Removing bundled LilyPond

2008-09-24 Thread notesetter

I'd like to remove LilyPond 2.10.33, which came bundled with Ubuntu Studio
8.04 and then install 2.11.59. I ran the install shell script and 2.11.59
installed in my home directory fine. However, when I go to use it, the
'lilypond' command still invokes version 2.10.33. I started to remove the
old version through synaptic, but it also tries to remove other packages
that I want to keep like rosegarden and some others that I think I shouldn't
remove.

This appears to present me 3 options:

1) Install 2.11.59 via shell script and alter my system so that the command
'lilypond' points to the new installation in my home directory.

2) Uninstall the packages lilypond, rosegarden, ubuntu-studio audio and the
others it synaptic says I have to remove if I remove LilyPond so that I may
install and use 2.11.59.

3) Continue to use version 2.10.33.

The first option seems workable, if there's a way to do it. The latter two
options are really not viable, since I may want to use Rosegarden in the
future and I would like to take advantage of the newer version of LilyPond.
Are there other options that I'm missing? Is there a more correct way to
go about this?

Also, someone on the Ubuntu Studio user list mentioned making a .deb package
for LilyPond that would presumably solve this problem. I've also asked about
that in the past on this forum. It would be convenient if one could install
LilyPond through a package manager like a lot of other Debian/Ubuntu
applications. If I have the time (and I think I do), I would be willing to
learn to do this work myself, provided it's within my limited (but hopefully
expaning) scope. I would probably only commit to making a package for stable
releases though.

Does anyone else think this is a good idea?

Thanks,

Dave

\shiftOn doesen't behave as expected

2008-08-17 Thread notesetter

I'm typing some guitar music with version 2.10.33 to teach myself how to use
LilyPond. I'm using the command \shiftOn to move inner voices so that they
are clear and not colliding with other voices. I'm also typing the upper
voice and lower voice separately, in hopes to avoid extra typing and overly
complex use of syntax.

My problem is, sometimes \shiftOn moves the inner voice to the left, and
sometimes to the right. See the attached .ly file:

In the first bar, using \shiftOn on the downstem C in the upper voice causes
both the upstem portion of voice one, and the downstem lower voice to shift
to the right. In the second bar, using \shiftOn only on the lower voice
moves it to the left (instead of the right like I would expect) and leaves
all of the upper voice unchanged (also what I'd expect). In the third bar,
using \shiftOn on the upstem E on the upper voice also moves the lower voice
to the left. What I want, is for the lower voice to move slightly to the
right, while both directions of the upper voice keep the default horizontal
alignment.

In the second line, \shiftOn does what I want it to, and avoids note column
collisions between voices. What's the difference?

Thanks,

Dave http://www.nabble.com/file/p18992493/snippet1.ly snippet1.ly

ubuntu package

2008-07-25 Thread notesetter

Is there an Ubuntu package for LilyPond? Suppose I'm using LilyPond 2.10.33
and want to upgrade to the latest (development) branch. Is there a software
source I can type in and then have the latest version downloaded and
installed via synaptic?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: notation and tablature (+bend, slide etc.)

2008-07-02 Thread notesetter

I'd like to second rosea's sentiment about tablature. I'm just learning
LilyPond and would like to help the programmers improve LilyPond's support
for fretted instrument tablature, including support for bends, slides,
ligado and the various other instrument specific notations.

I've been a professional guitar transcriber and music engraver for about 8
years and I currently work with 2 of the largest publishers on their
guitar/TAB publications on a freelance basis. As of right now, I am prepared
to help in a consulting capacity for improvements in these areas (I have no
background in programming). In the future, I may be able to sponsor new
features (especially in conjunction with other sponsors) that will improve
LilyPond's capacity to write fretted instrument tablature.

If there's anyone working on improving these features currently, please let
me know if you have questions about shapes/exact placement/etc. The Tab
Legend posted by Rosea is a bit outdated. Although most of the symbols in
current usage are similar to those on the legend, I feel their placement in
the score needs to be updated. Caveat: I tend to work slowly, so for me,
this would be a long-term commitment and I wouldn't expect results to be
immediate.

Please let me know if there's anything I can do (consulting on
appearance/placement of symbols, testing new features, etc.)

Thanks to the developers and everyone who posts helpful information to this
list. Of all the notation tools I have used or tried, LilyPond is the most
dynamic and exciting.

Best regards,

David Stocker

It supports bend. About the others, I'm not sure. When I wrote
 musicxml2ly, I
was looking for them, but then I don't know how they should look in the
 score, anyway.

Maybe you can give some examples for them?

 Hi all,

I've made a scan of the notation-tablature-legend from the book 'Eric
Clapton - Unplugged', (which is one of the best selling guitar books I
 think).

I made a *.png and a *.pdf you can download here:
 http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/lib/exe/fetch.php?id=manuals_tutorials_and_howto_scache=cachemedia=notation_tablature_legend_clapton.pdf

 http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/1259/notationtablatureclaptolc8.png

I didn't find options for bends, pull off, slide, hammer on etc. for
Lilypond and I think there are a lot of guitarists, bass players and
more, who would love to see a better tablature support for Lilypond.
Especially now with the export function in TuxGuitar to Lilypond.

I'm looking forward for reactions and I hope some smart guys can make
this happen for Lilypond. If I can give support or if you need more
information about tablature and notation, you can always ask!

 Thanks in advance,

 Roooz

Re: Flamenco/Rasgueado and Lilypond

2008-03-03 Thread notesetter

Hello everyone,

Hi all. I did a Google and an Archives search on how to notate
rasgueado with lilypond, and the instructions there said to use an
arpeggio.

For rasgueado indications, typically an arpeggio line is used with an
arrowhead at the top or bottom to indicate the direction of the strum--up
arrowhead to indicate down strum (lowest sounding string to highest
sounding) or down arrow to indicate an up strum. Often, the right hand
finger to use is indicated in conjunction with the rasgueado symbol--the
standard p i m a symbols for the right hand fingers with the
addition of x for the pinky finger. Sometimes, simply the abbreviation
Rasg. in italics is placed underneath the chord, leaving it to the
performer to decide the manner of execution. This is the notation used in
Spanish and English books that I have seen. Italian, German or other
language editions may be different (naturally).

I've since discovered on Wikipedia that the up bow/down bow notation
used for violins can be used for up strokes/down strokes for plucked string
instruments.

The up bow and down bow symbols are usually used only for plucked
stringed instruments played with a plectrum. This is mostly restricted to
popular music-chiefly method books.

As I'm brand new to lilypond (and thus far, really enjoying it), I don't
know how to tell lilypond to put arrowheads on arpeggio lines for rasgueado
notation.

Anyone?

Hope this is helpful, Timothy--and anyone else whose mind this question may
have been burning in.

Re: music notation

2007-10-31 Thread notesetter

Later versions of Finale export to musicXML. Check to see if this is
supported by a newer version of notepad. If not, you may need to have help
from someone working with a full version of Finale.

Good luck,

Dave

The lilypond-user mailist can answer this in more detail than the bug

use lilypond without problems, but I do not believe that finale files
 can be imported to lilypond.

The best route is probably musicXML, but I'm not certain if finale can
 create musicxml files.

Can finale notepad files be easily imported into Lilypad?

Professional LilyPond users?

2007-10-31 Thread notesetter

I'm just wondering (out of simple curiosity) if there are individuals in this
forum or elsewhere who are using LilyPond to engrave commercial projects.
I'm new to LilyPond but thus far I like what I see. I have entertained the
thought of offering LilyPond engraving as a service (after I become much
more proficient with it) sometime in the future and wonder if there is
anyone currently using this wonderful software in a commercial capacity.

Thanks,

Dave
