[libvirt-users] issue with kvm host crashing

2012-09-11 Thread David M. Barlieb
I have a dell r910 with rhel6.2 on it and libvirt 0.8. This machine is hosting
12 virtual guests. Every 3 - 5 months the server crashes for no apparent
reason. The logs show no kernel panics or other issues causing the crash. The
sar logs show a very high context switch count ( approx. 17). and also high
runq-sz (approx. 10 - 18). The cpu's were mostly idle, memory usage low, no
swapping, disk io very low as well. This also occurs on a number of other
rhel6.2 servers I have using KVM/libvirt/qemu for virtualization. I am curious
if anyone else has reported incidents like this. After the crash the servers
all come backup, but as you can imagine, it is troubling to see this kind of
behavior, especially with these machines hosting production guests.

Any help or suggestions on what to look for would be helpful.

Hi All,

We need to down the guest and edit the xml file and make the change on this .
To save the change in xml configuration file need to give the command #virsh
definr

It will save permanetly ...start the guest ...

No way to change this on line

Hi David,
The current kvm doesn't support vCPU hotplug, which will be supported in the
future, so you can't change vCPU number for a running guest, it's a expected
result.

[libvirt-users] can't add cpu's to virtual guest

2012-03-04 Thread David M. Barlieb
I have a rhel6.0 server running kvm. I have recently needed to add additional
cpu's to some of the guests but cannot do it via virt-manager, can't doit using
virt, and can't do it by vi the guest.xml file. Is this a bug or am I missing

I had a similar issue on my rhel6.1 host, I had to enable virtualization
in the system bios.

Hi All,
I'm trying to install a VM on host OS (Redhat 6.1, KVM hypervisor).
I've installed all the required RPMs for KVM and libvirt tools.

Here is the list of libvirt RPMs and KVM modules

kvm-intel.ko

libvirt-java-devel-0.4.7-1.el6.noarch.rpm

qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.160.el6.x86_64.rpm

When I execute virt-install command I see the below error:

[root@nsn /]# virt-install

I've already cross checked the VMX setting in BIOS and it is enabled.
In VMX Feature MSR register , VT bit is set.

Following is some info about the platform:

has anyone encountered similar issues while using libvirt tools?
am I missing something w.r.t installation?

Appreciate your feedback.

[libvirt-users] management tools for kvm

2011-07-28 Thread David M. Barlieb
I have been installing kvm guests on a number of hosts and have been
managing them through a single virt manager on one of the hosts. I am
looking for a tool that will allow me to manage them from a windows
workstation, possibly using a web interface. Everything I've looked at
and read about seems to require a linux workstation to install on, like
oVirt or ConVirt. I am looking for a product that can run on a windows
workstation using either firefox or ie.

[libvirt-users] (no subject)

2011-02-01 Thread David M. Barlieb
Hello all, I am looking to use bonded interfaces as a bridge device for
my virtual hosts. My goal was to have 4 nics bonded together to create a
large pipe for my guests. I then tried to create a bridge device out of
it similar to creating a bridge out of a single nic. It unfortunately
did not work. Does any one know of a way to bond 2 or more nics than
configure the bond as a bridge to the virtual guests.

Thanks in advance,

Dave B

2010-11-16 Thread David M. Barlieb
HI, I've just begun using libvirt as part of my KVM installation and
have been having some confusion regarding networking of my virtual
guests. I'm not sure if I should even be sending this to this mailing
list and if not please let me know and if possible where I should be
sending this inquiry.

I understand I can setup a dedicated bridged interface for my guest. But
as for the virbr interface which is the default, I'm a little confused
about. When using this, does the guest os use the same ip as the host?
If so, then how to packets get to the guest instead of the host. I would
guess there's an alternate mac address for the guest interface and this
is how it gets there but am not certain. Sorry if this seems like a
simple question but I'm not very well versed in networking.
