[LincolnTalk] Traffic

2024-07-16 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi Everyone-

Who is the right person or organization in town to contact about traffic
issues? We live on 177 (busy busy road) near tower and for the second time
this year someone has crashed into the pilons guarding the sidewalk near my
driveway entrance. That’s where my kids wait for the school bus. They left
their entire bumper.

I realize I live on perhaps the busiest road in town but I wanted to
inquire if there are any options whatsoever for slowing down traffic this
curve. It’s a long shot I know.

Thanks in advance

[LincolnTalk] What am I doing wrong with my hummingbird feeder?

2024-05-06 Thread Rob Haslinger
So a week ago I hung up a hummingbird feeder. I’ve seen three of the little
guys come and check it out and then fly away without drinking. So I must be
doing something wrong. I did 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. I’ve also been
changing it out so I don’t think the nectar has gone bad.

Anyone have any tips or tricks?

Re: [LincolnTalk] Many more than 640 units may be developed. An explanation

2023-11-07 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi Ben and others -

Thanks for digging into the details of how the state compliance model
works. I'm a Data Scientist by profession so the video seemed clear to me
after a few viewings, but I'm still drinking my coffee and not firing on
cylinders yet so I wanted to sanity check my understanding.

As I understand you, the crux of the problem is that the state model for
calculating compliant units can not be used to accurately estimate the
number of units that could by right be built on parcels that include
wetlands. This stems from two factors:

 1) The state model underestimates buildable area because it removes 20% of
the area for "free space" before subtracting off the wetlands, rather than
after subtracting wetlands (as seems more reasonable). This lowers the
number of compliant units we get per parcel, which means we need more
parcels to comply.
2) The actual number of units a developer can legally build on a parcel has
nothing to do with the number of compliant units, but instead is simply the
total parcel area (including wetlands) multiplied by the zoned density
which under the HCA must be 15 units per acre.

The upshot then is that if we include parcels with wetlands, the number of
units that can be built by right may be many more than the number of
compliant units. The number of compliant units is therefore extremely
misleading for estimating how many units might be built by right.

Do I correctly understand your points or have I missed something?

Thanks again for the effort you put into digging in and explaining the
details to us all.

Cheers

Re: [LincolnTalk] Longtime Gas Leak on Sandy Pond Road

2023-10-31 Thread Rob Haslinger
As Andrew says, there's a prioritization process and they are very, very
backed up. When we lived in Arlington there was a terrible leak under our
street that all the neighbors could smell. We called National Grid and they
did send someone out to look. He was very honest with us and explained that
the only way a crew would be sent out in any reasonable time frame was if
the leak was within 10 (or close to that) feet of a house or manhole.

In our case it turned out the leak was in the main right under the manhole,
so a crew arrived within 30 minutes. It was indeed quite the process of
ripping up the street and fixing it.

2023-08-26 Thread Rob Haslinger
It was the begging call of a juvenile barred owl. Here’s a recording

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zh-XSglkR8

It was freaking out my kids because it was right outside their bedroom
window and I was totally confused because I didn’t realize the juveniles
made that call. The closest thing I could think of was a screech owl but
that wasn’t it.

Thanks to everyone who replied! My kids are no longer freaked out!

Cheers Rob

[LincolnTalk] What is this bird call

2023-08-25 Thread Rob Haslinger
Ive got some bird calling outside my house every night in the past weeks.
It sounds like an ascending raspy slide whistle. I would have thought
screech owl but it doesn’t sound quite right and I thought their call was
descending?

Any thoughts? Thx Rob

[LincolnTalk] Raptor rescue?

2023-08-16 Thread Rob Haslinger
Is there an organization around here that does raptor rescue? We were
walking along south great road by Hannan farms and a young red tail sitting
on a fence post took off and immediately took a header into the road. I
shooed it back to the side. Looks like a broken wing. Last I saw it it was
settling down for the evening on the porch railing of 280 south great rd.

I’m assuming by the time this gets posted and morning rolls around nature
will likely have taken it’s course … on the chance it hasn’t, is there any
organization that rescues hurt raptors?

Thx Rob

Re: [LincolnTalk] Lincoln Green Energy Choice

2023-08-10 Thread Rob Haslinger
You can go to this MA govt page and compare rates of different suppliers.

https://www.energyswitchma.gov/#/

It’s pretty easy to compare and change with a few clicks. You do have to
check the terms, that there no early cancel fees and also be mindful to
check that your rate won’t go up after the intro period. It likely will
since I believe most of these suppliers suck you in with a low into rate
and hope you forget to check at the end of the initial contract period. But
you can change as often as you want as long as your contract doesn’t have
an early cancellation fee. You just have to stay on top of this.

Before July the base eversource rate in Lincoln was 26c/kWh which is pretty
egregious but it dropped to 16 in July. They change the base rate Jan and
July.

Good luck
Rob

[LincolnTalk] Violin teacher for adult

2023-07-23 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi I’m looking for a violin teacher for myself. I played very seriously for
about 25 years and then burned out and have only played occasionally for
the last 20. The skill is still there but I’m very very rusty.

Anyone have suggestions for a local teacher who might be able to get me
back up to speed? If they have any experience with bluegrass fiddle that
would be a significant plus but right now I just need a bit of a kick to
get playing again.

Thanks!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Tick treatment - yard

2023-05-19 Thread Rob Haslinger
Ditto. I’m also looking for a tick spraying service and would appreciate
any suggestions.

As for dealing with ticks and a small child, long sleeves, a hat and tick
spray containing Picardin help but nightly tick checks are also a must.
Fine tweezers gentle pulling and then ice cream to deal with the tears

[LincolnTalk] Piano lessons?

2023-05-17 Thread Rob Haslinger
Hi Everyone

We just moved to Lincoln and are looking for a local piano teacher for our
8 year old. She’s a relative beginner with about 8 months of Suzuki book
one under her belt. Any recommendations are most appreciated .. our current
teacher is great but going back and forth to the city is already becoming
wearisome.

Thanks in advance!
