Odd things with \repeat percent and R1

2013-01-25 Thread Jim Long
On FreeBSD 8.3 amd64, this works for R1, R1*1, or R1*2, but
crashes lilypond with R1*3 (or 4 ...). Puzzling.

Hi there,

Thanks for your responses. I'll make due with the current span stem
engraver, but I think that it would be easier to extend the functionality
of the \change Staff = "staffName" paradigm to do this more elegantly in
future versions.

cheers,

Hello,

When I need to include full scores into a LaTeX document, I usually use the
LaTeX package "pdfpages" (I guess it also works with XeLaTeX): it allows the
crop the PDF margins, magnify (ou reduce) and other interesting options that
could be usefull for your needs.

This method works (with the older syntax for me, as I have version 2.16.1),
so it would be an acceptable solution; thanks for explaining how it can be
done. The only shortcoming is that I must put in empty bars because the
inserted ossia part doesn't start at the beginning of the line. But maybe
one can fix that with forced linebreaks.

Lilypond-book, Xelatex, and full scores

2013-01-25 Thread David Bellows
Hello all,

I have several projects I'm working on where I have a substantial
amount of text that I want to typeset with Xelatex and intersperse
with full scores (several pages each) generated by Lilypond.

I have both Xelatex and Lilypond set to use the "letter" page size.

By default the scores get cut off on the side along with other spacing
issues. This is at least partly due to the fact that Xelatex/Latex
uses different margins than Lilypond. So I used the geometry package
in Xelatex and am able to get the scores to appear in full but there
are still all sorts of problems with spacing and some graphic issues
(e.g., space between staves is smaller, graphic stuff is not rendering
like it does natively, etc.).

I'm guessing that the page headers in Xelatex might be part of the
problem here as well.

But before trying to go through and redefine all the offending
headers/footers I was wondering if anyone else had already figured all
this stuff out. Is there an easy way to go about getting these full
scores to appear as they do when compiled by themselves? Maybe the
original Lilypond files need to be altered like using a different page
size? Is there a better workflow approach?

I experimented a little with Scribus but as best as I can tell I have
to split up all my pdfs into separate pages but even then the final
output is fuzzy in Scribus. But maybe I'm missing something there (I
only just started using Scribus).

Thanks.

Just to add this:

Assuming, you program did all that settings and they are not mandatory
for you, here is an easier code, which does almost the same as yours
using LilyPonds defaults. It is much shorter and much more readable:

Re: New user - I have an lone treble clef/extra staff

2013-01-25 Thread Noeck
Hi Jon,

which program produces such an output?
I can only guess what could be inteded with that code, because it is
strange in several ways. To learn LilyPond it is better not to start
with automatically generated code like this!
A good start ist the learning manual from the beginning.
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/learning/index

Your question is addressed here:
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/learning/introduction-to-the-lilypond-file-structure

Just a few issues with the example code:
1) If music should occur at the same time it must be grouped with << >>
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/learning/multiple-staves

2) If settings apply to one voice or line of music it must be grouped
with { }
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/learning/music-expressions-explained

3) I removed the \skip because I don't understand why you need it

4) I removed the \ragged-bottom and \ragged-last-bottom because this
makes your 4 bars spread out over a whole page.

My best guess is the following code. Is that what you intended?

Cheers,
Joram

the best advice anyone could give you in this case is to work through
that:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/learning/index.html

You won't have a lot of fun if you're trying to use lilypond without
knowing much (or anything, if I understood you right ..) about it ...
and it doesn't take very long to understand the basics covered in there.
AND you'll be able to write much better ly files - that sequencer source
code looks kinda horrible to me ...

Jon,

Change:

\tempo 4=120

\context Staff = "sysInstBOne" <<

To:

\context Staff = "sysInstBOne" <<

\tempo 4=120

This will put your tempo marking inside the Staff context. By placing it
before \context Staff you force LilyPond to instantiate another Staff context.

Try the following

  \override Script #'avoid-slur = #'outside

and there will be no place left inside of the slur. I am not claiming
that this behavior might not be worse than necessary, but at least with
that sort of additional override, LilyPond does not get confused.

Hi,

if I change the outside-staff-priority of a Script, the Slur is still
placed as if the Scripts would be inside, even if there is more space
now. Is that on purpose?
(I know that the staccato is not placed outside the slurs. But if I
wanted to, shouldn't it be printed nicely anyways?)

{
  c'-.( d'-.) % good looking default
  \override Script #'outside-staff-priority = #1000
  c'-.( d'-.) % not so nice
c'( d') % this shows the slur could be placed closer
}

Could the slur be placed before the script (not only in order but also
when determining the best slur) in case it as a higher priority?

Joram

Re: ledger line crash with very high notes in first chord of system

I presume you don't like the fact that the accidentals are within the ledger
lines, rather like they are in staff lines. What would you want?

Subject: ledger line crash with very high notes in first chord of system

I think I've found a default behavior that could use a little work:

When I make a chord that contains the interval of a major second or smaller,
up high enough to warrant ledger lines, the ledger lines are lengthened, to
accommodate the increased horizontal space needed to write this tiny interval
legibly; however, if a third note requires an accidental, the accidental of
this third note sometimes collides with these lengthened ledger lines. I've
attached photos of some examples.

  fyi,
  Jeff
