Inserting an inline Tie/Slur Symbol in LaTeX Documents Using LilyPond or Other Methods

2024-08-21 Thread Peter X
Dear LilyPond Community,

I am currently working on a project where I need to incorporate musical
notation symbols directly into a LaTeX document. Specifically, I am looking
for a way to insert a tie or slur symbol (the curved line connecting two
notes) as an inline element within the text.

I understand that it might be possible to achieve this using LilyPond
embedded within LaTeX, but I am seeking guidance on the best practices for
doing so. If anyone has experience with this or could suggest a reliable
method—whether using LilyPond or another LaTeX package—I would greatly
appreciate your insights.

Additionally, if there is a specific glyph that represents a tie/slur
symbol that can be used within LaTeX, I would be interested in learning
about that as well.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and for any examples or advice you
can provide.

Best regards,

Peter

You’re far better off moving to LilyPond 2.23.80 at once.

Here is how I installed it on my Mac Mini M1 some days ago.

Problems with pdf output using Lilypond Version 2.20.0

2022-10-29 Thread Ian West
Dear Colleagues,
I have greatly enjoyed using Lilypond on Apple laptops for many years;
first Lilypond 2.12.3 on a 2008 Apple Mac., then Lilypond 2.18.2. on Apple Mac
2008 and Apple MacPro 2012. Finally I bought AppleMacPro M2,2022 running
Monterey 12.4.
I understood that the 64-bit M2 chip required a later version of
Lilypond and on 12 August 2022 I downloaded Lilypond Version 2.20.0 (Build from
11-03-2020 16:32). After a few initial problems (I think having to change the
default ' or " marks.) I used it successfully, following a manual 2.22.2.
I was urged to use Frescobaldi to enter the text, and I got as far as
downloading MacPorts-2.7.2-12-Monterey. But [a] I like entering text with the
straightforward text editor as I have been doing for 10 years, and [b] I do not
want to bother with MacPorts, Frescobaldi, Ghostscript or any command line
entry. I do not think I have any use for Lilypond if I cannot go on as before;
at 80 I am too old to change.
Fortunately, I have, back at home the old white 2008 Apple MacBook
running Lilypond 2.12.3. But I am in Mexico for 3 months with the AppleMacPro
M2,2022. I wish I could edit my library of tunes, but it now jams at the end of
compiling and there is no pdf, but a rotating wheel; and, occasionally the
'log' message:

I suspect it is a late stage and trivial problem of writing the pdf. Perhaps
installing Adobe (or another pdf writer) would cure this. Has anyone any ideas.

Actually, it was pretty simple:
1. take a couple of lines (some rotated), a couple of circled markups (note

Re: using lilypond in LaTeX (MacTeX)

2018-02-19 Thread Br. Samuel Springuel
LilyPond is not a LaTeX package, but a standalone program for
typesetting music. To combine LilyPond and LaTeX output into the same
document, you have several possibilities:

1) lilypond-book:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/usage/lilypond_002dbook

This is a pre-processor script which comes packaged with LilyPond. It
scans your document, identifies and extracts the LilyPond content, runs
lilypond to generate images of that content, and then generates a new
TeX document in which the LilyPond content has been replaced by
`\includegraphics` commands which point to those images. The script is
also capable of generating other formats (like html) as it is designed
to work with the texinfo system in which LilyPond's own documentation is
written.

2) lyluatex: https://github.com/jperon/lyluatex

This package uses the Lua scripting capabilities of LuaTeX to execute
lilypond from within a TeX document. This streamlines your workflow
over lilypond-book because now there is just one compilation step: the
compilation of the TeX document. Its behavior is otherwise very similar
to lilypond-book as it is intended to be a complete drop-in replacement
for it. Development is ongoing and the package has just reached the
point where it should be able to reproduce all of lilypond-book's
non-texinfo capabilities. There are also a couple of additional
features which are either in the works or have already been implemented
which are designed to make the output look nicer automatically.

3) manual score inclusion

You can also use LilyPond to create images (or whole pdf pages) which
can be manually included in your LaTeX document just like any other
images (or pdf pages). This option will give you the finest level of
control, but you'll have to do everything for yourself, which makes it a
much longer process.

My personal choice is #2, but I might be slightly biased as I help out
on that project.

using lilypond in LaTeX (MacTeX)

2018-02-19 Thread Brian J. Christie
Good Morning,

I am somewhat new to using LaTeX. I recently upgraded from 2013 to 2017
MacTex and installed Lilypond 2.18.2. I have tried to incorporate some
simple lilypond code in LaTex and it hasn't worked yet.

I can create a pdf directly from Lilypond. Specifically, I can compile ->
typeset file the attached "Welcome to Lilypond" file. (Both code and pdf
attached) But I cannot run lilypond code in MacTeX. I get an error that
says that Lilypond.sty is missing.

I have put \usepackage{lilypond} in the preamble.

I am attaching the First Music.tex and associated files. I get the .pdf
after hitting enter several times to get through the errors.

What am I doing incorrectly?
Thank you for your help. I am hoping the solution is simple.

I am running Mac OsX v. 10.13.3 with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7.

Hey all,

I know it's been quite a while since I last shared a tutorial video with the
community, but I am happy to announce that I am back to my normal,
consistent, weekly upload schedule. I've had to deal with some family
situations, health concerns, and it all took way longer than I thought it

I love LilyPond and it's such an amazing piece of software and the community
is such a great resource that I am so proud to give back wherever I can. I
do these tutorial videos as a way to say thank you to all of you for all
that you've done to help make LilyPond as amazing as it is today. Just want
to give back however I can.

I've uploaded two new tutorials tonight for those who are interested. I have
created a complete, step by step guide on setting up MIDI keyboards for MIDI
input to your scores (step-recording), configuring MIDI playback, instrument
assignments, MIDI channels, and MIDI export. I also talk about some new
updates in the LilyPond changelog as well.

I just wanted to share these links in hopes that new users may find them
useful and they'll love LilyPond as much as we all do.

I'm going to be making new Scheme/LilyPond tutorials next week, along with
focusing on score layouts and tweaks/contexts. Please leave a comment if you
have any feedback or requests.

Thank you!

Hope you all have a nice week,

created a complete, step by step guide on setting up MIDI keyboards for MIDI
input to your scores (step-recording), configuring MIDI playback, instrument
assignments, MIDI channels, and MIDI export. I also talk about some new
updates in the LilyPond changelog as well.

I just wanted to share these links in hopes that new users may find them
useful and they'll love LilyPond as much as we all do.

Here is the link:
http://bit.ly/2czb2HE

I'm going to be making new Scheme/LillyPond tutorials next week, along with
focusing on score layouts and tweaks/contexts. Please leave a comment if you
have any feedback or requests.

Thank you!

Hope you all have a nice week,

Ben

Hi Jud,

I would recommend working your way through the Learning Manual
(http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/learning/). That link is
for version 2.18 (the stable version), which I would recommend for new
users. Feel free to use Frescobaldi as your editor throughout.

Once you are a bit more proficient, the Notation Reference will be
useful (http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/notation/). This
includes a cheat sheet, which you might find useful:

http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/notation/cheat-sheet

Frescobaldi also has a quick insert toolbar (Tools menu > Quick insert).

Good luck!

Greg.

Hi Jud,

I'm using the Mac version but I think it's the same. The welcome notes
are contained within a comment block in the editor window:

%{ text here %}

Hopefully at the bottom of the window, you have some LilyPond code
starting with \header. Try modifying the notes contained within the
\relative section, and then typeset the file by going to the 'Compile'
menu and clicking 'Typeset file'. You may need to close re-open the PDF
file that LilyPond creates to see the changes you have made.

As Anders has said, Frescobaldi is a very useful editor, with many more
features than the basic LilyPond GUI.

Hope that helps. Welcome to LilyPond!

Greg.

Hello Jud and Welcome to the wonderful pond!

I would really recommend you to download and install Frescobaldi.
http://frescobaldi.org/

Frescobaldi is an Editor/IDE for creating Lilypond files.

Lilypond take on (or multiple) text files with commands for how it
should create the sheet music.
You can create the file in any (notepad) text editor, but as I said
Frescobaldi will get you there much faster and easier!

Best of luck!

PS! Reading the Introductions http://lilypond.org/introduction.html will
save you time!

MMA using lilypond syntax/style

2015-06-13 Thread Stjepan Horvat
Hi guys..
The other day i was trying to practice jazz improvisation on linux.
I was searching for a simple/fast working software that would help me
practice.
I found about MMA and it is cool - text based, midi output/export

but

it wasn't so clean regarding "musicly writing" speaking.
So i had this tought.
Lilypond has a great syntax and has also midi output/export.
Has somebody tried doing something with it?

I onced tried to write a complete pop song with lilypond and I was literally
sweating.
Idea behind the MMA is great.
When you write a groove you define the drum parts, groove.
And then you say use this groove. For example:

use 44
Tempo 120

Groove Main
1 Gsus/C G/B
2 Gm/Bb Ab
3 C/E Eb
Groove Fill
4 Cm Dm G@2.5

Has someone use a combination of variables and scheme to do such a thing?
What do you think about the idea?

Re: Using lilypond examples in an essay or text document

2015-04-04 Thread James Harkins
Org-mode is a pretty remarkable way to do this. You can embed LilyPond source
code directly into the document's markup. Then, when you export to LaTeX, it
can compile the LP snippets automatically and insert them into the result.

 begin sample org file
#+PROPERTY: header-args:lilypond :prologue \header{tagline=##f}

#+TITLE: Org-mode, LaTeX, LilyPond
#+DATE: <2015-04-05 Sun>
#+AUTHOR: James Harkins

#+LATEX_CLASS: article
#+DATE: \today

If you're into What You See Is What You Mean, org-mode supports LilyPond code
blocks:

#+BEGIN_SRC lilypond :file demo.eps :exports results
\relative c' { c4 e g e f d b g }
#+END_SRC

And even automatically trims the result!
 end sample org file

The main drawback is that it's ideal for people who already use Emacs, but if
you don't use Emacs, then you would have to learn Emacs.

There is a plugin for OpenOffice called OOoLilypond which I used a couple of
years ago. I can’t remember all the details of installation, etc, but
essentially you create an ordinary OpenOffice Document, type in your text, and
then switch over to the plugin and key in (or copy-and-paste) a fragment of
lilypond code.

It does a very nice job of mixing text and engraved music.

Michael

At a more general level: What kind of scores do you want to use in the
text document: "music examples" (i.e. single system excerpts), scores
(i.e. multi system or even full-page) or inline within paragraphs?

Of course you can try to insert PDF, EPS, SVG or PNG files in text
documents, then the option -dpreview may be of use for you (creating a
cropped file with only the first system), or using \include
"lilypond-book-preamble.ly", which will produce cropped PDF files for
each system of your score.

Lyx and Scribus both allow Lilypond source to be included in frames

Dear Lilypond list,

We are plotting a networked score system, where each part can be updated
dynamically from a central controller. In the simplest case, this would be a
set score, with a means to indicate the current bar, as an ensemble plays -
this might be a vertical line scrolling through, a change in font colour etc.
This would then be displayed on a tablet.

Lily pond seems like it might be a nice starting point to develop something
like this - can anyone advise: Is this something which could be developed using
the API as a starting point??

Many thanks in advance.

Hey Alice,

If you are not set on using LilyPond, Guido is made exactly for this sort of

Otherwise, if you want to use LilyPond, I have a project with a couple other

I think (but don't take my word for it) that a scrolling cursor would be
harder to achieve, but for changing colors or the like you could
experiment with outputting to SVG. There's much that can be done with
that, including "dancing notes" ;-)

So try to create a new snippet and click on the "Preview" button (e.g. the

Has anyone else problem with the LSR preview ?

Great!
Just a final comment. You'd better save the music in a variable and copy it
in Staff and TabStaff conrtexts, so you don't have to do any copy&paste.
Also the \shape command can affect Staff and TabStaff separately:

issue 1196 above). However, you can work around this problem by adding

I presume that this means something like the following:

\version "2.18.0"

\include "benddefs.ily"

\score {

  <<
    \new Staff { \clef "treble_8"
  \bendOn
  a'4 ( b' )( a' ) \bendOff \hideNotes \grace a' ( \unHideNotes g' ) |

  \bendOn
  a'4 ( b' )( a' ) \bendOff \hideNotes \grace a' ( \unHideNotes g' ) |

}

I don't know how to make the suggested adjustment to the slur shape with \shape.

Hi Martyn,
Since the image you provide does not reflect LilyPond grobs I can give you
2 options which look close :

%%%
\version "2.18.2"

  \once\override TextSpanner.style = #'trill

A simple way to get the line for vibrato would be to adapt a TextSpanner
object:

 \version "2.19.5"

{

  \override TextSpanner.style = #'trill

  c''\startTextSpan c''\stopTextSpan

The problem and the workaround are described in the current home of bend.ly:
https://github.com/openlilylib/snippets/tree/master/notation-snippets/guitar-string-bending

"""
You can't use hammer-on and pull-off when \bendOn is active, because this
snippet uses and transforms the slur engraver. This implies that you
cannot, for instance, start a pull-off right after a bend release. This is
one of the reasons why a bend engraver is needed (see issue 1196 above).
However, you can work around this problem by adding an hidden grace note
where the pull-off should start; you may have to use the \shape command to
adjust the slur shape.

More questions about using Lilypond for guitar music

2014-06-10 Thread Martyn Quick
Thank you for the kind person who helped me out the last time I was trying to
get to grips with Lilypond and guitar music.  I suspect these two are more
challenging.

1. Is it possible at all to combine bends with hammer-on / pull-offs at all?
(e.g., a hammer-on immediately followed by a bend, or a bend-release followed
immediately by a pull-off)  From what I read, the answer is no - since the
current implementation of bend hacks the slur, which is what is also used for
hammer-on / pull-offs.  (And if that is the case, is there any chance it will
be addressed at some point?)

2. A common notation in guitar music is vibrato - is there any way to typeset
such notation in Lilypond?

True, but I wanted to start from a working latex file with PNG images
in it, before I passed it through the converter. Neither PDF nor EPS
images are allowed in the final ebook, and the converter just converts
whatever I pass to it. My results so far are that the converted file
has no images except what I explicitly insert. And I think I've found
the problem. Two problems, actually.

One is: I had \includes in my initial tests. I managed to flatten the
document, but with tiny documents I did not bother to flatten them.
lilypond-book files have \input commands and therefore they are
flatten-needing.

The second problem is that lilypond-book generates per-system EPS with
names like cf/lily-481ba953-1.eps along with cf/lily-481ba953.eps (no
-1 here) whilst generated PNGs are just like cf/lily-481ba953.png. The
generated latex file tries to include the image with the -1 suffix and
no extension, so there is no matching PNG for that. My converter can
not guess it. And you can not switch freely between latex and pdftalex
for this reason. That, or I am doing it bad.

I use \usepackage{graphicx} and can manually insert PNG images with
.png extension \includegraphics{}, and it works.

Thank you, I'll perform more tests and will post my results.

I don't see the problem. If you call pdflatex, it will not be
interested in EPS files. And you stated you did not want to call LaTeX
anyway, instead using some ebook converter.

It seems both PDF and EPS are generated, so what should I do to force
latex to pick the PNG and not the EPS? For HTML it looks easy: does pick the PNG file, but you're right,
\includegraphics{file} lets latex choose. I really, really thought
lilypond-book made this easy. Instead, do I have to manually remove
all EPS files by hand? It doesn't sound good.

The generated .tex file does not specify the file extension for the
imported graphic files, so that it is up to (pdf)latex to pick the
preferred format.

To accomplish what you want, I think passing your own lilypond flags

No; sorry if I was unclear.

The lilypond-book tool makes easy to include lilypond music in latex,
texinfo and HTML documents. Whay you write is the music directly into
the latex document, in a \begin{lilypond} ... \end{lilypond} block.
Then, lilypond-book preprocesses this and generates EPS images and
another document which has the EPS files included as images. The
documentation says you can generate PDF images and PNG bitmaps as
well. So far, so good.

The problem is, I know lilypond-book can produce PNG images for HTML,
EPS images for latex, and PDF images for pdflatex, but what I'd like
is to automatically generate PNGs __for latex__ for including via
\includegraphics{} as you said, but (obviously) without losing the
lilypond-book funcionality, which --as we know-- is to include
lilypond music in your document as lilypond code, preprocess it, and
generate another document with the images of music in it.

Thanks. I suspect I am missing something obvious here.

latex with PNG images using lilypond-book?

2013-04-29 Thread Francisco Vila
Hello. I am trying to create an e-book in ePub format from a latex
document via lilypond-book and pandoc.

EPubs can not have images in PDF format, so I'd like to prepare a
latex file with PNG images. We are saying in the manuals (see
http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/usage/lilypond_002dbook.html
Running lilypond-book) the following:

... The pictures are created separately, yielding PostScript output
or PNG images, and those are included into a LaTeX or HTML document.

and the --pdf option creates PDF images from lilypond snippets for use
with pdflatex. But if I omit the --pdf option, EPS images are created
for inclusion instead. This compiles fine with the latex command and
dvips, but EPS images are not getting into the resulting ePub from
pandoc, either.

I imagine that PNG images are created for HTML, but what about PNG for
latex? Does anybody know how to?

Thank you,

1. Add the LilyPond bin directory to %PATH%:

2. Invoke lilypond-py via Python (doesn't work from command line):

Olivier,

Don't know for sure, but this might very well be a 32/64-bit issue.
Could you attempt running it using a 32-bit version of MiKTeX?

32-bit binaries can't execute a 64-bit binary within the same process
and I would guess that Lilypond-book is attempting to run MiKTeX within
the same (Windows) process rather than having Windows start a completely
new 64-bit process to run MiKTeX and pick up the results of MiKTeX
processing afterwards.

Re: Publishers using LilyPond?

2012-08-14 Thread Robert Schmaus
Hi Daniel,

That topic has cropped up before (maybe more than once) - search for a thread
called "Lilypond lobbying" in the archive.

I have asked Schott Publishing about that, and here's what they replied (in my
own translation, German original below):

"Basically, we can handle all music file formats that can be converted
to either Finale or Sibelius, which are the main programs we work with.
Those two programs have proved to be most suited for achieving our
engraving style.
It has become standard over the last few years that publishers and
composers deliver their finished scores to us, which doesn't preclude
post-editing in our house. For those cases too, we will ask you for
Finale- or Sibelius-readable files since those are easiest to handle. It
isn't, however a knock-out criterion - in certain cases, we will do
in-house engravings of handwritten manuscripts."

Maybe now would be a good time to demonstrate to publishers what Lilypond has
to offer.

Best, Robert

(or engraving services) using GNU LilyPond, if so which ones?

So far I know there are many composers/musicians on this list who use it,
as well as web services providing an online IDE/editor, what about the
companies/ engraving services?
It seems a lot of them had been focusing on Finale/Sibelius for a long time.

I use ConTEXT (http://www.contexteditor.org/), a freeware
text editor for Windows, for all my text editing, including
LilyPond and LilyPond texinfo files. It has a wide range of
highlighter files, including one for LilyPond. Only a highlighter
for the 2.10 version of LilyPond is available, but this is easily
edited and extended. I've set up function keys to save and
compile the current file, to show the pdf and to play the midi
file. The console output is conveniently captured and displayed
in a separate pane. The main omission is folding. UTF8 support
is minimal, but adequate for an English speaker like me.

i use PSPad or Notepad++ under Windows; i have developed my own user

or otherwise the log (when errors or warnings occur).

i would be happy if there were a performant editor that supports Lilypond
hiliting, folding, executing the different tasks which Lilypond can perform
(like compiling, converting, read midi, xml or other files). and of course i
would appreciate the Lilypond parser do all the checking!

i have also tried out tools on the web (weblily, noteflight and more) but
they all seemed somehow limited.

I am on Mac and built my own editor "LilyEditor" very simple with
syntax highlighting and just one button to invoke lilypond and
update the pdf view.

That's probably beyond my present capabilities, but could you explain
briefly how you achieved a customization like that?

It's not customization, I followed an Objective-C tutorial and built it
from scratch.
FYI, I have not released it in the open because I used lex for the
syntax highlighting and it does not support accents.

On PC, i switch between notepad++ and the ecipse plugin Elysium.

Elysium is also on my list to check out, having touched the surface of
Eclipse (with the Karel program, probably the simplest in the world ;-))

Elysium is good but i miss the ability to just right click and ask to
open a specific file that is not already in the workspace.

It's and Eclipse limitation.

I use Smultron on Mac and gedit on Linux (sometimes other editors) and

I tried jEdit+LilyPondTool, but I hate the looks of jEdit.

GNU/Emacs with LilyPond mode.

Home grown library of templates that I was willing to share but LSR
cannot handle a collection of files.

I have a small script that runs LP in a loop and displays the output
using Evince, with point&click that gets passed to Emacs.

Sibelius scores are converted with Kirill A. Sidorov's sib2ly.

PostScript postprocessing with home grown tools, to add headings and
logos to the output.

MIDI postprocessing with home grown tools to split parts into separate
sound files to excercise with.

Works for me...

So you need an additional tool to write and modify your notes in a
more musical way. And thats Denemo.

Also, ly2musicxml, even though it's difficult to do (and perhaps impossible
to do completely). I sometimes collaborate with a wonderful
composer/arranger who uses Finale. She can send MusicXML to me that I can
convert to LilyPond, but it doesn't work in the other direction.

Also Antwerpen :)

I guess it would be most logical to first start learning Lilypond, using
a 'regular' text editor (nano, gedit, notepad...). Starting with a simple
template and adding the additional elements you need bit by bit, you'll
probably get to know the syntax quite quickly. The documentation is a
real blessing. The extra tools are still *extra*, they don't matter when
it comes to output.

Jethro.

Frescobaldi was the first one I looked at, but asking questions on their
Dutch forum (the developer is Dutch, so it seemed the most logical place)
was in vain; no replies at all.
After that I looked at Denemo, and their forum is very much alive.

To get aquanited with Lilypond syntax I'll start using Gvim as a stepping
stone to vim, I think.
