It's worth pointing out that installing the info docs with images
(running "make info" which is really expensive before running "sudo make
install") is an excellent resource when you are using Emacs as your Info
reader. I don't know any other Info reader supporting images
gracefully, though. The standalone Info reader should still be useful
for finding stuff fast with the search and index lookup commands.

Same here, actually.

I was able to go to the download page (thanks to the cache, I guess)
and download the latest version (hosted on a different server).

HTML is quite clumsier for navigation and indexing. I tend to find
information in Emacs' info reader (mainly using the index, sometimes
using plain text search), then I cut and paste a recognizable sentence
into a web search engine in order find the online variant in order to
refer people to it.

Hi All,

It is a real bummer that the website was down today, because I was
trying to show my guitar student the software. He has a Mac and I am
unfamiliar with how to install Lilypond onto a Mac from Github.

Hope that it gets up and running soon!

Please let me know when it is up so that I may show my student Lilypond.

Thanks,

Well yes if you read the bug trackers.

In a nutshell (and with my limited knowledge) the website is built not
by humans but by machine (so to speak) at least a large chunk is
anyway; so you have to make sure you are not going to break something
when the 'scripts' that build the website no longer find that
directory that 'you' have just moved or the file you have just edited
no longer references a .png and now the whole website is broken.

It isn't just someone poking about with some HTML code in a text
editor - at least from doing documentation for LP that's as I have
come to understand it.

As it says here:

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.15/Documentation/contributor/introduction-to-website-work

'The website is not written directly in HTML; instead, the source is
Texinfo, which is then
generated into HTML, PDF, and Info formats.

As has been said, any help is welcome and there are people on the
lists who can help or advise to those that want to help.

Take a look:

http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/list?can=2q=websitecolspec=IDgroupby=sort=priorityx=typey=prioritycells=tilesmode=grid

Lots to do :)

Thanks for the info. Checking out the bitch and will give it a look.

Old website comes from the web branch, but why would you want it?
New website is discussed in the contributor's guide.

... no.

Given that statement, and the difference in time zones, there's no way
you've read website-work or
  http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=1272
in sufficient detail

Developers, we don't seem to have a Frog Meister at the moment. Is
anybody interested in mentoring Alberto ? We could really use somebody
who is
1) energetic, or at least polite
2) doesn't mind explaining things multiple times (to be fair, language
may be an issue here)
3) ideally knows a bit of build process, shell scripting, maybe python
(I can't remember), and git to interact with both lilypond.git and the
lilypond-extra repository. But #3 is a much less important requirement
than 1 and 2.

I fail at 1 and 2, and I don't want to be responsible for driving a
potential contributor away.

I would offer to fix it, as it should be trivial to rewrite the
index.{whatever} in that folder for a redirect (and do the same for
other folders).

But after this answer, I think you do not want any help, just do not
want people complaining.
