Creating a table in Lilypond?

2017-09-27 Thread Ryan McClure
Hi everyone,

It's been years since I've last used the mailing list...too long!

I'm in the process of organizing my folk song collection for teaching, and I
want to use Lilypond to do it digitally. I need to create a table at the
bottom of my pages...like, an actual text table. I don't want to cut and
paste my Lilypond score into a document... Is there a way to create a text
table look-alike using \markup?

Thanks!

[Slightly Off-topic] Advice for freelancing?

2015-03-23 Thread Ryan McClure
Hello friends,

I've been really trying for the last two years to become a freelance music
engraver. I've really come to love engraving music, and I would like to make
my hobby into a job. I don't ever think that I'll be able to survive by only
engraving music, but it sure would be nice. I really am not sure where to
start, however, with gaining clients. Up until this point, I've been
engraving music for my peers at my University. However, I am finding that
very rarely do I have work. Does anyone have any advice? Anything would be
appreciated :)

Why is scaleDurations not working?

Hello,

I'm trying to get two different rhythms to line up using \scaleDurations and

Piano crossings and ottava indications don't get along?

2014-11-08 Thread Ryan McClure
Hello all,

These past few days I've been doing a take and take...I'm mailing around
about a lot of problems that I have with some music and I'm not really
responding to any other email...not the best way to behave when returning to
a mailing list, I know, so I hope that you all forgive me.

I am trying to engrave the sample that I've attached. Here is a snippet of
what I've got going in Lilypond...

As you can see, the crossings and ottava aren't getting along nicely. My
client really wants his music to be engraved exactly as he wrote it. What
can I do to make this work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I promise after this project to 1) return to the mailing list and 2)
actually return the favor and help answer problems that I can answer. You
all are the best.

Hello Abraham,

Thank you for the snippet!!! Believe me, this is EXACTLY what I needed! I'm
attempting to figure out how it works--the brackets, that is. How can I
adjust them for other chords? What do each of the values equate to? I'm a
bit rusty on my LilyPondings... Any help would be appreciated.

LilyPond PPA for Ubuntu/other related OS?

2014-11-04 Thread Ryan McClure
I'm about to switch to Elementary OS soon as my default OS...I'm not enjoying
my Arch Linux experience as of late. On Arch, I have access to the AUR for
Arch that allows me to have access to the most recent build of LilyPond. I
would like this for Elementary OS. However, I would prefer a package that I
can update through the package manager rather than installing it from the
command line into a directory...package managers are much cleaner in my
opinion.

So, I'm wondering if there is a PPA that allows me to have the most
up-to-date version of LilyPond? I am about to install Elementary based on
14.04, but in the default repos the most recent version is 2.16 according to
my research. If anything, I'd like 2.18 at least.

Does anyone know if such a PPA exists? If not, I wouldn't mind creating a
PPA for this, but I don't know at all how to create one. Thanks all!

[Off topic] How to start collaborative project

2014-05-04 Thread Ryan McClure
Hi everyone,

This is most certainly an off topic email, but I figured you guys would be the
best place to start when our came to asking for advice.

I'm trying to start an open classical music database that can be used for
tagging audio files. This database would focus on tagging works of music rather
than the tangible album; however, the album and performers would have their own
tag. I can't do this by myself, and I need to find a way to get this project
off the ground. Any advice?

2014-03-26 Thread Ryan McClure
I think that this would be an interesting feature, but the issue with this is
giving a default title page. It would require a user to adjust the title
page to fit the needs of the user. I have created a personal "title page
template," if you will. I'll attach it in the email to see what you think.

Note that my title page has my logo on it, so you'll have to change the .ly

I just did a Google search on a computer that I've never used/logged into

history affecting my results:

"Music notation software"

Lilypond came in at 25.

"Free music notation software"

It came in at 11.

"Free music typesetting software"

It was 7.

"Music typesetting software"

It's number 1.

Just thought I'd share the different results I got.

While I think this is a good idea, I have a few reasons to hesitate. We
don't want to just promote LilyPond to expert users; wouldn't we want any
user to switch over? Any professional can make anything look good. An expert
Micro$oft Paint user could probably reproduce the Mona Lisa if given enough
time.

What LilyPond does better than Finale/Sibelius is more excellent default
engraving. How many times have people used Finale and gotten that dreaded
last-bar-on-its-own-page problem? I believe the best test would be using
ONLY defaults for Finale, Sibelius, and LilyPond to show what the programs
can do--not what experienced users can do.

Re: Placing _\markup below lyrics

2013-12-05 Thread Ryan McClure

I think, because this sets the priority (closeness-to-staff) within the
context and Lyrics is another context below and not part of the staff.
So Lyrics is always placed lower as the lowest object in the Staff above.

That makes sense. So, as of now then, there is no clean way to put
anything below the lyrics that comes from the staff itself? I have to
admit, this is the first time I've seen a situation like this.

Re: Placing _\markup below lyrics

2013-12-05 Thread Ryan McClure
Hi there Jim,

This is messy--really messy. But, here's what I came up with:

\version "2.17.95"

%\paper { ragged-right= ##f }

melody = \relative c' {
  c4 c c c | c4 c c c
  c4 c c c | \override Score.TextScript #'extra-offset = #'(0 . -3)
c4_\markup "melody staff markup"  c c c
}

words = \lyricmode {
  \override LyricText #'extra-offset = #'(0 . 2)
  la la la la
  la la la la
  la la la la
  la la la la
}

\score {
  <<
\melody
\addlyrics \words
  >>
}

Trying to use \override Score.TextScript #'outside-staff-priority had no
affect, and I'm not sure why. So, I added an offset to the markup. This
pushed down the lyrics, so the override in the lyrics pushes it back up. I'm
unsure as to why outside-staff-priority didn't work, though.

Re: Midi for instrument turns into percussion

2013-11-28 Thread Ryan McClure
I found this on the documentation, 3.5:

The MIDI output allocates a channel for each staff, and reserves channel 10
for drums. There are only 16 MIDI channels per device, so if the score
contains more than 15 staves, MIDI channels will be reused.

So, I'm guessing that the channel of percussion is being used for Tenor Sax.

I have 13 different instrument voices and 2 percussion voices in my score.
That is, some use the same instrument, like all 7 different clarinet voices
that I have. What should I do to prevent this problem? I've never had a
score with this many different voices before.

I have 30 channels I suppose--I have 30 voices that are being typed into
the score. Is there a workaround for that?

Midi for instrument turns into percussion

2013-11-28 Thread Ryan McClure
I'm just now finishing a work and am listening to the midi output. The tenor
sax line, for some reason, is sounding as a snare drum percussion part. I am
getting the following warning in my log, and I'm not sure if this is a clue:

warning: MIDI channel wrapped around
warning: remapping modulo 16

Has anyone experienced this before?

Also--all of those random questions that I've asked and have seemed to not
respond to--I will be getting back to those shortly.

Re: formatting a text before the score

2013-11-25 Thread Ryan McClure
I'm working on the first problem still. However, give this a try for the
name:

\markup{ \fill-line{ \line{ } \line { \italic{Anton Tchekhov

Basically, this fills an entire line. By having two lines inside the
fill-line, it spaces one on the left and one on the right. The first one
is empty, hence the { }. The second one, right-aligned, is the name

I'll get back to you as soon as I figure out the top part.

By the way, what version of LilyPond are you running?

Hi,
In order to give the context of a short waltz I wrote for a performance of a
play by Chekhov, I am trying to insert three cues of the play before the score.
Here is my code:
\markup  { \abs-fontsize #12
   \column {
 \vspace #1
 \wordwrap {LIOUBOV On dirait qu'il y a de la musique quelque
part.\italic {(Elle écoute.)}
 }
 \wordwrap {GAÏEV C'est notre fameux orchestre juif. Tu te rappelles,
quatre violons, une flûte et une contrebasse.
 }
 \wordwrap {LIOUBOV Tiens, il existe toujours! Il faudrait l'inviter, à
l'occasion organiser une petite soirée.
 }
 \left-align {\line { \italic {Anton Tchekhov}}}
   }
}

two problems:
- line spacing between two lines of a wrapped line (Gaiev's cue) is bigger
than between independent lines. I cannot find how to modify that.
- I'd like to right align the author's name but writting "right" instead of
"left" just push it further to the left and it gets clipped.

Thank for any help

Re: The ultimate slur shaping function.

2013-11-24 Thread Ryan McClure
I like what I see!!! :) If there's one thing that I spend the most time
on, it's modifying slurs, especially on Schenker graphs. However,
there's one question I have. You mentioned that using \shape would apply
to all following slurs. Is it possible to use \once \shape? I haven't
had a chance to mess with it yet, I've only read the attachments.
Excellent work! LilyPond is getting better and better every day!!!

Hi all,

I'm proud to announce the beginning of a new era in tweaking LilyPond slurs!
Thanks to sponsoring from Kieren, Alexander and Ben, I was able to
improve Lily's \shape function (originally written by David Nalesnik,
who also helped me with these improvements) - it's now possible to
shape slurs in many ways, some of which are considerably more robust
and generic than simple offsets used until now.

In addition to improved \shape, I've also written a function that
allows to simply specify slur attachment points (as per Kieren's
request - this feature returns to LilyPond after being removed about 8
years ago).

See the attachments; the pdfs containing demonstrations of new
capabilities and user documentation are here:

Please test the functions and send me your opinions and feedback.
Maybe I could improve them even more :-)

best,
Janek

PS Here's the original email in which I had announced this project:

I apologize that it took so much time - I was waiting for some
reviews, and also had to finish some other tasks.

Re: MultiMeasureRestNumber centered between staves

2013-11-22 Thread Ryan McClure

I think that this may do the trick:

\version "2.17.29"

\score {

\new PianoStaff <<

\new Staff {

\compressFullBarRests

\override MultiMeasureRest #'expand-limit = #1

\once \override MultiMeasureRestNumber #'transparent = ##t

R1*9

}

\new Staff {

\compressFullBarRests

\override MultiMeasureRest #'expand-limit = #1

\once \override MultiMeasureRestNumber #'Y-offset = 3.5

R1*9

}

>>

}

Essentially, this trick removes the "9" from the top staff by hiding it.
The bottom staff's "9" is moved up to the center of these two staves.
When you use this, if it is not centered perfectly, change the Y-offset
from 3.5 to whatever you need.

Let us know if this helps! :)
