeds revisited but again - Firewire

From: "Matt Hanson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: [LIB] Transfer speeds revisited but again - Firewire
From: Raymond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I guess it depends ... if you're going to be using firewire on your
libretto (through a firewire PCMCIA card) then the point is moot -
the bottleneck is still there (you're still going through the PCMCIA
interface).
Oh yeah... I'm talking about using one on the Libby. I recall people
discussing it on the list here along with USB2, and just assumed people
were getting faster transfer speeds.

That plus from what I understand, the PCMCIA interface, at a hardware
level, is at least as fast, if not faster than your hard drive anyway.
Hmmm... rereading your last comment above, I'm not sure what you're saying.
On one hand it sounds like you're saying the PCMCIA port will limit transfer
speed. But then you're talking about HDD speed which, esp. on this new 5400
rpm Hitachi, you're talking about the PCMCIA port being, "..at least as
fast, if not faster than your hard drive anyway."

Wouldn't a firewire PC card with an onboard controller speed up the
connections between the PCMCIA interface with the HDD over what the CPU is
capable of? People have been putting firewire and USB2 cards in their
Libbys haven't they? I'd think they must be speeding things up noticeably.

Matt

But from what you were saying in your post (link to archives below), I was
assuming that the on-board controllers on the firewire and USB2 cards would
make a significant difference in transfer speeds through the PCMCIA port...
no?
Opps... forgot to clip the end of my last post... tsk... tsk...

RE: [LIB] Another source for Anti-Reflective film.

2004-03-16 Thread GEORGES PITROPAKIS
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 2004 16:27:02 +
From: "GEORGES PITROPAKIS" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: [LIB] Another source for Anti-Reflective film.
Hi Matt,

I received the instructions with the film.
I think that the wet method can be useful on bigger screens than the one on
the Libretto.
I find it quite scary to wet a screen in fact. As I am not very patient I
did it the dry way, without a problem.

Here is what the instructions say.

There are two ways in which the film can be laminated to the LCD screen; dry
lamination and wet lamination. Dry lamination is more direct but also more
prone to errors, especially when laminating an area as large as a laptop LCD
display. Wet lamination requires a longer time before the display can be
used but is much less sensitive to errors in lamination

Dry Lamination
Remove the liner that protects the adhesive and while only allowing the very
edge of the film to touch, place the film’s edge squarely on the surface to
be laminated. Using an ink pen with a round shaft or a squeegee put pressure
right where the film starts on the surface. DO NOT LET THE FILM FALL DOWN
AND TOUCH THE SURFACE OR THE FILM WILL HAVE MANY BUBBLES. Place the pen or
squeegee in the curve created by holding the film up while one edge is
‘glued’ to the surface and in one smooth motion move the pen down the film
onto the LCD screen. Finally remove the protective liner on the
anti-reflective side on the film and reassemble the GBA. If there are air
gaps around the edges of the screen, run a fingernail around the edges of
the LCD screen to push the air out of that gap.

Wet lamination
You need approximately 100 ml distilled water with 5 drops liquid dish soap
(mix thoroughly)

Wet a clean cloth with the distilled water with dishwashing soap and wet the
surface of the LCD. Rub the water mixture over the entire surface of the LCD
– make sure that the entire surface is wetted with a thin layer of water –
remove the excel water but make sure a thin layer of water is left behind.
Remove the liner that protects the adhesive and while only allowing the very
edge of the film to touch, place the film’s edge squarely on the surface to
be laminated. Using an ink pen with a round shaft or a squeegee put pressure
right where the film starts on the surface. DO NOT LET THE FILM FALL DOWN
AND TOUCH THE SURFACE OR THE FILM WILL HAVE MANY BUBBLES; HOWEVER, IF THE
FILM DOES FALL AND TOUCH THE SURFACE, IN THIS CASE THE BUBBLES CAN BE PUSHED
OUT FROM UNDER THE FILM.

The
dry one worked beautifully for me. With some patience, millimeter per
millimeter the film sticks to the screen and there is nothing else to do
in order to have a perfect black surface. Not a single bubble left. Just a
matter of working slowly.
I don't see any link to the processes on their website Georges. It must
have come packaged with the film. If you could condense the processes for
us, I'm sure a lot of us would be really interested in hearing how they go.

assuming that the on-board controllers on the firewire and USB2 cards would
make a significant difference in transfer speeds through the PCMCIA port...
no?

However if you're using another laptop then it's a different story. I have
a
friend with a Dell notebook who gets faster transfer rates off a firewire
hard
disk pack (7200rpm desktop hard disk) than off his laptop's internal hard
disk,
for instance. Then again you'll need the really expensive high speed
professional CF cards to get that sorta speed anyway - if I'm not mistaken
your
average run-of-the-mill CF card is slower than the PCMCIA interface to
begin
with.
Actually, I have a 512MB microdive. From this quote on the other URL I
referenced (below), the microdives can achieve some impressive transfer
speeds:

"Also interesting is that the 1 GB IBM Microdrive has far greater
throughput
than a standard Flash Memory card (certainly for writing) and that it's
apparent
that even the latest digital cameras aren't able to write at these kinds
of
speeds (though some Pro cameras can)."

Subject: Another source for Anti-Reflective film.
Hello all !

Always a pleasure reading those posts that help me keeping my Libby alive.
It is extensively used as a GPS now and as a backup PC with an internet
access, photo and music repository when I travel in Europe or the US.
Lately I missed a nice opportunity to get a piece of anti-flare film, so I
made my own search.
I found this address on the net.

http://www.aspotbellypig.com/GBA_page.html

I ordered a piece of film large enough to give it two or three tries because
I know how dexterous I am. The big advantage is that there is no need to buy
a huge piece of film. It will be cut as you wish.

They recommend two methods to apply the film: the wet and the dry one. The
dry one worked beautifully for me. With some patience, millimeter per
millimeter the film sticks to the screen and there is nothing else to do in
order to have a perfect black surface. Not a single bubble left. Just a
matter of working slowly.

All in all it is fast and efficient. For the rest it seems to me that it is
like other films described here. I have no way to compare but I used the
Libretto in the car after the treatment on a sunny afternoon and it seems to
me that yes the film makes a huge difference. The first spectacular visible
effect though is the great contrast I get now from the screen. Again, I wish
I could compare with another Libretto, side by side

Just my two cents, I have absolutely no interest in that company. If someone
else tries them please let me know.

George
