Re: [LincolnTalk] Electric Radiant Heat Under Bathroom & Mudroom Tiled Floors

2022-01-17 Thread Kathryn Anagnostakis
It is my experience that radiant heat is more than enough to heat a room -
but I like a cool (ish) room with a warm floor. I don't want my rooms to
be 70 in the winter - that's too hot for me. So if the radiant keeps the
room about 65 but the floor is warm all the time I am happy.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Just how much real danger does sodium in our drinking water present?

2022-01-17 Thread Corey Nimmer
I’m not sure how much of a concern the salt is for drinking water, and your
conclusions here appeal to common sense. I’d also imagine a basic water filter
would remove a fair amount of sodium.

With regards to the wildlife impact of road salt, it is pretty thoroughly
documented in peer reviewed studies that runoff salt has a negative impact on
freshwater wetland ecosystems. This article is a literature review published in
Science of the Total Environment this year:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34536879/

Basically excessive levels of chloride can decrease plant and animal
biodiversity while increasing the growth of phytoplankton, which can accelerate
eutrophication in a similar way to runoff nitrogen fertilizer.

Lincoln has a high concentration of wetlands, especially vernal pools, which
are critical breeding grounds for amphibians, some of which are endangered such
as the blue spotted salamander. It’s a subjective opinion, but I feel like
amphibians are essential pieces of Lincoln’s character and story. I hope there
doesn’t come a day when the air isn’t filled with the sound of spring peepers
and wood frogs on warm rainy nights. Not sure if the data exists, but I’d be
interested to know if/how the health of our wetlands has changed in recent
years.

All that being said, I agree that safety and avoiding auto accidents should be
paramount. I don’t have access to the full article above but it looks like
alternative formulations/chemicals aren’t much better for wetlands, so an
engineering-based approach is necessary to determine a salt application plan
that optimizes safety while minimizing environmental impact. Chloride levels
would have to be tested, critical habitat identified, accident data analyzed,
and alternative application techniques explored in order to formulate a plan
with the goal to apply enough salt to prevent ice formation while having the
lowest possible amount of runoff into certain areas. Like any initiative this
would require time, money, and support from residents, so I’m not holding my
breath, but I think it’s worth considering, especially if data shows that our
wetland ecosystems are in decline.

[LincolnTalk] Lee for Board of Water Commissioners

2022-01-17 Thread Jason S. Lee

Hello Lincoln neighbors!

My name is Jason Lee and I have lived in Lincoln for one year with my 14 year
old twins. I love the town and would like to volunteer my time, skills, and
abilities to keep it a great place for all residents.

Thus, I am asking you to vote for me to fill the open position on the Board of
Water Commissioners. As you may know, Commissioner Jim Hutchinson has
announced he is resigning his seat to run for the Select Board, and
Commissioner Ruth Ann Hendrickson's term is almost complete and she is running
to fill Jim’s remaining 2 years. That leaves a 3 year term empty and it needs
to be filled.

It has been my pleasure to meet with Jim, Ruth Ann, and Commissioner Michelle
Barnes to assess the job; I have also attended the last two Board meetings and
read minutes from prior meetings. I believe the mission of the Board is
important and that I can fill the open seat very well.

As you know, the governing functions of the Town are performed by volunteers.
I am willing to volunteer to be a Water Commissioner, and that is perhaps my
most important qualification for the job. Other assets I bring to the task are:

PhD in social psychology from University of Michigan (to give me insight into
the social dynamics that are part of any group).
A decade working as a researcher and counsel for the US Congress in Washington
DC (back when there was a little more willingness to reach across the aisle for
the common good).
Senior member of teams that determined and managed funding of health care
research supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Assistant
Secretary for Planning and Evaluation of the Department of Health and Human
Services (should help with a significant part of the role, which entails making
decisions about scoping and awarding grants and evaluating grantees’
performance, to help accomplish mission-driven work).
Currently direct a Forum of individuals from diverse healthcare companies to
develop standards for a global hospital enterprise architecture (plays well in
groups).

Thank you for your vote! I hope we have a chance to say hello some day,

Jason Lee--

Re: [LincolnTalk] Library has an induction cooktop

2022-01-17 Thread Rich Rosenbaum
I would point out that portable induction cooktops draw much less power
than a built-in cooktop can so I would suggest that if you borrow it for a
test drive you should know that an actual cooktop will heat pots and pans
much faster than a portable.

Even so, you can evaluate induction's other great features as outlined by
Trish and Belinda. I'll add one more:

   - Repeatable settings: a setting of, say, "5" will always be the same.
We use this 'feature' every time we use our pressure cooker - after coming
up to pressure, setting the cooktop to '3' will always maintain it
perfectly. No fiddling with a gas control.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Just how much real danger does sodium in our drinking water present?

2022-01-17 Thread Dennis Liu
Corey, thanks for sharing that. I took a look at the article you cited, but,
like you, I don't have access to the full article. Just reading the abstract
does inform me that the primary risk that they were studying is from chloride,
rather than sodium. The abstract describes what they studied, but provides
zero information on the practical effects. Maybe the full article does. As it
stands, however, this cited abstract is, unfortunately, not helpful in
providing answers to the questions we have:

1. Does the amount of salt that Lincoln uses actually cause meaningful
increases in high chloride concentrations in groundwater and surface water?
2. If so, then does that higher Cl or NaCl level actually cause the
warned-about effects, namely on the abiotic processes and biotic response to
chloride exposure? Does this mean that Lincoln is actually seeing, or likely
to see, after decades of salting roads, a material change in our current
ecosystem due to the warned-about possibilities?

Definitely curious about this aspect of the problem too. Bottom line, since
Lincoln (and all other municipalities) has been salting roads for decades, I'm
definitely eager to learn why this might cause substantial changes to our local
ecology now -- if the spring peepers and wood frogs on Lexington road that both
Corey and I enjoy hearing haven't been affected, AFAIK, over the last 40-50
years, how would things change now?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: [LincolnTalk] Just how much real danger does sodium in our
drinking water present?
