D'oh! How did I miss that? Thanks for the help! :-)

However, with the staff lines on the ossia running well away from the
bar line (no doubt due to the text markup in the measure at the
beginning of the volta of the melody staff), I'm wondering if \stopStaff
and \startStaff is the right approach here since it doesn't seem to
handle boundary cases very well. I'm more than willing to code up a
workaround if a kind developer could point me in the right direction.

First, I think you are doing a wonderful job with the manual since it is so big and complete.I
am wondering, seeing all the simple "howto" questions you answer giving
a link in the documentation, if I would not be useful to simply gather
on a page all those "howto" questions and the related links when the
answer actually *is* in the documentation. This could provide a way to
quickly find information for common questions about topics which are
clearly covered but not easy to spot in the documentation (which
sometimes is the case :)

midi2ly

2006-07-04 Thread Philip
I'm have become familiar with the basics of this software, and am exploring some
more advanced features. One particular interest to me was converting MIDI files
to .LY format.

I'm running the latest vershon of LilyPond on Mac OS X v. 10.4.7 on an Intel
processor. I am also a Linux dabbler, so it was no big problem for me to
discover that midi2ly uses the terminal. However, when I tried to run the
software, I was told that the command "midi2ly" was not found. Is there
something I'm overlooking? I will admit that, while I'm modestly familiar with
BASH, I haven't used it in OS X much. Could that be the issue?

Thanks for your help. LilyPond seems to be a very good piece of software.

Lilypond store?

2006-07-04 Thread Stewart Holmes

Okay... this may seem like a strange place for
this, but it's seem the best place to put it in order to get
attention/opinions.

What I'm proposing is some kind of a collaboration
between Lilypond users to submit their scores to an online score (the scores
being engraved from public domain sources, etc.). The money that is made from
the sale of scores (either pdf/ly/both files) could then be distributed in 3
ways:

1) The upkeep of running the store
2) The creator of the score
3) The community

Number 3: A chunk of the money would go into a
piggy bank of sorts, which would be used to, upon application, help fund
sponsorship of Lilypond features.

That's me out... now let the shooting down commence
(hopefully not).

oh really? I will check into that.

If not BAT scripts, then perhaps WSH or VBScript will do the trick more
nicely..I'll look into it eventually, for now I'm just typing the whole path
name. I imagine the main problem with the BAT approach is coming up with a
truly generic solution. Making one-off BAT scripts or even just using a
windows shortcut can solve the problem for someone on a one by one
basis..but admittedely, kind of a pain. When I get some time I'll try to
figure out a generic solution and if/when I do I'll make sure to pass it on
to the crew for possible inclusion in the CVS. There is a lot more that I
need to learn about both Python and Lilypond before I can consider more at
this time.

Trent,

When I first installed 2.9.9 I had this problem a lot too. I found that if
I ran the script as follows from the windows command line:

That it worked fine. The trick was using the full path name of the python
script. Don't ask me why. I'm sure this must be an environment issue and
I'm willing to bet that setting something in the ENV will fix this issue,
perhaps an addition to PATH or some python related env variable. I honestly
don't know.

I haven't tried any 2.9.x version on Windows yet, but it seems
very strange that this trick should solve any problems, since
the LilyPond installer puts the LilyPond bin\ directory first in the
PATH environment variable, which would imply that your command
runs the python.exe version that's included in the LilyPond
package, just as would be done if you ran the musicxml2ly
commend directly. (However, I know that the hackers have
been fiddling around with how a script knows where it's
located, so there may very well be a difference between
versions 2.8 and 2.9 and between different 2.9.x versions).

But using the full path of the py script seemed to solve that
issue. I also had to run it from the lilypond dir...I didn?t try anywhere
else yet.

Then, why do you say you "had to"? Sorry to sound sarcastic,
but this sound like complete nonsense to me!

I really think that trying all the different versions of lilypond
is not the answer for you. It?s a windows env thing. Unfortunately, it
seems the windows version of Lilypond is really just a minimal port..the
software seems to work, but some installation issues and env issues such as
this are, I believe, fixable under windows, but will require some sleuthing.
It would definitely be nice if the windows lilyond installer took care of it

already.

I know that the main hackers would be more than happy if
anybody with Windows competence could assist them with
these issues.

When you include an example of your .ly code, please always
make sure that you include a full example that anyone else

exactly how you used your variables \regrainmelody and
\versonemelody, not to mention that it takes time.

First of all, you cannot have two different \mark directives
on the same bar line, so you would probably need a
\markup{...} to produce the two lines of marks with a
single \mark directive. This combined markup would then
have to be aligned to the bar line in some way.

Re: Problem Adding Lyrics to Poly

2006-07-04 Thread Mats Bengtsson

What is the problem? I just tried your file with the latest
stable version, 2.8.5, and it seems to print the lyrics.
I hope you know that versions 2.9.x are development versions
that typically have more bugs than the stable versions 2.8.x.
So, for any serious typesetting, I strongly suggest to stick to the
stable version.

The font handling has changed completely in version 2.6 and
newer, so you now have to specify fonts by their name as they
are known to Pango/FontConfig, not by the name of the font
file. The point I tried to make in one of my earlier emails was
that it seems that Pango/FontConfig doesn't recognize any
fonts from MikTeX, for example (in Windows) and even though
the question has popped up a number of times on the mailing
list, nobody has provided any solution. So, don't spend
too much time on figuring out exactly what TeX font you want,
unless you know how to configure Pango/FontConfig to access
it.

Use the link provided earlier to get the corresponding type1 fonts.

Just as most other people on the list, I don't have access to
an installation of LilyPond 2.4 anymore and I have forgot many
of the details. However, I remember that Han-Wen had made
his own Type1 version of the ecrm fonts (available in the
ec-fonts-mftraced package). The mapping from font properties
to the name of the font file was done in the file scm/font.scm.

What, like this?

If you're complaining about scattered docs, I generally suggest looking
at the latest ones, since I don't update the docs for 2.6 any more.

But having used this index in an effort to learn the Lily code I have found in

every case there is not enough information there to get the job actually done.
For example the very first thing (actually 2nd) is scheme tutorial..

For the purpose of this discussion, I'm only talking about the latest

- scheme tutorial is tucked away in appendix B.

But in all honesty it's almost all Greek to me, particularly when the first

- main docs, 10.2.1 creating titles.

To be frank the documentation just isn't simple enough. There is far too much

That's why we have a tutorial. Do you have any suggestions as to how to

I would think that you would start out with a single melody, then go to a duet

Whatever the case, documentation for getting started needs to be based on very

Lily Documentation

2006-07-04 Thread joelinux
I'm sorry, but I accidentally deleted the original message where you asked for
suggestions
for improving documentation. My feeling is that the documentation is very jumpy
and scattered on any given topic. For example I have been using the index, or
at
least this index:

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.8/Documentation/user/lilypond/LilyPond-index.html#LilyPond-index

Which I now see is for 2.8 even though I was running 2.6. So just off the bat,
maybe there should be a pointer (link) to the various versions of the
documentation.
Because it's only now that I 1st realize the documentation wasn't actually
intended
for me.

But having used this index in an effort to learn the Lily code I have found in
almost
every case there is not enough information there to get the job actually done.
For example the very first thing (actually 2nd) is scheme tutorial..

But in all honesty it's almost all Greek to me, particularly when the first
think
I might want to do is put the title on a piece. So If I were to write
documentation,
I would Start with something like. "How to notate a Lead sheet in Lilycode"

Here is a basic template for for a Lilycode Lead Sheet:

1. The title is included or placed into the header along with the key of the
piece and the time signature:

Titles are Enclosed in Quotes for example: \title = "This is the Title"

But what you have is:

\paper {
  line-width = 9.0\cm
  paper-height = 10.0\cm
}

\book {
  \header {
dedication = "dedicated to me"
title = \markup \center-align { "Title first line" "Title
second line,
longer" }

and a whole lot more.

To be frank the documentation just isn't simple enough. There is far too much
stuff
to wade through to just enter the name of a piece, and more over as a computer
program,
Lilypond isn't exactly expeditious.

I think the documentation needs to be tied to templates which can just be filled
in and the templates need to be full of comments which explain the use of the
code.

Really Lilypond needs a complete Guide book on how to go about building a
composition,
because I can assure you that almost every little step turns out to be pure hell
as it takes hours and hours to learn or do the simplest thing.

I would think that you would start out with a single melody, then go to a duet
or
simple piano piece, and finally an orchestral score. Figured bass would be a
separate
categories

That's why I think Lilypond needs to in some way be combined with Open Office so
that most textual notations are just put in with a word processor over the top
of
the musical staves.

Whatever the case, documentation for getting started needs to be based on very
useful
simplistic, but complete templates that have most of the elements of standard
music
composition and notation. I'm not really interested in how to deal with 7/10
time
or multiple colored instrumental lines on a single staff. I would rather just
like to get 4/4 time when I specify it. Just (Keep It Simple Stupid.)

Re: Suggested Example

2006-07-04 Thread joelinux
I suggest an example of "Three Blind Mice" with Style / Tempo indication in the
the header, a /box "Intro" of muliple bar rests, then a repeated /box "A "
section which moves to a \box "B " sectionwith a 1st , 2nd & 3rd Ending where
the 1st and 2nd ending are actually the same, and the 3rd ending is different.
Tthen a a final melodic variation of /box "A" that is now labled /box "C" .
This final section should jump (del a Segno) back to the /box "A" section which
then jumps to a final indented "Coda".

The example should contain highly altered b5 or #5 b7 #9 or b9 chords
including poly tonal chords shush as Emaj over Bb7 along with hip lyrics line
to the notated melody such as "Aunt Lily cooks musical rats with a lot of fuss
and muss." " But Kieren carves the real meat of a Lily Stew - so simple you
see" "This is no jive, just an example tor all the Lilly wanta be."

Kind-of. I made a few remarks at the beginning of chapter 15, but they
should also be at the beginning of chapter 13.

Some details:
- Incorrectly changed a ">" to "}" in scheme code
- The command-line has changed from
   ("lilypond" "/cygdrive/C/ . . . /file.ly")
to
   ("C:\\lilypond\\usr\\bin\\lilypond-windows.exe" "file.ly")
so must be analyzed differently to extract the file name.
Difficult to convert, but ought to be flagged or documented.
- The string 'strftime "%T"' must be changed to 'strftime "%H:%M:%S"'. The
shortcut doesn't work in 2.8.5. LilyBug?

Automatically updating scheme code is difficult, and I don't think it's
worth adding details of individual cases to the docs. I've added a
warning about scheme code in general, though.

- \line isn't inserted where required. Documented. A biggie.

Could you let me know if there's anything that should be added to the
list in 13.3 Updating with convert-ly ? (other than scheme code)

Cheers,
- Graham

I don't know how postscript works, but try creating this in a separate

do all your tweaks in a file; start off with

mysymbol = \markup { \postscript #"blah blah"}

play with this small example until you have the tweak working, and then
add it to your real file.

2.8 pdf is 272 KB vs. 69 KB for 2.4

2.8 turns point-and-click on by default. In 2.4 PnC information

This line does nothing.

You are very inventive when it comes to working around certain issues by
using \markup and extra spacing tweaks, but in most cases I think that
lilypond has more elegant solutions.

Have you read chapters 3 to 5 in the new docs? I highly recommend that
you read those chapters from the 2.9 docs -- don't worry, at the moment
(lilypond 2.9.10) those chapters apply to 2.8 just as much as 2.9.

Once you've read those, try modifying one of your scores (don't deal
with all three versions at the same time) with those tips in mind. Then
send it to me again, and I'll make any additional comments.

Cheers,

Re: Coloring of note heads of multiple voices in the same staff

2006-07-04 Thread Kieren MacMillan

Hi, Markus:

Is there a possibility to maintain the different colors also in the
merged staff?

Not the way you'd like it... =(

If the merged staff is coded as

  \new Staff << \trpmusic \\ \tbmusic \\ \altomusic >>

you'll get three separate (but correctly coloured!) Voices, rather
than the combined single-Voice output you desire.

Sending the voices to different voice context will keep the
coloring but

also generates new staff lines what I don't want.

See above code.

Best regards,
Kieren.

Look at \set in the index! This will direct you to 9.2.3. The VERY
FIRST EXAMPLE of \set involves changing a property at the Score level!

Of course, for expand-limit you probably want \override instead.

On a more general level, the use of \override seems quite common. It
would be nice to be able to change the defaults - there are various
places where lilypond and I disagree as to what is "normal". I don't
remember seeing anything about it in the manual,

4.6 Style sheets ?!
9.2.6 Changing context default settings ?!?!

Anthony, please read the manual. I've spent literally over *100 HOURS*
writing and updating manual since April. When people complain about the
lack of info in the docs, when that info is clearly *IN* the docs -- in
some cases, when that info has been in the docs for years -- I really
wonder why I bother.

I mean, if I stopped working on lilypond and worked at McDonalds serving
fries, I would have made over $800 in that time. That would cover two
months of rent.

Coloring of note heads of multiple voices in the same staff

2006-07-04 Thread Markus Schneider
Hello list,

I tried an approach to have different colored note heads to keep track of a
brass section.
The score consists of three voices (trumpet in Bb, alto sax in Eb and
trombone in C) and a merged staff (all voices in C).

Is there a possibility to maintain the different colors also in the merged
staff?

Sending the voices to different voice context will keep the coloring but
also generates new staff lines what I don't want.

Thanks for your help!
Markus

P.S. Attatchment created with Lilypond 2.8.4 on W2K.
I tried also 2.9.10 but the result was the same.

MultiMeasureRest - trying to be clever ...

2006-07-04 Thread Anthony Youngman
I want to change the default value of expand-limit rather than override
it within my "voice" part that I put all the notes in. I could put it
there without much difficulty but the way I lay my parts out it feels
wrong for it to go there.

Is there any way I can change its value within the Score or Staff
context, and have it take effect at Voice level? I did try

\set MultiMeasureRest.expand-limit = 1

which seems logical, but it blows up because the parser thinks the "-"
is a minus sign not a hyphen (or something like that). Should I possibly
have #' or something in there?

On a more general level, the use of \override seems quite common. It
would be nice to be able to change the defaults - there are various
places where lilypond and I disagree as to what is "normal". I don't
remember seeing anything about it in the manual, if someone will tell me
how to do it I can write up a paragraph or two to document it.

Cheers,
Wol

figured bass : font size

2006-07-04 Thread Jean-marc LEGRAND

Hi list !

Using Xp with Lilypond 2.8.3

And here I go again with the figured bass stuff ! Actually, I think lily can
be perfect with this,
so I'de like to know how to use it properly...

I have got this output :
(Embedded image moved to file: pic22795.jpg)

you can see that if the figures have the right size, the sharp and flats are
much to little.

My .ly file is :

\version "2.8.3"
theorbefigures = \new FiguredBass
\figuremode {
\override FiguredBass.BassFigure #'font-size = # -2
<6 _->16 s <_->8  <5 4> <_+> <_+>2
}
theorbe = \new Voice {
\clef bass
\relative c {
g4 d a'2
}}
\score {
\new StaffGroup <<
\theorbefigures
\new Staff <<\set Staff.midiInstrument = "cello" \theorbe >>
>>
\layout { }
 }

I have reduced the font size with \override FiguredBass.BassFigure #'font-size
= # -2 , but I just
wanted to reduce the figures. I think there's a problem of relative size of the
feta font compared
to the classical font.

My question is : do the figures belong to the same font as the sharps and flats
? And if not, how
can I adjust the size of each font separatly ?

Best regards !

Is this possible in Lilypond?

I think the easiest way is to use the string "½". (ok, I know, it's
