Guest account in win2k is disabled per default. that's not to say that's
the only issue you'll have - but be careful about what services you do try
to disable - on a whim i decided to try to slim mine down on my main
computer, and i disabled a bunch of server type services (all ove4r IP,
nothing that should have been local) and found myself unable to right
click and subsequently unable to interact with any menus to re-enable
what i had disabled. I was forced to install over (as opposed to
reinstalling).

Additionally, some of what you've heard is correct - windows uses
authentication, plain and simple. win95/98/98se use your login and
password by default. if a password prompt pops up with user and pass, it
will use whatever you give it. if it pops up with only pass, it is using
guest. Apparently there are different and various authentication schemes
built in. with WinNT - it is more advanced, and you shouldn't have
problems between WinNT and W2k - they both have the full user pass
authentication in anything. a problem you may encounter is that you
connect to a machine on the network and are unable to get a prompt to
change the user you're authenticated as - that's because it's already been
established. if you get really angry you can pop up a console and type
"NET USE" and work from that to remove the login (net use /delete
computer i *believe* it is) - so you can re-authenticate yourself.

Windoze is pretty silly. yep.

Sincerely,
Martin Norland

P.S. - when ppl talk about Win2k - they generally mean 'Professional' -
otherwise they say server, advanced server, or just WinME - for those of
you confused, that's the "accepted" norm I've found in my travels.
