Re: etf2ly

2006-01-24 Thread D Josiah Boothby

Or should I just re-notate the whole thing?

I know that this is just a way for me to admit to being a bit of a
masochist, but I generally find it easier (and just as time consuming) to
start over. I've tried using the lily code that Rosegarden, NoteEdit, and
Denemo produce, but I spend so much time correcting code -- sometimes only
so that it looks a particular way that makes it easier for me to read,
sometimes because I don't like the way the programs organize everything --
that I usually give up and start typing from scratch.

In my experience, things only get more complicated when dealing with a
translator. I have not had good experiences with trying to turn midi files
into lily source, though it's been long enough that the tools that perform
that function are probably more mature. Granted, my experience is limited.
I'm too lazy: I'd rather just type out a new score than deal with mucking
out the old.

I don't know. The way I've answered your question sounds suspiciously like
the host of editor questions that have been filling up the list lately. I
suppose the best cure for this may be following the advice Mats gave me
for something totally unrelated about a year or so ago: Try it. Doing it
Josiah's way is probably not the best way to do it.

One alternative is to switch to 2.7.28 and use the new MusicXML import (which
of course only works if your ETF-compatible software supports XML export).

The MusicXML import is generally better supported than ETF in the 2.7 series.

If you still want to use 2.6 for its stability, then you can use only the XML
import from 2.7, and switch to 2.6 for post-editing/typesetting the score;
the file format should be more-or-less backward compatible.

I would generally agree, as the output of most translators is correct
but barely readable. On the other hand, I hope we'll manage to get the
MusicXML filter to be good
enough to be able to use Finale as a front-end, and Lilypond as a
back-end. If we - I mean, Han-Wen- don't, the output can still be
improved up to a point where
it might be ok to maintain it as is: bar numbers in comments, relative
mode rather than absolute mode, line breaks on every bar, meaningful
names  whenever possible...

You could have a look at xml2ly: it has already a very readable output
and supports a lot of useful MusicXML features (most outstanding lack is
lyrics, at present). You should find a copy in the recent archives of
this list - or feel free to ask for it to me directly. I've never tested
it on Windows, but should be fairly trivial to have it working.

Re: score

2006-01-24 Thread Mats Bengtsson

Quoting Paul Scott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

With printallheaders=##t, you can use the ordinary title or
subtitle fields, otherwise you can redefine how the titles for
each subsequent score is printed, for example by

\paper {
 bookTitleMarkup = \markup {
  \fill-line {
\fromproperty #'header:piece
   }
 }
}

which should center the "piece" field if I'm not mistaken.

It may take me a little while to test that and I'm not sure how to
use it yet. Will that allow me to have different movement names
since \paper applies to the whole ly file?

Just add these lines at the top of your file. It redefines how all the
titles are typeset. Here comes one complete example, which also
corrects a copy/paste error in the lines I wrote above.

\paper {
 scoreTitleMarkup = \markup {
  \fill-line {
\fromproperty #'header:piece
   }
 }
}

\score{
 \relative c'{c d e f}
 \header{piece = "Movement 1" }
}

\score{
 \relative c''{c d e f}
 \header{piece = "Movement 2" }
}

\score{
 \relative c'{c d e f}
 \header{piece = "Movement 3" }
}

Don't worry too much about that the field is called "piece", it
could just as well have been called "movement" or something else.

a empty "piece" field make the same space as a empty \markup here on my

Using RPM to install 2.7 ?

2006-01-24 Thread Graham King
I'd like to install lilypond 2.7 on a Fedora Core 4 box, on which all
the software is (so far!) managed by RPM. Has anyone created an RPM
package of 2.7?

Earlier, I tried to make a naive binary RPM using the installer script
from
http://lilypond.org/download/binaries/linux-x86/lilypond-2.7.28-1.linux.sh but
this appears to drag in an extra copy of files from ghostscript-8.15, guile,
python, freetype, pango, etc., all of which are already installed.

Then, thinking I'd better do the job properly and build from source, I
looked at the version 2.4 spec file from
http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/mirror/all/linux/SRPMS/lilypond-2.4.5-1.src.rpm
 and took fright! Definitely time to ask the experts...

\markup{\right-align { \line{temple 3} \line{2} \line{blocks}}

I thought so, but while \center-align behaves correctly (3 lines), the

What am I missing?

If you're using linux, freebsd, or osx, try this command:
ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=11x17 file.ps

I can't remember what the issue(s) were, but that's what I wrote last

In case you're interested, here's the whole command that makes a

psbook $1.ps | psnup -2 -ptabloid -Pletter | ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=11x17 -
