OK. Pres, it is going to take some more sessions on the couch to get these things straighten out. I was amazed though that you were aware of the thread and spoke to it rather than dragging out the Hyde Park Soapbox. Jolly good. In fact if I do NOT have the battery in the Lib it will turn off during starting. As soon as the key is released it comes back on. My Lincoln is the same as is my LeSharo Motor Home. This is misleading. If your cigarette lighter truly goes dead during crank it is not wired the way the factory made it. Imports DO only make the cigarette lighter hot during run, which is annoying when I want to charge my phone. But every Ford/Lincoln/Mercury I have come across has the cigarete lighter socket hot all the time. If your Libretto, connected directly to the lighter without a battery shudder ) goes off during cranking it is indicitive of the voltage swinging wildly during crank. I promise I will try to step out of this thread at this point. Pres Waterman W2PW c/o Patchogue Motors, Inc. The jack end does NOT >short but the plug end when inserted could short the tip to ring, >depending on the design. The jack shell contacting the tip on insertion can have other problems. You momentarily connect + to the lib's ground. This is not a problem, as long as there are no other cables connected, and nothing connected to ground. If there ever is such a connection, then as you insert the plug, the tip will create a short, and the results... well. Anything from a spark to fire. Also, the tip may cause a short between the shell and tip contacts on the jack during insertion. All plugs are not created equal in this respect. In ham circles, the phono plug is NEVER used for power, for these reasons. Coaxial plugs are normal, and anderson powerpoles are widely accepted as a standard. See the OCRACES home page for the setup standard. All my 12V gear is now powerpoled, but the Lib isn't strictly a 12V device, so I haven't powerpoled it. >In fact if I do NOT have the battery in the Lib it will turn off during >starting. As soon as the key is released it comes back on. My Lincoln is >the same as is my LeSharo Motor Home. A tip from a former fireman. If you ever suspect fire in your motor home, BAIL OUT NOW.
