Re: Off-Topic: Orchestration Aid
I see that the topic seems not un-welcomed to the list so I post here.. * Thanks for all the replies. My favorite books on the subject are: S. Adler's and Ch. Koechlin's ones. The Korsakoff one seems a little bit outdated for todays orchestral prouesses I don't know Kennan's. Is there many contemporary examples? But one jewel which seems unknown here is the Eugene Bozza's big (wall-poster size) charts of all instruments. There is 2 sheets to be hang on a wall in front of your work desk and there you can see all (really all including commonly accepted ambitus(ses) for vocals) instruments with even the finger charts for strings. It is so convenient, at a glance you get your answer! Albeit at a too beginning level for my taste: http://www.violinonline.com and its derivatives for viola and cello are not bad.. But what I was seeking is something like a java interactive web site where you can query those things related to instrumentation, string instruments fingerboard positions etc.. In a way similar to the following tools I recommend to musicians interested with it: (12-Tone composing tools and set theory composing utilities) http://composertools.com/Tools/matrix/MatrixCalc.html http://composertools.com/Tools/PCSets/setfinder.html They are nice useful, simple to use.. So wanted to know if someone has found a similar site(s) about instrumentation or a software.. Regarding the Sibelius' coloration of outranged notes: I wouldn't go for Sibelius even if it makes me the greatest composer of today, (it makes me lose my time) even if it was free (in a way it is) or even if they pay people to use it ..;) no thanks.. Cheating on Lilypond
As a way to cheat with Lily (! .. I mean to get unconventional things drawn on the score) there is the possibility of drawing things with Acrobat Pro on the pdf.. output vector graphics
I don't know if it is a viable idea, or if it already exists.. It would be nice if Lily can output some vectorial image format (what format is widely recognized?) where many (some or all) notational elements were available to a vector image drawing program (i.e. Corel Draw) where one can turn the beautiful Lily output into some ugly and meaningless pseudo-musical score by dragging, resizing the elements and adding elements musical or not.. all done visually. Ugly and meaningless pseudo-musical-scores are (or more exactly were) fashionable for some composers, how far Lily can cope with that.. Maybe what I refer to is simply called *.ps (postscript) but I was unable to open the Lily ps files in Corel, similarly I wasn't able to open Lily made pdf's neither.. is Lilypond difficult? A composer's point of view
I'm a 12 year Finale user and I also wrote some 500 pages of music with Sibelius and I also know somewhat Igor Engraver and Geniesoft's Overture.. I must say, Lilypond is the winner! Incidentally Lily is the name of my wife:) I had some serious concerns at the beginning. First of all it seems awkward to write text files without seeing the music paper and many fellow friends composers feel the same. However, only a small practice proved it to be a false concern. As a composer ( not a copyist neither a programmer) I can say that typesetting music in a text environment is far better in many points to actually looking at the music paper. I think Lilypond is easier than Finale. One thing I'm still not very comfortable with is: I feel like a gap between the manual and the program reference. The reference is great but written in a style somewhat foreign to me. The journey for a newcomer which starts at manual's first page is not without blackholes. Things that only get clear many many practice weeks later.. Also more advanced editor support may be one of the needs. Here is the way which really made me start: I use WinEdt and I made some 200+ macros which are simply auto-texts to save you a trip to the manual and many probable syntax errors.. The point is whenever I want to set a 2d and a 3rd. voice I just have to click a menu item and fill the notes. I know it is not the most elegant way of doing things. But I'm not everyday on Lilypond and I easily forget and I get distracted from my main job (making music) is I start to mess around with the code. If anyone interested with non-technical discussion I may continue.. my latest windows version 2.7.8 work very well on point and click in acrobat pro the only trouble is that I wasn't able to figure out how to have another editor open Best Regards, Mehmet Okonsar, pianist-composer www.okonsar.com - Original Message - From: Katrien de Vos [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: lilypond-user@gnu.org Sent: Friday, September 02, 2005 2:28 PM Subject: no pdf file generated (windows version 2.7.8) and point and clicknot working anymore Until recently the windows versions of lilypond generated pdf-files. In one of the last versions point-and-click didn't work anymore. Now only .ps files are generated but not pdf-files. I downloaded an older version (2.6.3-1) but this one didn't work either. Has anything changed or is my windows setting different. As far as I know I have only made changes the set-variable because I installed python (which I need for using convert-ly.py). What I have done is to omit the \time x/y command, but lily insists on having a 4/4 meter. Furthermore, I tried to follow the instruction from doc sect. 5.3.7 Unmetered music by setting \score { \set Score.timing = ##f \context Voice = fl { \FluteOne } \context PianoStaff \context Staff = upper \UpperOne \context Staff = lower \LowerOne } and inserting bars by hand in the text for visual division of the music, but lily sets the bars for her 4/4 an addition to those. Is it possible to set unmetered music the way I want with v.2.4.6, and how do I do it? Atonic Key in cadenza
the atonic key function works well in cadenza context but repeated altered notes over a arbitrary barline (see ex. below) do not reproduce accidentals. Can it be fixed? it works if I repeat the statement \atonicKey after each barline - atonicKey = #(def-music-function (parser location) () #{ #(ly:export (make-music 'EventChord 'origin $location 'elements (list (make-music 'KeyChangeEvent 'tonic (ly:make-pitch -1 4 0) 'pitch-alist '((4 . 5) (5 . 5) (6 . 5) (0 . 5) (1 . 5) (2 . 5) (3 . 5)) \set Score . extraNatural = ##f #}) \cadenzaOn { \atonicKey \cadenzaOn{ c'8 c' c'' c'' d' d' d'' d'' \bar | cis'8 cis' cis'' cis'' des' des' des'' des'' \bar | des'' % this one does not get a flat.. unless I put another \atonicKey before des'' c'8 c' c'' c'' d' d' d'' d'' cis' cis' \bar : cis'8 % this one no sharp cis' cis'' cis'' des' des' des'' des''} \cadenzaOff } -- Best Regards, Mehmet Okonsar, pianist-composer www.okonsar.com ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Temporary Staves Above-Below
When I want to start a staff, if I do it inside a context, I have no choice but I get it below the staff of the context I'm in, if I want to use the : \set Staff.alignAboveContext command, I must have it outside any other staff context (that's logical) and I must use \skip to have the new staff start where I want. Using \skip in unmetered long scores can be quite unconvenient.. Am I right assuming that there is no way to cut into the notes of an existing staff context, start a new staff and put it above or below ?.. Example: --- \version 2.7.8 \score { \new PianoStaff { \context Staff = RH { \clef treble { f'2 c'4 d' e' f' r4 r8 c' d'4 e' } } \context Staff = LH { \clef bass {a,2 b,4 g, e, f,g,8} % i cut here into the notes of the LH \new Staff {c''16[ des'' gis'' fis'']} % but I want this staff to be above RH? {c, c, c,4 cis,8 c, d, e, } % remaining notes of LH } } \layout { \context { \Staff \remove Time_signature_engraver } } } Best Regards, Mehmet Okonsar, pianist-composer www.okonsar.com ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
