LilyPond Serif, LilyPond Sans Serif and Lilypond Monospace are aliases
those are defined by fonts/lilypond-fonts.conf.
fonts/lilpond-fonts.conf is LilyPond's own fontconfig configure file.
For example, LilyPond Serif is defined by this file like following:

```
LilyPond Serif
  Century Schoolbook L
  DejaVu Serif
  serif
```

The charactor that is contained in Century Schoolbook L:
The glyph of Century Schoolbook is used.

The charactor that is not contained in Century Schoolbook L,
but is contained in DejaVu Serif:
The glyph of DejaVu Serif is used.

Thanks a lot. What are the next steps we have to do? Where shall we
start? And is there a guide we should follow?

The questions below were asked on the lilypond-devel list.

Will the VM to be provided come complete with an installed OS? If
so, what is it, how will it be restarted, maintained, etc. If
not, presumably we will need to install an OS and maintain it.
Not trivial when this is a server open to the world, and needing
to be properly secured.

Me neither – I've never used a VM. I'll forward your questions to

I don't believe we've replied to this yet, and I for one don't
really understand what is being offered here. Will the VM to
be provided come complete with an installed OS? If so, what is
it, how will it be restarted, maintained, etc. If not, presumably
we will need to install an OS and maintain it. Not trivial when
this is a server open to the world, and needing to be properly
secured. Perhaps we should clarify this first, unless someone
already knows the answers.

LilyPond Serif/Sans Serif/Monospace Text Fonts?

2015-06-26 Thread Abraham Lee
Greetings, Dev Team!

I was just browsing through some of the latest code (in scm/font.scm) and I
noticed that the default text font names are now LilyPond Serif, LilyPond
Sans Serif, and LilyPond Monospace. Do such fonts actually exist or are
these just place holders? It looks like the fontconfig allows for a
fallback fonts anyway. It's not a big deal. I was just curious. Looks like
Masamichi Hosoda made these changes.

Sorry, my bad. Ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 15.04, my WLAN connection

Re: LilyDev Docker image?

Hello,

The bug list in not the appropriate list for this discussion I think, so
I am ccing Dev.

LilyDev was partly intended for those that don't have the time or skills
(or underlying operating system) to muck about with build environments
or where building LilyPond was tricky.

Virtual Box is a next/next/next click/click/click install and so is
pretty much installing LilyDev. My mother could do it.

If you're comfortable with 'containers' and understand (or think you
understand) why they are 'better' or 'more useful' than a VM in this
context then LilyDev probably isn't for you other than just a
convenience, and you could probably just create your own VM and install
all the dependencies you need as documented in the the Contributor's Guide.

I wouldn't have even bothered to begin to start development with
LilyPond had it not been for LilyDev in a VM (I had a mac, and had no
experience of things like building code).

I worry that sometimes we lose sight of the purpose of LilyDev. It isn't
supposed to be just be about making it easier for 'developers' (you
already probably know how to do this stuff yourself), it's for lesser
mortals like myself and those that don't have time to worry about if my
underlying OS will work or not.

Is it as easy to *set up* docker containers on a Windows or Mac Laptop
(for example) as it is to install VirtualBox and install an ISO file in
a VM today?

I would like to note that Lilypond has been packaged for GNU Guix, a
functional package manager. To create a lightweight development
environment in which all build dependencies are available one only needs
to run

guix environment lilypond

It obviously does not include the maintenance tools that come with
LilyDev (such as the extensions/wrappers around git), but I think it’s
very useful and doesn’t require an opaque solution like a Docker image.
