[LincolnTalk] FELS Thanksgiving Pie Sale

2024-11-04 Thread Nancy Marshall
The FELS Annual Thanksgiving Pie Sale is at the halfway mark! Pie
quantities are limited. Complete your Thanksgiving table with a FELS Pie,
and take the opportunity to consider a pie donation to benefit our local
Food Pantries, LSRHS Staff and Faculty and our Public Safety personnel.

Delicious pies from Ruth-Anne Adams and Tom Fosnot of The Hyve can be
ordered via www.FELSGrant.org through Friday November 15.

Proceeds from the sale will fund grants for teachers and staff at
Lincoln-Sudbury.

FELS was founded in 2000 to offer parents a tangible way to show their
appreciation to the L-S professional staff for the unflagging dedication,
tireless effort, and genuine caring they routinely offer our children. Our
guiding principle is “Inspired Teachers Inspire Students.”

Thank you!

[LincolnTalk] Three questions

2024-10-23 Thread Nancy Marshall
We have failed seals in a few windows, and of course the "architectural"
window company we used via our builder went out of business. Looking for
recommendations on reliable, reasonably seamless companies to call for
replacements.

Also considering solar and wondering what folks' experiences have been with
SunRun in particular, who is preparing a proposal, as well as any other
companies neighbors have had recent and positive experiences with.

Third, for Sara Mattes, who is your appliance company you always recommend?

Thanks!

[LincolnTalk] Thank you from FELS

2023-12-05 Thread Nancy Marshall
The Board of FELS, the Foundation for Educators at Lincoln-Sudbury,
www.FELSGrant.org would like to thank everyone who made our Thanksgiving
Pie sale an enormous success this year.

Ruth-Anne Adams and Tom Fosnot of The Hyve, who made each pie from scratch,
along with many helping hands from our Board and the MLK Action Project
student volunteers, we all came together to distribute pies to many
Thanksgiving tables in our towns.

This year, we doubled the number of pies sold in 2022. Thanks to many
generous people, by the numbers we delivered gifts to:

~ LS Teachers and Staff, 29 gifted and 6 raffled pies

~ the Sudbury Food Pantry, 31 pies

~ Sudbury Fire and Police, 11 pies

~ Lincoln Fire and Police, 9 pies

We had numerous calls and emails about the pies and gratitude from those
receiving donated or gifted pies.

The FELS annual appeal continues through the end of the year and we
encourage you to visit our website and please consider a donation. Every
dollar counts and from those donations we can fund opportunities for our
teachers and staff to pursue their personal dreams and passions. Our
motto, *Inspired Teachers Inspire Students*, is not just aspirational. We
hear time and time again what a difference the opportunities we fund make
in the professional lives of LSRHS faculty and staff.

FELS will meet again in January to hear from some of 2023’s grant
recipients and plan for 2024’s grant cycle. Our meetings are posted on our
website and are open to the public.

With thanks and best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season

[LincolnTalk] Violin for 9th grader

I was going to suggest Paul at Spencer Brook Strings. We bought a violin

instrumental Angels collects violins and other instruments for donation:

The drop down menu under "Play Your Part" has "Instrument Requests". I'd
give them a try. One of their sponsors is Spencer Brook Strings, and they
might have some information if you can't get through to Instrumental
Angels. Paul at Spencer Brook fixes up donated violins for that group.

[LincolnTalk] Knife Handle question

2023-03-30 Thread Nancy Marshall
I have a beloved kitchen knife whose handle for some reason is degrading
and is about to expire. I love the weight of the handle and the balance it
offers the blade and have been keeping it intact with a lot of rubber bands.

I am in search of someone who might be able to fabricate a new handle,
possibly upcycling parts of the handle that remain intact.

Any suggestions please email me directly.

Thank you,

[LincolnTalk] FELS Pie Sale Distribution

2022-11-21 Thread Nancy Marshall
A big thank you to the Lincoln and Sudbury Communities for their support of
our revived FELS Thanksgiving Pie Sale. We sold over 100 pies and had a
generous portion of them, almost half, given as donations to both towns'
Food Pantries and to the Police and Fire departments. Ruth-Anne and Tom of
The Hyve have been very busy preparing the pies and you won't be
disappointed! We at FELS are VERY THANKFUL for their culinary support and
of course for those who purchased a pie or two or three!!

Patrons who ordered pies for their own Thanksgiving tables should plan to
pick them up tomorrow, Tuesday, November 22, at the location they
requested, either at Lincoln-Sudbury, just inside the left front door near
the entrance to the auditorium, or at the Lincoln Council on Aging. *Hours
are 3-6pm.* Please be prompt, as pies will not be available after 6pm.

[LincolnTalk] Foundation for Educators at Lincoln-Sudbury

2022-05-12 Thread Nancy Marshall
The Foundation for Educators at Lincoln-Sudbury, or FELS (www.FELSGrant.org),
is a non-profit founded in the early 2000's by Lincolnite and then-LSRHS
parent Peter von Mertens, to support teachers and staff at Lincoln-Sudbury
in pursuing their personal passions and interests. We provide grants that
fully or partially fund a wide array of opportunities that include travel,
education, refreshment and enrichment, locally and well beyond.

Our mission intentionally does not tie our grant funding to the applicant's
individual profession within LSRHS. Our motto, *Inspired Teachers Inspire
Students, *pretty much says it all.

We are seeking new members for our Board. We welcome parents of middle
schoolers, current LSRHS parents, and parents of LSRHS alumni. We meet 7-8
times each year. Serving on the FELS Board provides a unique lens into
Lincoln-Sudbury. It offers an opportunity to know grant recipients more
deeply than day-to-day encounters as a parent and allows one to really
understand the positive value of what our grants provide, both to the
applicant and more broadly to the student experience at Lincoln-Sudbury.

Interested individuals are welcome to visit our website, www.FELSGrant.org

[LincolnTalk] Cara Endyke-Doran for Lincoln-Sudbury School Committee

2022-03-20 Thread Nancy Marshall
I write this letter today as a private citizen. This year’s race for
Lincoln-Sudbury Regional School Committee is contested, with three
candidates, including Cara Endyke-Doran, the current Chair, running for one
of the two open positions. Lincoln’s vote for Cara this year is *extremely
critical* in ensuring a balance of views on the Committee, long-lens
institutional perspective in School Committee deliberations, thoughtful
discussions regarding the Regional Agreement and a focus on how Lincoln and
Sudbury can best support our regional high school. I hope residents had a
chance to attend the Candidates Forum this past Wednesday or are able to
view it online. Please also and remember to vote on Monday, March 28 in
the Reed (Brooks) gym at Lincoln School.

I am formally endorsing Cara Endyke-Doran for re-election to the
Lincoln-Sudbury Regional School Committee. Cara has worked in the
international public health sector for many years; she has a dual Masters
in Public Health and Nursing. She is also the parent of four children, two
of whom have graduated from LSRHS and two who are students there. Cara
has leaned into both her professional credentials and her own parenting
experiences throughout the COVID pandemic. Her calm and attentive
leadership has shepherded the LSSC and the District through these last two
years with grounded information and clear communication to constituents.
Cara’s hard work and commitment have helped LSRHS to continue educating our
high schoolers, to support more acute social and emotional needs arising
from the pandemic and to keep students and staff as protected from the
virus as possible. Cara led the COVID-19 testing sub-committee at the
onset of the pandemic during her very first year on the Committee. Through
her strong advocacy, LS was one of the first schools in the State to offer
COVID-19 testing to all its students and staff.

The School Committee has accomplished a great deal over the past three
years, hiring an excellent Director of Finance and Operations in Kirsteen
Patterson, reviewing and revising the complete School Committee policy
manual, and considering new and amended LSRHS curricula in an increasingly
global and mindful context. This year, the School Committee successfully
negotiated a new three-year collective bargaining agreement that considers
well what is fair in the context of annual budgeting alongside.the talents
of our terrific LSRHS faculty and staff. In this late/post-COVID
environment, where teachers and school administrators across the US are
leaving their jobs, permanently, in droves, striking a relational and
equitable balance and reinforcing the quality of teaching and commitment of
time to our students, all of this is vital.

And there is always more to do. Cara’s continued, committed leadership,
given her initiative and accrued understanding of process and knowledge of
School Committee governance, will be an asset for both towns.

Cara is committed to Lincoln-Sudbury and has ensured the Committee is
operating in the best interest of our students, staff, parents and broader
communities. She has respectfully listened and taken into account the
sometimes widely differing perspectives from the three communities of
Lincoln, Sudbury, and Boston, as well as our commonalities, how we
understand and appreciate LSRHS day-to-day.

[LincolnTalk] Voter Registration for March 28 Town Elections

2022-02-17 Thread Nancy Marshall
New residents and/or newly eligible voters in Lincoln can register to vote
via a variety of ways in time for our Town elections in late March. The
polls are open for in person voting on Monday March 28, two days after
Annual Town Meeting on March 26.

There are a number of contested races for our town government and school
committees. Residents can review the various ways to register and to vote
via absentee ballot here -

https://www.lincolntown.org/157/Voter-Registration-Information

And here - https://www.lincolntown.org/155/Absentee-Voting

New voters must be registered in Lincoln at least 20 days prior to an
election to be eligible to cast a ballot. There will also be a voter
registration opportunity for students at LSRHS.

There will be a candidate forum held in Sudbury by the Sudbury League of
Women Voters that will allow voters in both towns to hear the three
candidates for two seats on the LS School Committee. It will be recorded
on Feb 27 and 28 and be available for streamed viewing on Sudbury TV
shortly thereafter as well as on the Sudbury cable access channels (Comcast
8&9 and Verizon 31 & 32). Website for access is here:

https://www.sudburytv.org/how-to-watch.html

All electoral races in Sudbury will be included, so hopefully the event
will be indexed to allow simple access to the LS portion of the forum.

[LincolnTalk] Judy Glassman

2022-01-02 Thread Nancy Marshall
I am saddened to pass along that former Lincoln School Assistant Principal
and later Middle School Principal Judy Glassman passed away on New Year’s
Eve. Judy had a lengthy battle with dementia for the last five or so
years.

Local lore that continues (most recently in text exchanges this morning)
include stories about Judy’s “click-click-clicking” heels as she quickly
made her way to points in the school building. She also hung a
substantial, pink, fuzzy bathrobe on a hook in her office to provide visual
encouragement to students to “choose well” what to wear to school. Judy
was an avid runner and continued her commitment to education at Lesley,
mentoring and evaluating teaching students in their practicum work well
after leaving Lincoln.

I have very fond memories and a great appreciation for Judy. We remained
friends long after we finished at Lincoln School and Judy retired. Our
mutual love for Cape Cod and our summers there gave us more times and
places to gather.

Arrangements will be in the Globe today or tomorrow, services will be at
noon at Stanetsky’s in Canton on Tuesday.

If anyone would like to be in touch with Judy’s husband Mitch, just shoot
me an email privately please.

[LincolnTalk] FELS Thanksgiving Pie Sale

2021-11-19 Thread Nancy Marshall
As we come close to Thanksgiving, FELS, the Foundation for Educators at
LSRHS, would like to thank the communities of Lincoln and Sudbury for their
ongoing support for more than 20 years. This year we were unable to offer
our pie sale due to supply chain issues from our baker that could not be
resolved to ensure a guaranteed pie for your Thanksgiving table. Our pie
sale, along with our annual appeal, are the two main sources of FELS grant
funding to faculty and staff at LSRHS. Thus, as it was last year, our
annual appeal is more important than ever.

FELS, the Foundation for Educators at LSRHS, is a non-profit organization
that awards enrichment grants to Lincoln-Sudbury High School faculty and
staff to pursue their professional and personal interests and passions.
FELS was founded in 2000 to offer donors a tangible way to show their
appreciation to the L-S professional staff for the unflagging dedication,
tireless effort, and genuine caring they routinely offer our children. Our
guiding principle is “Inspired Teachers Inspire Students.”

In this season of giving, please consider a donation to FELS. Your
donation can be designated in honor of a teacher or staff member who has
had a positive impact on your child. Ways to give can be found on our
website, www.FELSGrant.org.

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving,

Nancy Marshall,

Please make sure to bag or box your items with your name and phone number
clearly labeled.

And come join us November 20 & 21 for our *Festival of Greens*! Our Holiday
Greens have arrived, the shop is filled to the brim with beautiful things
for your Holiday decorating and entertaining and there are many live items
in the greenhouse for gifting and decorating. We have wreaths, garlands,

[LincolnTalk] Coffee maker suggestions

2021-10-03 Thread Nancy Marshall
Single cup pour over, paper filter or Chemex for multiple cups. Get a good
burr grinder and read up a bit on optimal weight of coffee and water
temperatures if you want the deep dive.

Better by a long shot for the environment than a Keurig, great compost for
roses and tomatoes, and a fresh cup(s) every single time. Yes you have to
boil a kettle but the convenience factor is still quite reasonable.

[LincolnTalk] Another Appliance repair suggestion

2021-08-21 Thread Nancy Marshall
Just as a heads’ up, American Appliance in Waltham was 2-3 weeks out on
availability for house calls, emergent or otherwise, thanks in part I am
sure to Sara Mattes’ endorsements!

Just as an alternative suggestion, Same Day Appliance in Woburn has been
terrific for us, and they were 2-3 days out, but they always do an
extensive telephone discussion before dispatch, and both times I have
called they have walked me through what to do and I’ve been able to sort
things without a house call. They are kind and patient and I am sure they
lose money on these calls, but it has worked out in maintaining our ancient
appliances.
