Bar lines in polyphonic music and words under split voices
I have been working on a piece of music for some time now and cannot seem to
get the following to happen.
1. vocal parts with different measure lengths. Lilypond always seems to want to
line bars up especially when one bar now has six beats from four or changes.
2. attach words to a split vocal line of the form << {}\\ {}>> lilypond seems
to want to just skip over it and go to the next "normal" part.

Engrave error

Volta and alternative problems
Trying to create a second ending in a piano score (am using Frescobaldi) found
the documentation and thought I had followed it to the letter but am getting an
error; unexpected \alternative {.
I can't seem to figure out why. I know this is a long clip but I really don't
know what is relevant so please forgive me.

How can I add horizontal space both after the music and after each stanza. My
score seems too cramped.

Ok sorry, this is what I am using to put additional stanzas under my music. I
was wondering what I need to add to get the additional space after the music
and between the stanzas without being criticized for putting too much code in
my question.

Meter change question revision
thank you for the replies. My problem more specifically is that I am trying to change meteres midstream. So the piece is unmetered as handwritten. But it starts in a basic 4/4 but then only specific bars on specific staves change meters. If I could go unmetered and insert bar lines as needed that would be best, other wise I need to change for example the soprano line from 4/4 to 6/4 while the other lines stay the same or change to something like 7/4.
