I was rather talking about a movement in the Trio for Violin,
Klarinet, and Piano (`Contrasts') which contains a chain of five time
signatures (IIRC) to indicate a complicated Hungarian folk music
rhythm pattern.

it's funny, i tried what you suggest and the file opens, but some

randomly moved.

if i open a ps file generated by ghostscript directly from the LP

BTW, i haven't been able to open pdf's with scribus, i get some "not

i'll keep on trying with inkscape, i'm obviously having some

anyone lucky using inkscape with files generated by LP?

That's nifty.

Would it be worth a page somewhere in manual just on uses of \tweak?
Notehead properties within a chord are the obvious example. Formatting
nested tuplet brackets that begin at the same moment is another really good
use of \tweak. And now the tie control points.

Maybe the different \tweaks should appear in the relevant sections of the
manual concerning the object of the tweak -- in chords, tuplets, ties, etc.
But it just seems like a small page on the uses of \tweak could be
structurally enlightening.

The link should go to the Vaticana_ligature_engraver; the
Gregorian_ligature_engraver is its parent class, and as such has no

Update: Instead of forcibly overriding the notehead, there a much better way:
The docs say that there are prefixes \linea and \cavum, but my first attempts
didn't show any effect...

The source code shows that these glyphs are only used in the ligature
engraver, so the command to use linea and cavum needs to be inside a
ligature!
The following works just fine:

\new VaticanaVoice {
  \[ \linea \cavum g \]
  \[ \linea g\]
}

While I don't actually know how to set those noteheads, at least the font has
these glyphs:
- -) noteheads.svaticana.linea.punctum
- -) noteheads.svaticana.linea.punctum.cavum

So, whoever implemented gregorian chant in lilypond definitely thought of such
vertically barred noteheads...

A little grepping the source code shows that lilypond really is able to use
these glyphs.

And then the LSR gem comes in: http://lsr.dsi.unimi.it/LSR/Item?id=86
It gives the hint that one can override the note head easily. It does not
correctly use them (for 2.11), though:
\override NoteHead  #'style = #'vaticana.linea-punctum

A little playing around (and knowing the glyph name) indicates that it should
be #'vaticana.linea.punctum. The attached file shows you how to do this.

Ok, I reply to myself.
I was hesitant to use the "extra-offset" command because I though that it

a sample code for those who would be interested :

header and page numbers

2008-07-29 Thread David Bobroff
I posted a question about putting the title rather than the instrument
as a running header as well as asking about placing page numbers bottom
center. I found a piece of LilyPond code in the docs that would place
the page numbers at the bottom center:

From 4.1.2 Page formatting

\paper {
  print-page-number = ##t
  print-first-page-number = ##t
  oddHeaderMarkup = \markup \fill-line { " " }
  evenHeaderMarkup = \markup \fill-line { " " }
  oddFooterMarkup = \markup { \fill-line {
 \bold \fontsize #3 \on-the-fly #print-page-number-check-first
 \fromproperty #'page:page-number-string } }
  evenFooterMarkup = \markup { \fill-line {
 \bold \fontsize #3 \on-the-fly #print-page-number-check-first
 \fromproperty #'page:page-number-string } }
}

This certainly puts page numbers bottom center but then the copyright
notice disappears. What do I need to do to the above code to get rid of
 the page number on page 1 (print-first-page-number = ##f will do that
but the copyright notice is also not displayed) and print the copyright
notice?

As for getting the title instead of the instrument as a running header
after page one I tried editing titling-init.ly to change:

oddHeaderMarkup = \markup
\fill-line {
  %% force the header to take some space, otherwise the
  %% page layout becomes a complete mess.
  " "
  \on-the-fly #not-first-page \fromproperty #'header:instrument
  \on-the-fly #print-page-number-check-first \fromproperty
#'page:page-number-string

}

evenHeaderMarkup = \markup
\fill-line {
  \on-the-fly #print-page-number-check-first \fromproperty
#'page:page-number-string

  \on-the-fly #not-first-page \fromproperty #'header:instrument
  " "
}

...by changing #'header:instrument to #'header:title

It didn't work. The odd/even HeaderMarkup simply disappeared.

Help?

David

Analysis brackets for lyrics

2008-07-29 Thread Matthieu Jacquot

Hi all,
I try to use analysis brackets in a lyrics context, the problem seems more
global : how to call a function in a lyrics context? In the code below the
second staff is when bracket is linked to notes, it would be fine if it was
below the lyrics text. Can anybody help me? Thanks in advance.
Matth
So here's the code :

\version "2.11.*"
<< \new Voice { c'4 c' c' c'}
\new Lyrics \with {\consists "Horizontal_bracket_engraver"}
\lyricmode
{"a" \startGroup "a" "a" "a" \stopGroup }
 >>

<< \new Voice\with {\consists "Horizontal_bracket_engraver"} { c'4
\startGroup c' c' c'\stopGroup }
\new Lyrics \lyricmode
{"a" "a" "a" "a"}

Re: WikiLily - a lilipond wiki

2008-07-29 Thread Mike Blackstock

Oh yeah, for sure, let's role the 2 sites into one somehow.

I have complete control over the wikilily.org server (it's in my office)
so I can
add wiki extensions and stuff without delay; my job gives me most of the
day to work

on my own music stuff.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed. Right now, I'm setting up a
section for guitar
chamber music [the .ly sources for the stuff at
http://www.blackstock.ca/egroupware/sitemgr/sitemgr-site/?page_name=flute]
and the file structure suggestions at
http://www.classicalcode.com/wiki/index.php/Path_and_File_Name
is a good model. Other suggested models are the Choral Public Domain
Library (www.cpdl.org) and the

International Music Scores Library Project at www.imslp.org

Cheers,
Mike

How to add double barlines to a gregorian chant?

2008-07-29 Thread Dominic Neumann
Okay, then it breaks already after the fourth note ... this doesn´t help much.
Now I added some more \noBreak commands after other notes and now it
fits into one line.
That´s not what I would call a "clean solution" ... :-/

I gave up on the jEdit +LilypondTool as I have an OSX 10.3.9, and
ploughing through all the posts on here, it doesn't really seem to
work at all, & I just don't have time to spend on finding the bug
there... It also seems more important for those with a newer Mac
version who basically need to have jEdit/LilypondTool as an interface
to Lilypond.

I downloaded Smultron instead ; it looks a lot simpler and much less
complicated. It basically has the added bonus of numbered lines and
some coloration, but not much else (it seems), which does help save
time a little.

I've also read that there's something called Lilypond Mode in emacs,
but again, I was at a total loss in knowing how to install that
properly.

Support for Gregorian Chant is not great in Lilypond, unfortunately,
but you can use it for simple things.

For bar lines, you want to use the special commands that are set up by
gregorian-init.ly. Specifically, the double bar line is \finalis.
See section 7.7.9 (Divisiones) for the whole list. I think you will
still need to use \bar "" to indicate places where the line can be
split.

Lilypond-book page appearance

2008-07-29 Thread Hugo Ribeiro

Dear all,

as I mentioned in a previous email, I am editing a translation to
portuguese of Kent Kennan's "Counterpoint Based on the Eighteenth
Century" textbook. The Chapter 12 is already done, but the final
appearance of the page is not ok. The distance between systems are fine,
but the problem is the gap between the end of the score and the text,
because I think that LaTex tends to centralize all the objects. The
final output is in this adress:

http://www.hugoribeiro.com.br/kennan/kennan_cap12.pdf

And the source of the chapter, the examples and the makefile (in
portuguese 'fazer') are compacted in this address:

http://www.hugoribeiro.com.br/kennan/contraponto_livro-kennan.zip

I ask for some help to make this example looks better.

All the best,

Hugo Ribeiro

I was referring to the fact that the "\partial 4*3" in the alternative bar
is necessary to keep LilyPond's timekeeping happy. Now that I read this
section again, I see that this is mentioned as a known issue. It might still
be worth making clear that you have an example demonstrating the known issue
and its solution.

Bartók uses similar things.

I have a "Psalmenproprium" by Hans Haselböck (writte 1968), where in one place
there are four (!!!) time signatures at the same time (the following measures
alternate freely between those four time signatures):
2/4 3/4 3/8 5/8

Re: lyrics following split voices

2008-07-29 Thread Bertalan Fodor (LilyPondTool)

No, \voiceOne just changes the stem direction an dthings like that.
\new Voice ="1" creates a new voice context that can be simultaneous
with other voice contexts:

<< \new Voice = "1" { ... } \new Voice = "2" { ... } >>
The implicit polyphony operator:
<< { ... } \\ { ... } >> will essentially do the above.

If I understand it correctly, though it was quite long since I did music
with LilyPond.

No, except for your convenience. The name you give to a voice is
freely choosen, and the "One" in voiceOne is just an internal name to
the first voice, not usable by you as such (voiceOne is taken as a
macro name)

Re: second public draft, NR 2.2 Keyboard instruments

2008-07-29 Thread Trevor Daniels

Looks pretty good. I have only really trivial comments:

* References for keyboards

Missing comma:
"PianoStaff group and third, normal staff for the pedals."
  ,

The sentence:
"This section discusses notation techniques particular to keyboard music."
would be better right at the top.

* Changing staff automatically

In the second example the voice would be better
named "melody" to help non-English speakers.

* Piano pedals

Last sentence:
"Pedalling to the final bar line is indicated by omitting the final pedal up
command." -> " ... omitting the final @code{\sustainOff} command."

Also "pedalling" is the English spelling :)

(Incidentally, these pedalling commands, \unaCorde, \treCorde, etc mean the
proposed \ottava command is not the only one which does not use English.)

Subject: GDP: second public draft, NR 2.2 Keyboard instruments

I'm happy to announce the second public draft of NR 2.2 Keyboard
instruments. This is the last time to (easily) get fixes
included, so please read it and ask about anything that's unclear,
incorrect, or missing.

As always, you can find it from following the GDP output links
here:

Cheers,

Re: GDP: second public draft, NR 2.2 Keyboard instruments

2008-07-29 Thread George_

Hi,

I was wondering whether it was feasible to split the code of the discant
symbols section for Accordion into two or maybe four little chunks, as this
would make it easier to read and reference; alternatively, numbering the
bars both on the output and the code would do that as well, or naming each
bar of the output ; for example, bar one would have a markup saying
'Basson', bar 2 'Bandon', etc.

Just my two cents

Thanks

George

Re: broken octaves

2008-07-29 Thread Stefan Thomas
Dear Jay,
I tried something with:
 quintrauf = #(define-music-function (parser location x) (ly:music?)
 #{
 $x \transpose c g { $x }
 #})

 \new Staff { \quintrauf c' \quintrauf d' \quintrauf e' \quintrauf f' }
With copy and paste You can be very fast with the "\quintrauf"-command, but,
it is not much faster then just typing the notes.
I desire a function, where You can type just once "\quintrauf", and all the
following notes will be changed. I think it must be possible.
