Which is fine if you are in the states, but in the UK it is still standard
price.

Yeah, I already own one. It's a very good solution if you have many friends
or associates with laptops (which, incidentally, I don't right now). It's
also a good as-needed field backup solution, especially for those with
subnotebooks (such as my L50 or my Picturebook). I wish they'd taken off
better in the market--I like the form factor a lot better than Zip media.

Someone else posted to the list saying they're coming out with a 100MB
version this year. That'd be nice (but I'm not buying one, now that I'm the
proud owner of one--and more to come--of the 40MB version.

Plus, they make great gifts at $20 apiece.

Thanks. I bought a few. Do you think they're:

  a) discontinuing them; or

Just not competitve vs. solid-state flash cards which are not as
magnetic
field dust sensitive, and the fact that nobody (today's laptop buyers)
use
them vs. the built-in CD-RW drives. After all, with most new 500+Mhz
notebooks
with CD-RW drives selling for only ~$1000, and CD-R discs going for $0.10
per
disc (if not free with rebates in Sunday paper ads), it makes no sense at
all
to use a Clik! disc for the majority, esp. when the discs aren't readable
in
other peoples machines without the adapter (whereas CD-R discs are).

However, for the single user wanting some portable storage to hold data
just
in case the HD goes, it's not a bad option considering how cheap they are
for
40MB, and that media is going for a decently cheap price on www.ebay.com.

   --

Otherwise, it's like this. Iomega sent me one for free. I stared at
the
pretty metal box and the contents in wonder for a few hours, played with
it in
laptop and PDA (doesn't work in Sharp Zaurus japanese PDA - too little
power to
spin it up), thought the transfer rates were so anciently slow ala a ZIP
drive
(we're talking slow like a floppy, not fast like a 16x+CD-RW drive; slower
than
a smartmedia flash card even!), and have the Zio! USB SmartMedia
pocketable,
flash card reader where I can plug in my 128MB card into any PC to
transfer
files, stared at the pretty metal box some more, then sold it on Ebay for
quite
a bit of money last year to buy something more useful, like a Lexar
compact
flash card with seperate PCMCIA adapter (the Lexar cards come with free
USB
adapters, but you'll need a seperate $10 PCMCIA adapter to PCMCIA slots
and
 laptops w/o USB).

Hi,

No idea a)||b),
I think, it is a good strategy to sell something easily.
PC card with media costs not much and after that you must buy an
adapter! Files in Clik will be shared with another computer(%90 it has
no PC card slot and adapter costs 5*more. Oo!).
Option : 3.5" PC Card Adapter can be used with any kind of PC Cards.

Eiren,

Iomega will be coming out with a 100mb version of the PocketZip (CLIK!)
disk in the fall in time for holiday sales, so perhaps that's why we are
seeing the extensive prices cuts on the current 40mb disks and accessories.

I don't understand what you mean about 3.5 PC Card Adapter?

The only adapter that would fit that description that I have seen is for smart media
cards to a 3.5 floppy. This won't work for
CF, pcmcia or anything else except I think there is a sony stick version too.

As far as desktop pcmcia slot costing 5x, you don't shop around enough. :-) The last
three I have bought cost me $25 each
from a vendor on Ebay. All brand new in the box dual slot pcmcia with 1 type II and 1
type III. The only drawback is that
they use an ISA slot but they work flawlessly in win9x/me. Couldn't get it to work in
win2k but NT's pcmcia support has
always been bad, hopefully it will be better in winXp.
