Re: OFF: Help from native English speakers (epsecially if speaking German)

2008-04-11 Thread calvin mitcham
ok, just my guesses...

sometimes, we will just call 4 voice arrangements SATB music, for soprano,
alto, tenor, and bass.

we might call a pleading, begging prayer earnest prayer

we might say omnipotent God for the last one.

Dear English speaking LilyPonders, (especially if you know some German)

Could you please help me finding the best words for the following:

 - how would you call the 4-voice arrangements of hymns used in
presbiterian liturgy. Just hymn arrangement? (Choralsatz in German)
 - what is a good way for translating the German inständiges flehen,
meaning something like pleading, devoted praying
 - what is a good way of translating the German ewig reicher Gott,
meaning something like God, who has power forever. (perhaps a common English
version already exists for this song)

It would be of very much help if you could suggest me some translations,

 Thank you,

 Bert

Re: GDP: LM 3-4

2008-02-08 Thread calvin mitcham
graham:

LM 3 and LM 4 are quite hard going for anyone fairly new to LilyPond.
thank you trevor! i am certainly a newbie, and although i have always found
these sections very confusing, i never spoke up cause i had no suggestions
about how to improve them. now that i'm trying to help, i'll ramble out loud
here a little... to just read these sections is confusing and boring. the
tweaking is especially hard to read. i mean i hardly ever have an issue
about how lilypond engraves, and when it is different than what i'm
transcribing, i usually don't care. i realize i am at the very bottom of the
lilypond user pool, i simply want my lesson pieces larger for my old eyes,
and the midi output is great too. enough rambling.

i was proud/relieved recently, when after ~10 minutes of targetted study, i
got a

\once \override Score.MetronomeMark #'padding = #4
\tempo 4=88
\set Score.skipBars = ##t R1*3

to move the tempo marking above the 3 for the multi-measure rest. when
given a specific problem to solve like this, the lm and nr docs are quite
helpful. i had to get the naming convention, which engraver, and the
property, and it worked out pretty quickly. but to just peruse the list of
objects and properties is painful.
now file structure is another confusing subject where again i have no
sugesstion, but i do wish it were easier for the newbie. i worked on a
couple of pieces for hours trying to use includes etc to completely minimize
the amount of repeating any typing, such as putting music notes for violin,
pianoright and pianoleft in separate files, the combining to print a score,
a piano part with reduced violin above, and a violin by itself. i got
something passable, but never nailed where some things. for example, i could
not get a piano with smaller violin staff without repeating the violin music
with a smaller staff, or having the violin part not show fingerings in the
piano printout.

\prall and \setTextCresc

2007-12-07 Thread calvin mitcham
hi all,

1. \prall makes the mark i'm after, but i get warnings about warning:
Ignoring
grob for slur. avoid-slur not set? it makes my pdf just fine, but can i
easily
get rid of the warning?

2. i want all my crescendos text style. \setTextCresc also works fine, but i
have to set it everytime i cresc. shouldn't it stay text unless i set it back
to
hairpin?

i'm using v2.10.29 through jedit on windows xp. thanks in advance.

  well,yes, some info might help :) i run lilypond 2.6.3 on a 32 bit
studio64 install of linux with kernel 2.6.14. a newer version of lilypond
would cause me to venture outside the comfortable apt-get world into the
scary config, make, make install world. but if you folks are pretty sure
that would help, i'll risk it. below is the .ly file. if i un-comment the
paper block, everything is fine, but when i un-comment the size line, all
the sharps vanish from the pdf, although the natural signs still show up.
  thanks again for the help!

The third option is the best --- you can download the installer from
the LilyPond page which will install it on your system in a harmless
way, bypassing your package manager but without the trouble of
 compiling it yourself.

Try it, you'll like it (and if you don't, you can get rid of the whole
thing with a simple uninstall-lilypond command!)

accidentals disappear

2007-01-26 Thread Calvin Mitcham
i'm new to lilypond, but it's working great to put in my violin lesson stuff,
and get midi output that rosegarden then plays at the very slow tempo i need.
now i'm wanting it to print out large print sheet music, that would be great.
if i add a
#(set-global-staff-size 28), some sharp signs disappear. a search of the list
archive turned up nothing, anyone have a solution?

thanks in advance.
