I recommend NOT using the latest version of jEdit (4.3pre12) as I found it didn't play well with LilyPondTool. Go get jEdit 4.3pre9 and I believe you'll be OK. I agree that LilyPondTool is very helpful. Good luck! Tim Reeves___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user
Re: opening Lilypond
LilyPond is not a program like the ones you are used to: you do not have to use your mouse to create a score, but *only* your keyboard! There are no buttons to click on, no menus, nothing. First create a text file with some special code in it; then LilyPond will read it and convert it into a beautiful score. You just have to save your file with the ".ly" extension, and then just double click on it. Then you will see that a PDF file appears next to it. For example, just write: { a b c d } in a file with your notepad. Save your file on your Desktop, as "my_first_score.ly". Then Double-click on it. That's it. If you need some additional help, please, please first read the tutorial -- as Graham told you. Then we'll be ready to help you. Help! I have apparently successfully downloaded Lilypond to my Windows XP PC, but whenever I double click on the desktop icon all I get is the silly "Let's take it for a test drive" window. I'd really like to use your program; and feel silly asking How do I turn the darn thing on? I've tried rebooting the computer; didn't help. -Fencinflyer. ___ lilypond-user mailing list lilypond-user@gnu.org http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-user

Re: need exact pathfilename info for opening lilypond
C. Burton wrote: Which program opens lilypond? What is the exact information that needs to be typed? I need this information for Win98SE. LilyPond isn't an interactive program that you open. You type up a text document in something simple like Notepad, and save it with a .ly extension. I like to save it in c:\cygwin\home\name (where "name" is your username in Cygwin), so you can then open Cygwin (you probably have a shortcut for it on your desktop) and type "lilypond file.ly" where file.ly is your text file. LilyPond will then come into play, and if all goes well, it will produce a .pdf, a .ps, and a .mid file of your music. See the documentation for more details, either online or on your hard drive (mine's at C:\cygwin\usr\share\doc\lilypond-2.2.2\index.html), especially the tutorial. Good luck!
