Just French, or a (rough) translation preferred.

There are two kinds of comments:

- people that don't know LilyPond, and ask common questions like "is
there a GUI?", "can it really be used by non-programmers?" or "why a
  new notation language?";

- people that know LilyPond and answer the questions, making the
  eulogy of LilyPond.

The comments are quite positive. In particular, the first one, which
says approximatively: "The authors seem to be Don Knuth's heirs, by
judging their love of (musical) typography." (very approximative).

Tonight, I looked at lmodern (that's what apt-cache says when looking
for cm-super) and tried to hook in into LilyPond, replacing the ec*
fonts.

The lmodern fonts, in their current offering seem to be broken beyond
usage, for LilyPond

  * the AFMs contain an invalid global keyword: Generated

I implemented a workaround in Lily's AFM parser for this.

  * there are no TFMs that match the actual font filename and font
encoding, eg, for lmr10.pfa only `cork-lmr10.tfm' is shipped.

I don't think we can or want to kludge this kind of mapping into
LilyPond.

  * the AFMs claim to have FontEncoding FontSpecific, instead of
listing the actual encoding that can be mapped to a PostScript
encoding vector definition (.enc file).

I also don't think we can or want to kludge around this.

I filed three bug reports and reverted to using the ec* fonts again.
Quite possibly there is something that I missed?

There is one interesting thing that I found out, the lm.map file has a
very suggestive reencoding field, look:

gs bugs, or lilypond bugs

2004-04-13 Thread Michael Welsh Duggan
The latest CVS builds of LilyPond have been triggering what look like
bugs in gs. I have used both versions of gs in debian unstable
(gs-gpl and gs-afpl), and both of them end up bugging out, albeit in
different ways. This really seems like a bug in gs, but as it has
never happened before, I wonder what triggered these bugs. I have
partial ouput from both instances:

We're newbies in this area. We were puzzled as to why the ec fonts
were not in Debian. cm-super looks good, I'll look into that.

Thanks!

Congratulations on the job.

   * The `font-encoding' property can now be used to select
differently encoded fonts. The previous default setting
`TeX-text' has been replaced by latin1. LilyPond requires the

 properly.
Why reinvent the wheel? There are already several sets of

I recommend the cm-super fonts, /fonts/ps-type1/cm-super/.

I think it's great that you want to join; just look again to see what
