[LincolnTalk] Library elevator out of operation all day Monday, 3/27

2023-03-25 Thread Kate Tranquada
The bad news: the library elevator is scheduled for maintenance on Monday,
and will be unavailable for public use.

The good news is that when the work is done, we're told the elevator doors
will no longer close on anyone or anything that doesn't get on or off
quickly enough!

[LincolnTalk] Jake Lehrhoff for School Commitee

2023-03-25 Thread Jake Lehrhoff
Hi Lincoln neighbors,

Over the past month I’ve met so many of you to discuss what matters to you
about our school community and so you can learn more about me. I was
disappointed that a work trip conflicted with the PTO forum, but am
thankful that I’ve been able to grow so many new relationships through this
election process.

In one forum, I met a group of former educators interested in how we
support our teachers. As a former teacher myself, with six years of
experience as a middle school English teacher at the Gifford School in
Weston, it’s a topic that’s near and dear to me. I’ve seen first-hand that
for students to thrive, teachers need to be given the tools for success.
The pandemic has driven widespread teacher burnout and has resulted in
delayed progress among students in the United States and beyond. As a
member of the school committee, I’d want data about both sides of this
topic: I’d ensure the administration is systematically deepening their
understanding of what our teachers need to succeed and what stands in their
way, and I’d look broadly across a variety of student performance measures
to understand if and how the administration may need to adjust instruction
to meet the needs all of our learners. What I wouldn’t do is propose
solutions in search of problems.

I met another group passionate about Lincoln’s AIDE work and METCO program.
At the PTO forum, there was a question about how each candidate would
improve METCO. I see the program as a critical thread in the fabric of our
schools and we should be proud that we so actively work to increase the
diversity of our community. What I don’t know, candidly, is how to improve
the program in Lincoln. Instead, I’d want to hear from the experts: the
students and families in the program.

I’d like to close by sharing something I said to Lincoln’s very own 8th
grade class who is learning civics while developing their own opinions
about what makes a good School Committee candidate:

If I made a full career out of teaching, I don’t think I would consider
running. And if I was always working in research and product development at
a tech company, I also don’t think I’d consider running. But between the
two experiences I think I have two critical ingredients:

   -

I understand the reality of working in a school across a variety of needs
   -

And I know how thoughtful research and strong communication can drive
decisions among a group of leaders

And those two experiences have one throughline: it’s through relationships,
listening, and empathy that you get things done and can make things better.
And that’s what I want to do.

Thank you for considering me for this important role. I hope I’ve earned
your vote in Monday’s election.

Jake Lehrhoff

Is there such a site? If so, will someone respond?

[LincolnTalk] Matina Madrick for School Committee

2023-03-25 Thread Matina Madrick
Dear Lincoln Talk readers,

I am writing to you one last time as a Candidate for Lincoln School Committee
(K-8). Over these last few weeks, it has been a great pleasure to meet so many
Lincoln residents at various events- in people’s homes, at the dump, running
errands, and at the PTO Candidate Forum.

I am running for Lincoln School Committee because I love education policy and
the work that the School Committee does. I have a longstanding interest in
education policy and I have work experience in education budget policy. But
most of all, I am excited to serve the community as a member of the School
Committee. I am dedicated to our schools and I want the best possible outcomes
for all of our students.

As a member of the School Committee I would like to work on some of the
following priorities:

Establishing a budget subcommittee of the SC, similar to the Lincoln-Sudbury
School budget subcommittee. A subcommittee, made up of members of the School
Committee, school administrators, and potentially town residents could spend
more time looking at the details of the school budget and provide more
transparency for Lincoln residents.

Supporting our educators through competitive compensation, increased PD
opportunities, and access to mental health services as we emerge from the
pandemic. When my family and I moved to Lincoln during COVID we felt so lucky
that our elementary and middle school children could attend school every day.
We also realized that without the teachers’ willingness, LPS could not have
opened. In preparation for the recent LEA contract negotiations, the SC
analyzed surrounding communities’ teacher compensation to ensure that Lincoln
is competitive. I would propose the SC continue to update this analysis every
year, and look to other ways to attract and retain a diverse and talented
workforce.

Supporting the district’s important AIDE work. In the survey designed to
assess the community’s priorities for the selection of the new Superintendent,
the number one priority for residents and educators was that the new
superintendent continue the district’s AIDE work. The SC must continue to
support the schools as they work to address inequities and foster inclusion in
our education system.

Emphasizing the importance of high expectations for student achievement -
especially in middle school. Over the past several weeks I have heard a lot of
discussion about whether or not our middle schoolers are prepared for high
school. There are many different opinions on this topic and more information
is needed. The SC needs to work with Lincoln-Sudbury to collect information so
that our schools know how to best prepare 8th graders for their next
educational step.

Thank you for the opportunity to run for School Committee and to share my
thoughts with you. I hope you will consider voting for me on Monday.

Karen,

Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately, I had to leave town yesterday
for my daughters graduation in Philadelphia so could not attend.

Lynne was a good one with a sweet soul. She will be missed and sadly Bruce
is without his soulmate.
