I went through this for the past 2 weeks and as you can surmise I am still
getting the mailings. Considering this is a computer usergroup I find it
more than interesting the subsciption service does not work. Possibly owned
by that guy in CA that shouldn't ever manufacture automobiles.

I constanly receive your emails, today I have had to go through over 200
alone this is a total waste of my time and would be grateful if you could
do
something that would prevent me from receiving them.

I'm not responsible for this list but if you just send an email to this list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) with the subject line cmd:unsubscribe it should do
the trick. Put another way, send an email as follows (replace whatever is in
angle brackets as appropriate):

===
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
From: the email address you recieve the messages at
Subject: cmd:unsubscribe
Cc:
Bcc:
Body:
===

The reason you're getting these emails is because either at some point in
the past you or a friend subscribed you to the list, someone with an email
address very similar to yours tried subscribing to this list and
accidentally misspelt it and ended up subscribing you, or you've recently
got the email address you have now and the PREVIOUS owner of the address has
subscribed to the list.

Hope this helps!

- Raymond

Subject: Re: rex

The Rex is manufactured offshore (of the US) and is sold under other banners
outside of the US. It was originally developed and maketed by Frankin who
then sold the US (which was all the Franklin rights) rights to Xircom which
has now been acquired by Intel. I suspect that because of the poor marketing
by Franklin and Xircom (almost none except for a short stint at Radio Shack
which promoted it), problems with the initial runs of the 6000 and
temperature sensitive screens (blue out if it approaches body temperature it
will soon fade out of sight. I really enjoy my 5000. The software is a BIG
plus. It works with a wide range of apps including Lotus Notes and Organizer
and the Palm. I do have a Palm which I carry in a briefcase and use Notes in
the office and Organizer at home. The Notes to Palm app os the same price as
the 5000 was and with the 5000 I can synch Notes to Organizer without having
to go through exports and import routines. A few have bought the 5000 just
for the Notes to Palm connectivity since it is the same prices as the Lotus
app and more stable.

It appears that the software for the 6000 will not expand beyond Outlook
which I will not use because of several reasons including virus and lack of
features of Organizer.

WIN98 reinstall

2001-09-15 Thread Brian Levy

From: Brian Levy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: WIN98 reinstall

I need to reinstall my Win98 to the 110. I have the original diskset
including the bootdisk.

To do the install I purchased a PORT NW24XCD which on the face of the box
says it is specifically designed for the Libretto. It is marketed by Targus.
  My problem.

I've copied the boot disk to another disk and modified the config.sys as per
the Toshiba instructions and while the cd is recognized before the format
after the format it comes up as not recognized. The instructions to the Port
drive are different from the Toshiba's and I've tried it. Also, to no avail.

Has anyone used this drive to reinstall Win95/98? If so could you please put
me on the right course. Any other hints?

Re: libretto sucessor?

From: Brian Levy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: libretto sucessor?

I use the REX 5000 with my Libretto and ofc laptop and sync with both Lotus
Notes and Lotus Organizer. On my Libretto, I also have it sync to my Palm
M100. I had some difficulty getting the sync coordinated but finally got it
to work with contacts, to-dos and calendar when I eliminated catagories.
Still working on the memo/notepad. The limitations of the REX really is not
a problem since I cary the Libretto with my almost 100% of the time and keep
it in hibernation mode. I use the Organizer and update all other units from
it every business day. I keep the REX in my pocket for those times (lunch,
etc.) when I have left the Libretto behind. I do agree the input ability is
a bit tough but with time I've learned to use shortcuts to speed entry up.
I'm not sure why I bother with the M100 except I bought it used for cheap
money. It stays on my desk at the house.

Subject: Re: libretto sucessor?

What I was specifically noting in the design of the Toshiba handheld was the
storage space that, using the 1GB microdrive, was approaching a practical
and useful amount.

I'm an old Zaurus fan myself, and no lover of Windows CE. Yet I use a CE
handheld because I don't want to bother with tweaking various proprietary
sync systems.

For me, the instant on is the single biggest factor for CE or other handheld
OS's: I just don't have time for a boot sequence on the road. So as
handhelds approach laptop specs in terms of processor speed, RAM, and
storage space, a successor to the Libretto will only be better by virtue of
having instant on, even if I have to accept Windows CE as the price. (I'd
sure like just a FEW slightly useful apps, though!)

Alas, no proprietary device is likely to even have a chance unless it can
demonstrate vast superiority in some area: portable information appliances
are going to be appendages of some home-based unit, at least until wireless
becomes a real force. My old Zaurus does almost as much as the Mako seems
to, and while the Rex is a neat form factor, I can never get one to reliably
sync (doubtless my incompetence), and the extremely limited ability to input
data takes it out of contention as a useful device, for me.

The ultimate goal is a pocketable widget with instant on, full and total
duplication of any and all of my information and apps(or immediate access
thereto), acceptable battery life (which is why I don't like color screens,
at this point) and wireless full internet access. Someday, we can hope.

David said:

Not a Libretto successor, just another boring Windows CE palmtop.

1GB microdrives in a palmtop have already been done on the Palms.

The Sharp Zaurus (Japanese version) provides far more features and
functionality if you're to buy a japanese pda. In the USA, simply buy a
Palm
OS palmtop - they've taken up 80% of the market share, have more programs

support and accessories than any other platform, and can simply be
considered
the 'standard'. Too many dead WinCE palmtops from the past not used anymore

why bother with a grayscale screen?).

Wow! You guys are sadists! Poor little mousepad. Actually, I think Toshiba
had a bit of sadistic humor when it invented the mouse arrangement. Wonder
why they did not work out an offshoot to the IBM pencil eraser setup on the
keyboard. It should not have added any size, especially to the 100/110.

give any instructions on doing this. Any instructions will be helpful. Also,
in monitoring the threads I have begun to wonder whether the Librettos are

Re: 50 ct Case

From: Brian Levy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: 50 ct Case

I searched for case for my 110 which did not have the heft of a computer
case or briefcase. After trying several, I found a case by Heritage with a
front zippered pocket that holds the 110CT and can hold the replicator and
pwr supply. The inside has a 3 ring binder that I don't need and slots for
legal pads, floppies and cds as well as file folder space. Cost was about
$20US. The smaller cases would not hold the pads, files, etc needed for
meetings and travel while the computer cases are too much of a public
announcement and brief cases either allowed the computer to flop or were off
balance with the computer put in. The only minus to the case is the zipper
is around the bottom to get into the case (not the 110 pouch) and more than
once I forgot to zipper it and had to pick up floppies, cds, etc. I am
getting used to it. The big plus is that wherever I go for meetings, etc.,
the Libretto goes. Previously it would stay in the office for the client
meetings all too often. For the 50, it would do even better becasue of the
smaller case.

Hey guys...

WIN98, I decided last weekend that the 95B was running
exceptionally well, and had no real problems to speak

and have floppy/CDROM supported by a floppy boot.

New issue I'm running Win2KPro on my home PC, and
would like to run Outlook 2K on my Libretto and have
them sync and work together .. I've tried everything I
can find (ActiveSync, Intellisync, Direct Cable
Connect (COM1, serial)) Network, TCP/IP What am I
missing here?

I've read all I can find in regards to offline folders
(and it seems to require Exchange Server each time) -
I'm try to find a product to keep two full versions of
Outlook synched - not Pocket Outlook , not WinCE, just
two regular versions of Oulook and via Netbeui or
TCP/IP preferably - the Libby is on my home network,
no problem - just can't get the two installs to play
nice...

I've installed and removed - reinstalle and rebooted
my way through the last week or so wrestling with this
one.. anyone else got this setup and got it
working??

Thanks in advance..

O/S question

2001-04-08 Thread Brian Levy

Date: Sun, 08 Apr 2001 18:02:42 -0400
From: "Brian Levy" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: O/S question

In reading the several threads about installing the various versions of
Win98 (SE, ME), I began to wonder and thought I'd ask the group - why go
through the hassle of installing these systems as opposed to just keeping
the Win98 that came with the 110CT? No, I'm serious. Actually, what I'm
looking for is what improvements do these flavors of Win98 have over the
original release for the Libretto that warrants the upgrade. I'm using Win98
on the 110CT and my home PC and use Windows 2000 on my office laptop
(company issued it). So far I have not had any problems with 98 on the 110.
Admittedly, I don;t use the USB port in my replicator nor the infrared
device. I am in process of considering a network with my home pc and my
son's and in preparing, have added an ether net card that the computer
seems to recognize. I can't get it to work with the pc using a wire between
the 2 and assume I need the hub. I'll admit to my ignorance for these
networks, being used to UNIX systems in this regard.

Re: Screens

2001-04-03 Thread Brian Levy

Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 10:44:05 -0400
From: "Brian Levy" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Screens

I picked up my 110CT as a factory refurb in Toronto (supposed to have been
the last off their executive program). I also bought the expanded
replicator. I'm using Win98 as installed at Toshiba. I also recently started
using the suspend feature as I take it back and forth to work daily. At
home, I was using it as a desktop, with an attached keyboard, mouse and
monitor. It actually was going to be my "main" computer and I was going to
relegate my Pentium 100mhz as a test platform for Linux or reinstall SCO
Unix which I had used for years. My wife messed up this plan and bought me a
Compaq from a computer store going out of business. Hence, having only room
for 1 monitor o the desk I had started using the Libreeto only with the LCD
100% at home, one the road and at work. I think I'll do something about the
situation at home.

As to the suspend feature, I quickly found out about the problem you
mentioned and found that I needed to remount it on the port and after a
couple of power button hits, it will boot then I can shutdown and unmount
without any problem. Not a real problem for me other than procedural
training since I use it at night, shut it down and unmount it. First thing
in the morning I turn it on to review my schedule, update my REX (really
neat with the 110CT, sort of like having 2 PDAs), and close the cover.

The only time I've had a problem with the enhanced replicator was recently
when the computer decided to created a new hardware configuration while
docked. Possibly I messed something up b/c I was attempting to work with a
network card which I had not done before. After it would not boot correctly
in standalone. I finally deleted all but the default configuration, and
allowed it to reconfigure first in standalone mode and then in the dock.
Since then no problem. I've had the unit for just a year so - knock on wood.
I do not use the infrared port or USB so I may have an issue but don't know
it.

I'm not sure what BIOS my unit has and I'm not sure how to check.

It is like having the best of both worlds though, with the full-size
keyboard, monitor and mouse when I'm at my desk. And the LCD screen doesn't
get any hours on it this way as it is blanked automatically when using the
external monitor port or closing the lid.

I've used the 100 and 110's as my only computers using the 2 kinds of port
replicators (docks) ever since the 100 first came out. I use the PS/2 port
for the keyboard and the serial port for the mouse when using the
non-intelligent dock. The monitor-out port works very well on both docks.
The enhanced dock doesn't work very well with my 110 for some reason. So
much for enhancements.

What I have learned using W95 on the 100 and W98SE on the 110 is that
neither likes the suspend, resume, or any other shortcut to undocking. They
ultimately result in having to reset the machine, if not after the first
cycle, surely after a few times. The only thing that I've found that works
reliably time after time is simply to shut down the computer prior to
undocking, then go through the whole normal rebooting process again once you
have taken it out of the dock. This is kind of a pain though and I'd
appreciate any tips you all could offer on this topic. I'm using BIOS 7.30
on my 110 with W98SE if that makes any difference.

thought
  until now.

Depends on what conditions you use it in. About 1000-5000 hours for most
LCD
panels before the light diminishes to 50% brightness, which you can then
replace. The LCD panel itself will last decades if not exposed to extreme
temperatures and if it's not exposed to direct sunlight for hours on end
(any
and all direct sunlight exposure of LCD anything - watches, laptops, etc -
will
eventually result in darkening and failure of the display.)

Re: 110 enhanced port replicator problem

From: "Brian Levy" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: 110 enhanced port replicator problem

My 110CT has until this weekend had not problems. This weekend, I went from
the expanded replicator to laptop and when it booted it went through a new
hardware configuration. Thereafter, it would not recognize the replicator
and attachments including the ps. I finally deleted all configurations save
the default, turned everything off and had lunch. I placed it in the
replicator, turned it on and it went through a hardware configuration and
added a new config. It now recognizes when I use it standalone and with the
extended port. The only thing it now does is come up with the pmcia warning
when I pull my Xircom PDA card which it did not do before, though it would
pop up if I pulled the modem. I have not tried the port replicator since the
problem since it sees little use.

I've had the unit since about March 2000 (it was a factory executive refurb)
with the original Windows 98 from the Libretto discs. Never had this problem
until Saturday. Could be a result of popping in a new pmcia card for an
ethernet which I previously had not used. I normally keep a floppy,
fax/modem plugged in and have a parrellel port Backpack CR-ROM on the unit
with a mouse, external keyboard and monitor. Additionally I use the Xircom
5000 PDA with no problem.

It is sad this machine was not a marketing success. I find it so much
better than anything I've seen to date. The CE machines don't cut it for me
since I need it for Lotus Notes, various US and Canada tax software and
research applications and I use Lotus Smartsuite. While 64 megs is
acceptable, 128 would do a bit better. For my applications 233 mhz does not
really cause a problem since I use I for business. It is small enouth to fit
in a thin carry case with a side pocket therefore not requiring a laptop
case (giveaway for the profit minded).

If anyone has a 50/70 in good condition they are willing to part with, my
son (13) has his heart set on one. Please email me.

I used to use an EPR daily with my 'old' 100. It setup the 2nd hardware
profile automatically the first time I used it and really, it was
trouble-free. Although I never did get the boot screen with the dock image
you mentioned, Dan.
When I upgraded to a 110, I tried the same EPR I was using with the 100, EPR
Model No. PA2719U, Serial No. 58015836, and now I get this strange hissing
noise from the 110's speaker whenever I put a PCMCIA card in the dock. I
have tried deleting the dock hardware profile, checking the volume(s) when
on dock profile and everything else I can think of and have had to abandon
using it because of the noise. I have also checked, and there are no
reptiles living inside the unit that I can see.
What-o-what could this bee?

I'm having a funny problem with an enhanced port replicator that I
just bought. I exchanged it once, but the new one does the same thing.
However, a slightly older one that I have access to works fine.

Often when I attempt to power on the Libretto in the dock the power
light comes on but the disk light does not, and the system just sits
there for as long as I have cared to wait. It doesn't even put up
the Toshiba screen (which normally comes after one or two blinks of
the disk light.) The reset button has no effect unless I first power
down the dock. With power removed from the dock, the reset button causes
the system to display the Toshiba screen (without the picture of the
dock) and come up. The reset button itself also often provokes the hang
if the dock is powered on.

The problem seems to come in several levels of intensity. At first I
though it might be heat related, but sometimes it works hot and fails
when cool. When the system is being most cooperative several power
cycles
will work, but a reset will often hang. When it is being less
cooperative
only one in several power cycles will work without hanging and every
reset
will hang unless the power to the dock is off. Sometimes the Toshiba
screen
with dock picture is corrupt with extra red pixels here and there, and
   "Starting Windows 98" comes
