After starting a rather large, to me, flurry a bit ago.. I was

have both.

enlarging the comma

2013-01-12 Thread info

Hello-

i just tried to do the

override BreathingSign#text =
markup { fontsize #8 { musicglyph
#"comma" } }

in a

 version
"2.16.1"

and it would compile but the breathe didn't get bigger.

Will or can this work in 2.16.1?

Or is there a different thing that
will?

I was excited that the thread was started as I was working on a
cello suite and felt that the sign should be bigger but it doesn't
matter what fontsize I put it nothing changed.

how to change page numbering

2013-03-24 Thread info

Hi-
I'm using version 2.14 to complete a large project.

Looks like from manual that in \paper block I should be able to change
the

page numbering with something like

first-page-number

But so far I've failed to get anything to happen.

So perhaps it's a # set something?

Thanks

Karol-

Thank you this worked as expected.

David-
the manual for 2.16.0 page 487
\paper variables for page numbering
Default values not listed here are defined in
‘ly/paper-defaults-init.ly’

auto-first-page-number
The page breaking algorithm is affected by the first page number being
odd or even.
If set to true, the page breaking algorithm will decide whether to
start with an odd
or even number. This will result in the first page number remaining as
is or being

increased by one. Default: #f.
first-page-number
The value of the page number on the first page.
print-first-page-number
If set to true, a page number is printed on the first page.
print-page-number
If set to false, page numbers are not printed.

Where is the problem?

As usual I don't know how to phrase the question first time here's what
I want;
in the following I need to emphasize either larger or bolder the single
word maps.
David's suggestion does not work I suspect because it's already some
form of bold. So I need more info or a suggestion, and pointing to the
manual so i know where to look next time is most educational.

Here's the header

\header {
  title = "The Map"
subtitle = "What kind of map"
  subsubtitle = \markup {\center-column { "Scene 5" "This scene
introduces the maps projected behind P & D."" P's map is the D'Scudery

easyHeadOn

2011-01-22 Thread info
Since I don't use the number engraver I'm not sure how that looks (meaning
after you've used 5 fingers what do the numbers mean?) but reading the
section on fingering gives you numbers adjacent to the notes (or above or
below) and if you need numbers higher than 5? I use markups.

That's how software like Pure Data deals with it..
As a composer working often with algorythms, number for notes feels
'natural' for me, but i'm afraid it would be hard to convince musicians to
read from them.

one line per note otoh, doesn't seem such a strange system to me. people
who work in 'piano roll' view in sequencers are used to think this way..
i've seen people who 'can't read notes' intuitively create melodies this
way in no time..

in practice, most computer programmers think in midi notes: 60 being
middle C, 72 the C above that, ...
as an extension, some software allows 'factional midi notes' (although
they are not in the midi standard, and hardware synths won't understand
them). so 62.33 is on third of a semitone higher then D. this is not as
far fetched as it may seem. i use it e.g. to present overtone scales in
just intonation..

hairpin problem?

2011-07-02 Thread info

Hello-

I am forcing accidentals in a modal piece. Time signature is
21/8 so the measures are long.

I wanted to do a multi-measure hairpin
(decrescendo) but the hairpin stopped at the end of the first measure at
the forced accidental (!).

1] is there a way around this?

2] is this a
bug or really the way it's supposed to work or

3] is the reason it
stopped there different from my assumption.

Orchestral score, can't find error

2012-10-06 Thread info

Hello-

I 'think' I copied the info out of the 2.16 manual for the
score below but both my editor and Frescobaldi won't compile it and both
say they can't find errors.

It looks weird to me but that's because I
am not used to the 'new' format for this but what's missing. If there
are some >>'s missing it''s because Fresco indicated they were wrong,
however then it looks really wrong to me.

I.E. shouldn't there be >>
at the end of each staffGroup? but when they were included they showed
up as errors.

Also the entire layout section was shown to be error.
even just

layout { }

Hope it's something simple.

Re: please direct to removing page numbers

2012-12-18 Thread info

I'm missing something but am too stupid to figure out what

From
the link that Paul provides I get

print-page-number #f

somewhere in
the paper block should remove the page numbers but here's my paper block
and there's got to be something I've left out because it doesn't do
anything.

#(ly:set-option 'delete-intermediate-files
#t)
#(set-default-paper-size "letter" 'landscape)

#(set-global-staff-size 40)
 #(set! paper-alist (cons '("my size" .

size")
 print-page-number #f
 indent = 30
 short-indent = 15

right-margin = 15
 top-margin = 15
 bottom-margin = 15
 }

So if you'd
like to just direct me to the section of the manual that I obviously
don't understand that would be fine or if it's a single character or
even two send it on

Thanks

Re: Nesting SLurs and phrases

I would have expected something like this to work
e''8-1^\markup {\bold "#8"} \slurDown
(
\slurNeutral
(f-2 e f) fis-3 (f-2 fis f\))

but it won't compile. So I'm still not understanding that section or
I'm placing the \slur in the wrong place.

Kieren-
I copy/pasted your suggestion into the piece and the slurs/phrases all are up.
Explanation-
all of the notes are one phrase
each group of four 8ths are slurred. In the original the slurs are
under the 8ths and the phrase mark is above.

Is this what you're trying to do?

music = {

Note that the slur marking ( comes *AFTER* the note you want the

I did read both and the lsr example and I just tried your ^ which I

However nothing produces what I am trying to get. And your latest did
not change my example the phrase still goes up. as do the slurs. As it
did in the previous example you sent.

I have tried_\slurDown and it wouldn't compile.

re: opera/musical engravers

2013-12-16 Thread info

Kieran-
I am finished with my latest opera "The Map" we're starting a
kickstarter proposal in January or Feb. The director and conductor are
on board, auditions probably in Sept '14.
8 singers, 8 instrumentalists, minimal spoken dialogue fully scored
out.

I did not use lily -book it was/is easier for me to adjust page numbers
per scene since there are always rewrites and scene changes (there have
been two so far).

I did set up a full score template and adjusted it per scene, this
turned out easier for me than to create a new one for each one. Since I
do not use bar lines when I compose it also allowed me to introduce time
signatures where they were needed in the top voice at all times.

The score is in c with accidentals in forget as when printing the parts
it will make it easier for me to understand the 'problems' with lily's
transpositions.

Doing this in probably not the prettiest code and in most likely
unfashionable way allows me the greater freedom to understand what was
going on while engraving.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hello all!

I would love to hear from anyone who has engraved a full opera or
musical (with at least vocal score plus full score) in Lilypond.

Specifically:
1. Is lilypond-book the only sane way to do it?
2. What functions/extensions/tricks did you use to bend Lily to your
will?

3. What pitfalls are to be watched for (and hopefully avoided)?
4. What limitations cannot [currently] be overcome?

Thanks,
Kieren.

Re: Is there a best practise for 3 voices one hand piano?

2013-12-19 Thread info

Alas I'm not looking for more normal but I do want it to be explicit
so eliminating the ties by making the chords dotted values takes away
from it.

You using top and bottom voice is interesting I'm not sure I
understand how that is 'better' than what I have done except making it
more separate in this instance but when there is a single voice this
would make it more difficult for me to track what is going. I think.
Basically in terms of the way it looks you've confirmed that I'm on the
right track if not the nicest coding.

Thanks

two staves different unequal time signatures

2014-05-24 Thread info
Hi- I did a search and found something about 'translate' but when I
clicked on the link nothing came up and I can't find anything else in
the manuals.
What I need are two staves (or more but for now a duet) with different
time signatures and they will only line up at the ends of each system

But I need a pointer towards the solution if it's in the manual and if
it's not some help as to what to type and where to put it.

I'm using version 2.18.0

The contents of your web-site, the information therein concerning your realized projects, way of working, and/or the products offered invited me to approach you with an invitation for collaboration in the field of software development, documentation and maintenance.
When approaching (potential) customers for the realization of (parts of) projects in information technology (possible) suppliers use (to) frequently a model that should be fit for any project
Such an approach is (frequently) wrong and leads to disappointed customers and suppliers. A more preferred approach is to determine the way of working based on the characteristics of a project, learning to know each other and above all knowing each others possibilities, expectations and limitations.
We therefore prefer to work out the advantages, disadvantages (they exist) and the risks involving the outsourcing of software development or parts thereof in collaboration with you. We trust that a good and above all communicative approach of collaboration will lead to an important reduction in the development en production costs. Such a cost reduction is above all possible since the actual programming and documentation work will be executed in Kyrgystan, Central Asia.
If you are interested and feel the desire to exchange opinions and thoughts concerning the above than feel free to contact us on our web site www.it-ts.com, or www.exa-it.com the web site of our partner in The Netherlands. The contact will give us both the opportunity to see if collaboration in a profitable manner belongs to the possibilities.
Feel free to ask questions of any nature concerning our activities. We are there to serve you.
Kind regards.J. BrouwerIT&TS

I would really like to use the midi2ly tool, but I don't know how to do this.  I am just getting to grips with the terminal, having used a mac now for over two years.  Until I found Lilypond, I'd never felt the need to dip into the terminal.  I have followed the instructions in the readMe:"Put the lilypond.sh script somewhere in your path, eg.  cp lilypond.sh /usr/local/bin/lilypond "   etc...Also, I have carried out similar instructions to put lilypond-script-wrapper.sh into /usr/local/bin/ , creating symbolic links for midi2ly etc.  So that the following is contained in the recommended directory:$ ls -F /usr/local/bin  [EMAIL PROTECTED]                        lilypond*                       [EMAIL PROTECTED]                        dfont2res*                      [EMAIL PROTECTED]                 showfond*fondu*                          lilypond-script-wrapper.sh*     tobin*frombin*                        [EMAIL PROTECTED]                       ufond*Still, I'm not sure how to launch midi2ly itself.  I have tried typing midi2ly while in the directory /usr/local/bin/ and also in the directory /Applications/Lilypond/Lilypond.app/Contents/Resources/bin/ (which I have noticed contains the unix executable file called midi2ly).  Always, -bash: midi2ly: command not found is returned.  I run Lilypond 2.7.11-1 on mac os 10.4.2, with macpython 2.3 installed (though it doesn't seem to open).  Python version 2.3.5 runs in the terminal.--- End Message ---

Currently the default behavior for \key is to put the key
change before the barline. I'm quite sure however that the
correct notation is to have the key change after the
barline.

Yes, I know I can shift the barline and the key signature.
But shouldn't the default behavior be the correct one?

Thanks
