I think what he mentioned is just a USB adaptor that allow you to plug in
serial port device to USB bus. There is no other way around because (1)
serial port only support up to 115kbps of speed while USB needs 12mbps (2)
USB is a host based protocol (that means you need a processor behind it
directly to make it work), it is impossible via serial port.

Where did you find a serial to USB adapter.  It might be just the ticket for
those of us with Lib 50 & 70!!!

On a recent trip to japan, I was looking for such a beast, and they all
require cardbus support, which we don't have. Those look like normal type 2
cards, but have a brass or copper strip along the top edge of the connector,
4 or 5 mm wide, with little bumps on it. They are not supported. I did find
a serial port to usb adapter, that is just a little dongle, driven by a
software driver. It might work thru the docking station, I don't know. I
