The problem is simply that the LSR runs on LilyPond 2.14, and your file 
uses syntax that was only introduced later.

You may find problems between scheme 1.8 and the newer 2.0 on this
topic, I don't have the details at my fingertips but the solution
involves creating a macro define-once instead of that (defined? xxx)
test:

this solution was given to me on the guile-user mailing list, it is
executed at the start of Denemo and after that you can just write
(define-once TACTUS 50) wherever you need to be sure it already is
defined.

what is the recommended/default formatting for ottava marks/brackets
(8va)? I would like to collect some opinions/examples/references on this.

1) 8
2) 8va
3) 8^va (8 + va superscript)
or others?

In bold or not bold? And with dashed lines or dotted or others?

What does E. Gould say or do you know 19th century scores with ottava
brackets?

I am pretty sure that I have seen 8^va bold, but I can't find it. The
only occurrence I could find in my scores was:
Boosey & Hawkes: 8 bold  (with dotted lines)

Thanks for creating the issue on the tracker.
I was playing again with NullVoice, and I noticed some unpredictable
behaviour with the following example :

Here, if I'm not mistaken, as the lyrics are associated with NullVoice
"xyz", the extender should end before, but it acts as if it was
associated with "alto" voice instead. The extender looks the same if I
define "xyz" as :
\new NullVoice = "xyz" \relative c'' { c4. g8 c2 | }
(melodie notes)

I rather like this behaviour of having the lyric extender lasting to
match the melismata of other voices (was trying to do something like
this), but I don't understand why it does so here, as this behaviour
is not systematic.

Should I add it as a comment to the issue you created last time, or
report it as a new one ?

After some tries, as I'm not comfortable enough using scheme, I didn't
find a suitable approach to automatically solve this problem.

I think the best solution for me now is to use the method described in
the manual :
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/notation/techniques-specific-to-lyrics#polyphony-with-shared-lyrics
and to manually build and tailor the NullVoice to have proper extenders.

(example from the manual :)

soprano = \relative { b'8( c d c) d2 }
altoOne = \relative { g'2 b8( a b4) }
altoTwo = \relative { d'2 g4( fis8 g) }
aligner = \relative { b'8( c d c) d( d d d) }

I prefer this method over the other (modifying associatedVoice within

Erik,

Your site is very impressive.

I am also generating single, continuous line scores with Lilypond and am 
wondering what you use to extract your images from PDF.

I was originally using Adobe Acrobat and a plug-in to extract .png images from 
the .pdf. But, as you may have discovered, Acrobat has a 200-inch width 
limitation.

I am currently using Foxit Reader to view and check my very wide PDFs and 
GIMP-2 to extract the images from the PDF.

Do you mind telling me what you use?

Page 28:
The octave sign is written in italic, the numeral '8' is 1 1/2 
stave-paces high.  The optional 'va' is placed flush with the top of 
_ottava sopra_ (_8^va_), flush with the base of _ottava bassa_ (_8va_).


Indicate the extent of the transposition with a line of dashes 
(hereafter called a dotted line).  The line extends from the top 
edge of the _8_ for _8 sopra_ and the base of the _8_ for _8 bassa_, 
and runs parallel to the stave.


And those 8s look bold to me.
