time (it seems more compact, readable, and aesthetically appealing, to me).

New LilyPond-based Notation Software (Was: Midi2ly problem solved...)

Including an expert in python on the team, we were unable to make the #¤%! thing work. For 1 whole month. Your article on Gmane solved the problem. Well, I'm glad it could help... Next problem is that LilyPond cannot read the converted *.ly file. One problem at a time. The truth is, midi2ly doesn't work very well. For instance, it doesn't handle -yet- bar checking or pitch checking, so sometimes, LilyPond tends to get confused with large many MIDI scores. So maybe you'd better reconsider your "Convert MIDI to an editable score" feature thing... or, still, you can help debugging the midi2ly script (which would be much appreciated by the whole LilyPond community, and would definitely convince many LilyPond users to give your soft a try...) It will be freeware all over, including the music teaching books. Think we have come up with quite a few easy and workable solutions to the many difficult explanations in the original manuals. Except for the midi2ly.py, that is :-(. This the point I'm not getting. As far as I can see, you don't make any difference between "free speech and "free beer" here. How comes you managed to mix up GPL software (LilyPond) with free non-OSS TedNotepad and commercial software (NoteWorthy)? How can your new A-play licensing guarantee any long-term freedom for the users (particularly, what if you can't support the software anymore, or can't support it without any fee?) One more question: will your software be cross-platform? LilyPond is totally Unix/Mac/Win32 compatible, and so are most of its helpful editors (to begin with jEdit and Bert Fodor's wonderful LilyPondTool plugin). I won't be able to give A-play a look (or a try) if it isn't able to run on my computer, of course. Once again, I'm afraid the pieces of software you implemented have made it less freely useable. midi output dynamics, instrument tone
basics - windows xp machine, Lilypond v2.6.5 I've been experimenting with getting midi outputs for my songs to help my band members (who really don't read music) get the idea. I've been able to combine the vocal melody with a detailed accompaniment part. I would like to have a little differentiation between the parts to make it easier to hear the parts. Two ideas come up - change the overall dynamics of the parts relative to each other, or change the tone of one part. I looked in the manual for v2.6 and saw the set Staff.midiInstrument command. I tried to put it in my score block and in the variable for my melody part and all the Midi output still sounds like a grand piano no matter what instruments I choose. Maybe the problem is I'm just listening to the midi file using Windows Media Player? The dynamics thing is even more confusing to me - all I'd like to do is tell the midi output to play the melody at full volume and the accompaniment part at some fraction. I don't care to have any dynamics on my printed output. Seems like a simple thing in concept, but frankly I seem lost trying to figure any thing about dynamics. Could someone please explain the erroneous output I get in this short example.
I've attached the PDF in case your LilyPond does something different. I posted
it to bug-lilypond on Thursday, but no-one has responded there, so I guess
it may be something to do with my code.

This is not simple, but it will give you underlined markup:
foo = \markup { \combine "abc" "___" }
(In between the 2nd set of quote signs are three underline characters.)
You may have some trouble getting the exact spacing you would like before
and after underlined text.
