 Here's my final version.

Looks great, thanks!

 My Windows machine won't convert this to SVG. Would someone else
 like to and to upload the SVG?

Hmm.  I tried

  lilypond -dbackend=svg stockhausen.ly

and get the error

  warning: cannot find SVG font #f

Is this expected? If yes, can the error message be improved?

Hi,

this is another thing, but how about adding a nice standard notation
example to the wikipedia entry?
(like http://lilypond.org/ly-examples/bach-bwv610.png)

This Stockhausen is very impressive if you want to know that you can
tweak most everything to your needs. And it is now really close to the
original.
But to me the more convincing selling point is the good default layout
for traditional notation. And I would be a bit scared by this example
when searching for a notation program (as it is the only one in the
article).

My thoughts when I look at the Finale example:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/49/Prelude_3_2_Rach.png/500px-Prelude_3_2_Rach.png
“Ok. Not perfect but good looking.”

Lilypond:

The original uploader for the wikipedia image assumed it is fair use,

Which browser? Have you tried reloading the page? I've checked with
Chrome, and everything's OK; it displays the SVG natively on the
LilyPond page. However, Firefox 26 under GNU/Linux displays a
generated PNG image (does anybody know why? and can I change that?),
and for some reasons Wikipedia hasn't (yet?) regenerated the previews
from the most recent SVG version.[*]

On the other hand, the uncropped SVG image

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/4/4d/Klavierst%C3%BCcke_%28Stockhausen%29_Nr2-Klavierst%C3%BCck2-Anfang.svg

(cropping done with Inkscape) exhibits color mistakes in Firefox's SVG
handling. Sigh. I thought that displaying SVG images is mature
meanwhile.

BTW, how can I make Lilypond crop the SVG, similar to EPS output?

Fine here with Chromium (Debian wheezy, v31.something) and Iceweasel 23,
but the cropped image I made (see below) exhibits the blue
only-behaviour. Workaround also below.

BTW, how can I make Lilypond crop the SVG, similar to EPS output?

I only know the setting of the paper dimensions beforehand.

Looks like this should be put on the wishlist...

 (fully?) working version below
inkscape --verb=FitCanvasToDrawing --verb=FileSave --verb=FileClose file.svg

does the job, albeit not from LilyPond.

Also, IIRC not all browsers can deal with SVG fonts very well - maybe
you should convert to paths? That'd be

inkscape --verb=EditSelectAllInAllLayers --verb=ObjectToPath
--verb=FitCanvasToDrawing --verb=FileSave --verb=FileClose file.svg

at the expense of an increase of file size by ~30%.

 (fully?) working version here
This seems to be fine, but no clue why:

inkscape --verb=EditSelectAllInAllLayers --verb=ObjectToPath
--verb=FileSave --verb=FileClose file.svg

./svgclip.py -o cropped.svg file.svg

where svgclip.py is here: https://github.com/skagedal/svgclip
If text is not rendered to paths first, this moves the tuplet numbers
around, but with the Inkscape command first, it works.

BTW, I recognized that the SVG contains (local) links to the .ly file;
did you remember to disable pointAndClick?

Note that (at least for me) objects are blue exactly if they have a
textedit:///home/wl/stockhausen.ly hyperlink. Could you try to crop the
same file, compiled with \pointAndClickOff?
Inkscape seems to rewrite the entire document when changing the page
margins. I suspect that it removes colors for the a tags, Firefox makes
links blue per default, and the color for the noteheads has no priority
over that. (Which might be a bug. Or not.)

Excellent. This also solves the blue-notes issue in Firefox for me, even
after clipping in Inkscape. So, to summarize for reference:

1.) For cropping,
  inkscape --verb=FitCanvasToDrawing --verb=FileSave --verb=FileClose
file.svg
works, but has some caveats (probably for non-standard-conforming
viewers only, including Wikipedia's SVG-to-PNG-converter).

2.a) Firefox in some version(s) draws elements with links in blue if the
a tag does not specify another color.
2.b) Since Inkscape's FitCanvas rewrites the entire SVG and drops those
(seemingly superfluous) color attributes, you have to use a different
route with links: https://github.com/skagedal/svgclip
2.c) svgclip does not handle position of real text properly, hence you
have to convert to paths first.
  inkscape --verb=EditSelectAllInAllLayers --verb=ObjectToPath
--verb=FileSave --verb=FileClose file.svg

  ./svgclip.py -o cropped.svg file.svg
That's the only universal variant we have for SVGs with links.

3.) Even without links, real text causes funny positions with
Wikipedia's PNG thumb renderer [1]. Hence,
  inkscape --verb=EditSelectAllInAllLayers --verb=ObjectToPath
--verb=FitCanvasToDrawing --verb=FileSave --verb=FileClose file.svg
should be okay for SVGs with \pointAndClickOff, eliminating the need for
an additional tool.

Correct?

The pedal symbol clashes with the dynamic in bar 3 and there is a clash
of a tuplets in the second upper bar with accidentals - which I believe
is

Anyway, I have done as much as I can. Attached the before and
after files for anyone else who wants to finish this off.

The pedal / dynamic clash in bar 3 is pretty bad: is this a known bug?

Fairly certain the clash is caused by the crossing music. I'm working on an
improved version, closer to the version on youtube.

Is there any reason not to put the tuplet brackets on the upper staff in
bar 2 *below* the staff? It seems to me they would be clearer that way.

Thanks,

Carl

 If the version on YouTube is original (see attachment), then this has the
 tuplet markings over the staff.

 It's also got a modern time signature style. Anyone any idea how to do
 this?

 Latest version is attached. Needs dotted tuplet brackets, a bit of tidying
 of positioning, alternative time signature format, move of clef in LH of 2nd
 bar and I think it's done.

 Can anyone help with any of these?

 Dotted tuplet brackets and positions tweaked. Think this is good to go for
 now?
Looks good!

Here is a proposal for the positioning of the time signature:
\version 2.18.0

\relative c'' {
  \override Staff.TimeSignature #'font-size = #20
  \override Staff.TimeSignature #'extra-offset = #'(0 . -20)
  \numericTimeSignature
  c
}

 Here is a proposal for the positioning of the time signature:
 \version 2.18.0

 \relative c'' {
   \override Staff.TimeSignature #'font-size = #20
   \override Staff.TimeSignature #'extra-offset = #'(0 . -20)
   \numericTimeSignature
   c
 }

Let's not use hard-coded offsets please, they are unlilypondish and
will break at first opportunity. Rather, use a Dynamics context with
Time sig engraver like this:

meter =
\new Dynamics \with {
  \consists Time_signature_engraver
} {
  \override Dynamics.TimeSignature #'font-size = #6
  \time 2/8
  s4
  \time 3/8
  s4.*2
  \time 4/8
}

(and remove Time sig engraver from regular staves)

best,
J

According to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE2cMxY91rU a couple of dynamics
are still missing:
-) in LH 1st bar there should be one \f above and one below the staff
-) in LH 2nd bar there should be a \mf under the e#
