We're much closer.  I now get with C-c C-f and similar with C-c C-l

lilypond (GNU LilyPond) 1.9.8
lilypond: error: `/usr/bin/lilypond-bin --version ' failed (132)
2Dvi exited abnormally with code 1 at Fri Sep 19 14:20:24
