Subject: Re: speaking of wireless... Re: [LIB] ideal libretto

I'm using a NetGear ME 401 with a lib70, no power/heat problems. Supports
128 WEP. Same chipset as the linksys and dlink I think.

However I'd buy a card with a socket (or find a way to add one) next time
both
for playing with add on antennas and to avoid cooking my fingers while
using
the accupoint.

I looked in the manual where the FCC warning says 20cm away from the
antenna;
I guess this is is a cautious recommendation - but it's hard to hold a
lib70 right
handed and keep 5cm away.

regards
 Paul

yes.. reason i ask is cause like i said my dlink or ipaq cards never
 worked..

I had a cheap 802.11 CF card (for the IPaQ) and it only worked
with encryption turned off -- I returned it.

I now use LinkSys wireless cards for all my systems (IPaQ, the Sharp Zaurus)
and my Linux Lib 100. They might not be the cheapest cards available but they
all work
reliably with zero hassles.

BTW if you DO use this technology, turn on encryption and use the full 104
bits.
I set up a test wireless network with 40 bit encryption turned on and my Lib
100
was able to crack it by brute force in 14 seconds!

has anyone else managed to get a wireless card to work in the 50ct without

thats what happened to me, my old man brought 4 of the dlink cards and we
only managed to get one of them working in his vaio and even then it was
persistant to stop working every hour or so. we tried to get them working in
a vaio, travelmate, L110 and L50. then i had a chat to a mate and he offered
a package of 4 cards and 2 access points for about AUD$1200 where as the
dlink cards were AUD$300 each and the access points were about AUD$700 each.
thought it was a steal so got them and they worked and are still working
like a dream.. this was several months ago and havent had a problem with
them since.. except the overheating with the L50.

Well I know the L50 has a really finely set thermal shutdown threshold ...
before overclocking, it'd sometimes overheat just sitting on the desk
dumping a hard drive image on full power with nothing in the PCMCIA slots.
My L100 doesn't seem to trip the overheat sensor anywhere near as often
(although it does get a LOT hotter). You might want to try running Rain
2.0, Waterfall, CPUIDLE or any of the other CPU idling programs that have
been mentioned in the archives ... also try keeping the HDD turned off as
much as possible as that also generates a lot of heat. Also, I found that
when I'm not using the libby for a while (but still needed it turned on),
instead of lying it flat on the desk I'd open the screen to 90ยบ then sit it
on its left end ... that lets air flow past both the back and front sides
and helps with the overheating. I sometimes also flipped the keyboard up so
that the heat plate could get more airflow, that seemed to help a bit as
well especially when I needed to leave it going for a while (eg. compiling
a kernel or dumping a hard drive image). Of course, it gets interesting
trying to actually USE it in such a state ;-)

Hope this helps!

I remember somewhere I read that these wireless cards are designed to take
the lower 3.3v offered by CardBus slot. Maybe operates at 5V in L50 causes
those overheating. My Dlink wireless card on my L100 never really heats up
and consumes very little power for normal internet surfing.

Speaking of wireless cards in the libretto's, I had a Accton 11mbps
 Wireless
card(s/n ac-ew3101) in my 50ct and it seemed to overheat all the time.
is
this just because its not really designed for it or what?

Cardbus systems will accept standard 16 bit PC cards, but not the
 other
   way
around. There are mechanical differences in the connector housing
and
  the
pinouts are also different, so the controller chip has to be cardbus
   aware.

Not true in reality, Neil... that IS the company line though. Unless
I
  set
the sockets in Toshiba laptops to PCIC-Compatible ( NOT
 auto-selected )
  a
certain IBM wireless PC-card does not work. And even if I do set PCIC
my
Satellite Pro 4320 does not work with this card.

wifi cards.. doh.

reply to raymond, when the hard drives go on stand by and do their thing the
wireless card stops working so the only option is to take the card out and
put it in every time the hard drive goes on stand-by.. and that would get
iritating...
has anyone else managed to get a wireless card to work in the 50ct without
having overheating problems?
