I suspect that you are not using GNU tar while lilypond's tarball gets
created with GNU tar.  Please retry to unpack with GNU tar.

Reason: GNU tar's default packaging mode was changed to
`--format=POSIX` some time ago (at least this is what I see on my
openSuSE box), and there are many tar programs in the BSD world that
don't understand this – inspite of the fact that the POSIX.1-2001
standard is 15 years old.

I suggest that we add option `--format=ustar' to tar to still use the
ancient POSIX.1-1988 standard.

For the opening height:
\override Hairpin.height = 2
For the length if it’s too short by default:
\override Hairpin.minimum-length = 10

I'll send the report to the tar people, but I suspect my system is somehow
broken at a fundamental level.
I am considering trying to install earlier versions of lilypond. Would that
help? Has the installation style changed at some point? I forgot to mention
that many years ago I was able to install it, with the same hosting provider
(though sure enough the OS has also changed since).

Yeah, but the point is, then you have a chord, don’t you? Attach the 
flageolet markings to the notes to which they belong, instead of the 
chord, and it should work, as you said yourself.

My feelings exactly, and a lot of the music I set is 19c or early 20c.

If my defaults don't match lily's, it's not easy at all to over-ride
them :-( witness my repeated moaning as I try to set Brass Band parts -
which are all very self-consistent. We have our own traditions which
don't mesh well with lily.

thanks for sharing your settings! Unfortunately, I get the same error
when switching to the svg backend.

I think it boils down to coding an output-classic-framework for the svg
backend. And I still wonder how that can be missing, while svg output
works nicely without the collect/print machinery of the
lilypond-book-preamble.

Yes, but it does not delete them. Only the ps and log file. The tex,…
files are probably required by lilypond book and not intermediate in
this sense. Just unwanted.

I did a few more hops through the code. But not so successful. I was
more after some enlightment what these functions are intended for. My
guess is now: They collect all scores in the document and produce output
for them. I need only one score per document and hope for a limited
amount of magic in the background. But without, the cropping does not
happen.

Well, yes. But I want it to be scriptable and as few as possible tools
and steps required.

I didn't test it in *this* context, but Inkscape notoriously fails using
embedded fonts, so it just takes *anything* instead of Emmentaler,
usually resulting in files being a complete mess.
Except there have been improvments since I last tried it.

I was answering to the second question, after setting that env variable
manually and rerunning lilypond.

Anyway, I think we are getting somewhere, thanks.
Whichever gs I invoke *directly* on the resulting .ps, I get a .pdf with no
errors. Be it

~/lilypond/usr/bin/gs

or

/usr/bin/gs

So something happens when gs is invoked via ~/bin/lilypond, which makes it
behave as if I were running ~/lilypond/usr/bin/lilypond (which I'm not).

if two articulations of _same_ kind are applied to a _single_ note one
is skipped obviously. The reason may be that it makes no sense to keep

In chords different notes may have different articulations, so
selecting/skipping of equal articulations does not happen, iiuc, even
in a single-note-chord.

That said, one use case for applying the same articulation more than
once to single notes is educational usage.

A workaround (again a more or less terrible one) could be to use
renamed Scripts:

Perhaps not for you, but using DVD-covers instead of CD ones,
makes things a lot easier, esp. if you are going to print out
it yourself to make cd's etc for the you local choir.

How does the lilypond-book-preamble work?

Hi,

could someone explain to me how lilypond-book (esp. the preamble) works?

I read this in ly/lilypond-book-preamble.ly:

several define ...-handler  % what is that?
#(ly:set-option 'backend 'eps)  % what if I want svg?
#(ly:set-option (quote no-point-and-click)) % ok
#(define inside-lilypond-book #t)   % consequences?
#(define version-seen #t)   % ok, I can omit the version

From the code, I could not find how the cropping, removing of indent,
removing of the tagline, output as png happens and where the tex, texi
and count files are produced (I don't need them).

I want to do sth similar with a few modifications:
The preamble supresses the tagline and crops the output which is what I
want.

But I can't tweak the output to SVG. Does that even make sense?  I mean,
is cropping possible with SVG? Firefox can show the svg and it is a
vector graphic (no pixels) but is the reader required to have the fonts
installed? Or will it display in a browser if it is capable of SVG
rendering?
And as I said, I don't need the tex/texi/count files, just the png or
svg (of course I can delete them afterwards by hand).

Well, I was more referring to the *handling* of the file, but of course
the typesetting is also very good. But I wouldn't claim it's better than
what I could achieve with InDesign before. But being really on par with
that, and Free, and so much better to maintain (and version) - there's
really no need to go back ...

next days I'll have the English translation of the liner notes finished
and would need someone to look over it (stylistically), which would then
be quite urgent.

I can't offer any money for the task, only one or two copies of the 2 cd
box when it's ready. See the attached tracklist to a) get an idea of
what kind of stuff the text is about and b) get an idea whether getting
copies of it *is* an offer ;-)
