There is always the possibility to export your work in MuseScore to MusicXML
and import it in Lilypond. The MusicXML export for MuseScore is very
accurate and I believe Reinhold did a very good job with the import. So
certainly something to try out.

That's nice, but it's not the doc policy.  Pitches go in
pitches.itely.  Having a standard set of locations for things
makes them easier to find.

No; that gives a general overview.  I mean, it never states what
-bb is.

The pitch-related material goes in pitches.itely.  World music
contains a "References for..." section that points to the relevant
section of pitches.itely.  Add any extra sections to world.itely
that you want, as long as you don't duplicate any material that's
earlier in the NR.

This is the policy that we reached during the year-long GDP.

This was fixed in the English manuals in the development branch
last February, but thanks to you I noticed it was still wrong in the
French NR, which I've now fixed.  Thanks for catching it again.

"Some objects cannot be changed with \override for technical 
reasons. Examples of those are NonMusicalPaperColumn and 
PaperColumn."
Are these the only objects affected? If so, we probably should 
strike the "Examples of those" in favor of "These", otherwise we 
should also cite the others, or refer to some place where they are 
listed?


Good point, and I'm not sure of the answer.  I'm not aware of any
other grobs that require \overrideProperty to be used. 
\overrideProperty

can be used to override properties of (some?) other grobs too.  It
acts like \once \override.

I'll wait for more expert responses before I amend the docs.

No.

Complain to the Ubuntu lilypond maintainer.  I would put latex as
a "suggests" rather than "requires", since you need it for
lilypond-book.  But you certainly don't need it for lilypond
itself.

My point is that if there's an optional way to call TeX, then the
(proper) rendering of that lilypond file requires TeX.

Change the font, then!  I've already mentioned this as a
non-portable part of a lilypond file.

Lilypond itself doesn't have (La)TeX as a dependency -- see:

However, the lilypond-data package in Ubuntu lists several TeX-related

I reinstalled my computer, and on Ubuntu, the lilypond package required
some TeX packages which I noticed, because I mistakenly forgot
to install texlive first, which I usually do.

However, I am not saying that lilypond should depend on TeX,
but if it could have some optional way to call TeX, that would be better.
Perhaps I am a typographical purist, but if I have some text font
in my document, I don't want to mix just any font for lyrics.
Another example is the following. In some of my scores,
I put boxed letters as annotations:

#(make-stencil-boxer 0.1 0.3 ly:text-interface::print)

and then later c1_"a" or something like that.

What would happen for computers without latex?  Or are you
suggesting we should distribute latex (or just tex) along with
everything else in the lilypond app (python, guile, etc) ?

There's no easier way.  Producing an eps and including that in a
markup is the only way.  If you want lots of introductory
explanations, you could use lilypond-book, but I don't think
that's what you're after here.


But this would really be worth adding to lilypond. I am thinking
of something similar to the call of TeX or LaTeX in metapost:

  btex $c^2=a^2+b^2$ etex

or as a string

  tex("$c^2=a^2+b^2$")

That way, you could easily add paragraphs formated with TeX in various places,
you could have all the symbols you want, and especially reach better
homogeneity between the text and the score. One of the most serious
current problem seems to be the discrepancy between the text font
in a LaTeX file and the lyrics font in a score. Perhaps it can be made
identical in some cases, but it is not automatic, and the different
font families hurt the eyes.

If you have a .jedit folder, you should put in your user folder.
It should look something like this:

Honestly, once it's there, I don't know if anything would change
for your situation. If it continues to fail, you might just have
to wait for Bertalan to get back to you. Sorry I'm not more
helpful.

Just a couple quick points -
1) Always "Reply to All" from your e-mail, not just "Reply".

There's no easier way.  Producing an eps and including that in a
markup is the only way.  If you want lots of introductory
explanations, you could use lilypond-book, but I don't think
that's what you're after here.

arbitrary TeX expressions in a score?

Hi,

is it possible to include some arbitrary TeX expression in a score?
Let's assume that for some reason I want to add $\int_0^\infty ...$
above a note. Can it be done? I assume that in the worst case I can
produce an image for this formula and include the image, but is there
an easier way? Such an escape is perhaps not that useful for math,
but there are plenty of cases where it would be useful, when
the annotation becomes real typesetting and some more advanced features
or fonts are needed, or merely some coherence between a score and
the text in which it is embedded.

diatonicTranspose question

useful, but I've hit a snag.  When I try to transpose to -7 the octaves start

The typical way to place a forte is bellow the note:

   d\f  (or d_\f)

It is quite easy to put it at the top as well.

But sometimes (for instance, when we have lyrics) it would be great to
put it bellow, but at the left, of the note.

Typically this would mean putting the forte bellow a barline or bellow
the clef.

Unfortunately it is not possible to add \f bellow these objects (as far
as I know).

Any hint how to do this?

(If this is not easily understandable, let me know and I'll try to
produce some images).

It seems nobody has answered your question. The first thing to note is 
that \cadenzaOn and \cadenzaOff commands affect the full score, i.e. all 
staves. Otherwise, I think the description in the Notation Reference 
more or less says it all, namely that \cadenzaOn simply tells LilyPond 
to stop counting beats and inserting bar lines automatically (which 
again applies to all staves).
If you move the Timing_translator from the Score level to Staff level, 
as described in 
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.13/Documentation/user/lilypond/Displaying-rhythms#Polymetric-notation
then the \cadenzaOn and \cadenzaOff commands only apply to the current 
stave, since they set properties on the Timing context, see 
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.13/Documentation/user/lilypond/Special-rhythmic-concerns#Time-administration

I can certainly understand the logic behind it, but I couldn't find

Oh boy, I was clearly having a great day yesterday ... 'Reading only the
first half of everything' syndrome, both the LM section _and_ Graham's
message discussing adding to the docs.

Anyway, it seems that his suggestion must have got through on a
subliminal level at least, hence my weird follow up email talking about
expanding the Makam snippet into a NR section.

Yup, I'll see what I can do.  I'll try to prepare a patch with git.  It
probably makes it easier to do it in NR because I can prepare the table
with texinfo instead of .ly markup.

I know no more than you about Makam but there are surely enough
resources available to be able to write something that makes sense and
extends the current snippet.  As for sections -- my preference would be
to group all Makam-related stuff together, pitches and all.  This
replicates 2.9.1 on Arabic music, where the note names are discussed in
the second section.

(Arabic note-names are certainly mentioned, in brief, in the 'Note names
in other languages' section of 1.1.1 but they correspond much better to
the standard semitone and quarter-tone pitches than the Makam pitches
do.  So we have two approaches: either Makam as a self-contained entry
in World Music or an extra section in 1.1.1 referring to non-Western
pitches.  I'd go for the former.)

What about translations?  Reading through the Makam snippet I noticed
that it contained multiple translations alongside the core English text.
 How do I address the issue of divergence between English and the other
texts?

The only changes in stable releases so far have been bugfixes (that can
listed for each release at our Google tracker) and documentation
improvments backported from development branch (which have been only

I have an italian keyboard as well and I get the tilde
holding AltGr + ì

I'm on linux, but I guess it's the same on windows..
