Lib 70 pathetic network speed

2001-01-05 Thread Wright, Chris

Subject: Lib 70 pathetic network speed

I have a lib 70 with a 3com megahertz 10/100 / 56k modem combo card. My
desktop machine and libretto happily talk to each other at 10mb/s network
speed via a crossover RJ45 cable (a little LED on the PCMCIA card shows me
the selected speed), but any file copies are painfully slow.
I tried to transfer a game that was 340 megs, and it took 93 minutes. Thats
equivelant to a miniscule 60k/sec transfer rate! I would be expecting more
like 1mb/sec.

My desktop works much faster when paired with another desktop. Any ideas ?

Chris.

Not yet. I'm hoping someone on the mailing list will come to my
rescue!
I suspect its a software configuration issue rather than a hardware
problemmaybe its because I'm running W95 OSR2 on one machine and W98 SE
on the other. I've got a mate with a laptop who I'll be seeing at the
weekend, so I'll get him to give my combo card a try. At least then I'll
know the hardware is working ok.

I got my card from The Computer Exchange, £85...not too bad for a
combo I thought.

Lib backlight

2001-01-22 Thread Wright, Chris

From: "Wright, Chris" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Lib backlight

How do you tell if your backlight needs replacing ? Obviously if you can't
see the display, this is a tell-tale sign, but if its your first libretto
then you have nothing to compare against.
I think mine might need replacing because the dark/bright panel settings in
power management seem to make very little difference, indicating that the
backlight is only producing enough illumination for the dark setting most of
the time.

How much for Tosh to fit a new backlight then ? (£UKP)

Ethernet card 10/100 speed select

From: "Wright, Chris" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Ethernet card 10/100 speed select

Is an RJ45 crossover cable insufficient to get 100mb/s speed ? I've noticed
that when I hook two desktops or desktop + libretto (both supporting
100mb/s) via an RJ45 crossover it always auto selects 10mb/s speed, and
there seems to be no way to change it.
Any ideas ?

This isn't really fixing the problem though is it ? You're just disabling
scandisk altogether rather than finding out what is causing a bad shutdown.
Still, if it works

Couple of things you could try :

Verify the hardware is actually working first by getting rid of
TCP/IP from both machines and see if you can get file/print sharing running
ok over IPX.
If you're using an RJ45 crossover cable, swap the ends round. For
some bizarre reason my libretto will only talk to my libretto with the cable
round one way.

then

In TCP/IP properties make sure the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 and
that no gateway is being used. Set up static IP addresses instead of
requesting dynamic ones from a server.

Interesting. Which network are you with ? Does the 7110 have a built
in modem so you just hook it up to your 110ct via serial cable ?

For the older libretti (50/70/100) Ebay may be your best option.

As far as I know you don't need any special drivers. Just the
appropriate SET BLASTER= statement in your autoexec.
