Fine Neil, make a joke when others are sharing serious information!

Mike, that was real informative, My Dad used the terms 2 bits, 4... , etc.,
and I knew it stood for quarters of a dollar, but was unaware of the Spanish
origine. The only place I recall its' use in the everyday world is a high
school cheer. "Two bits, Fours bits, Six bits, a Dollar. All for (names of
school) stand up and holler."

Now back to broken screens and balky hard drives.

For the International Set, this is a three day weekend in the US. Memorial
Day, remembering the men and women that served our country in the military.
In general the first Summer holiday after school is out and a serious escape
for many families.

In Arizona the Weather Bureau has reserved the hottest day of the year so far
for this day, Expected to reach 113 degrees F.

My wife will tell you: don't ask unless you want to know!

According to what I remember from my teenage years as a numismatist: Several
hundred years ago, Spain began minting a coin with a value of eight
"reales." I'm not quite sure of what a reale is, but there you go. Such
coins, whether silver or gold, came to be called "pieces of eight." I
imagine you've probably heard of that in a pirate movie or similar. Since
the reale was actually a standard of value itself, and the eight-reale coin
was substantially more valuable than your average pirate/worker might carry
around in his coin bag, the practice of cutting the coins up into equal-size
pieces, each worth one reale, was born. Each eighth of a coin was referred
to as a "bit." Three-fourths of a coin would then be called "six bits",
one-half would be "four bits", and one-quarter would be "two bits." When the
US began to mint its twenty-five cent coin, it was worth one quarter of an
American dollar. Hence the term "two bits" began to be applied to the coin,
simply as a common substitute for "one quarter."

Interesting little piece of history, no?

Nah, it's just me not making sense (as usual!)
it's just that the value of the pound *today* seems to be around the value
of the threepenny bit I remember as a kid, in terms of what I can buy with
it.

So... the threepenny bits aren't a fixed fraction of a pound/quid?

I mean a quarter is always one fourth of a dollar but from your statement above I
might think that a dollar could be only worth 3 quarters which doesn't make sense.

Ah yes, well you have to remember the advantages of the LSD system:

apart from anything else, you can divide pounds by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12,
15, 16, 20, 24, 30, 40, 48, 60, 80, and 120...

in decimal, all you get is 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50. Not half as much fun.

Of course the best thing about decimalisation was that the new 2p coin was
the same size and weight as the old halfpenny but worth five times as
much...and vending machines couldn't tell the difference!

Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 13:51:42 PDT
From: "neil barnes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: H Re: Was Getting screened / Currency of the realm

Look, it all used to be very easy:

two farthings make a halfpenny (pronounced 'hape'ny')
two halfpennies make a penny
three pennies make a threepenny (thrup'ny) bit
a threepenny bit and a penny make a groat
two threepenny bits make a sixpenny bit, or a tanner
two tanners or three groats make a shilling, or bob
two shillings makes a two bob bit, or a florin
a florin and a tanner make half a crown (or half a dollar when I was a kid)
two half crowns make a crown
two crowns make a ten bob note
two ten bob notes make a quid
a quid and a shilling make a guinea

No problem at all...the new decimal system was so complicated it took two
years to implement (and we still haven't properly got the weights and
measures sorted out)

And yes, there were four dollars to the pound when I were but a lad...and
then that Harry Wilson went and devalued the pound...

Neil
(sadly remembering the days when you could take a young lady to the cinema,
visit the pub, and stop for fish and chips on the way home and *still* have
change for a ten bob note)

p.s. as the student will clearly see from the above, three and fourpence is
obviousely half of six and eightpence, which is what you get when you share
a quid among three kids! (which you can't do in decimal)
