on last thing. how do you create a program that checks the version of your systems 
quicktime and director components?

For QuickTime, the quickTimeVersion() is the command you want. As far 
as Director components goes -- well, either you're distributing a new 
projector and so everything there is already update, or you are doing 
it via Shockwave, which is usually capable of checking with 
Macromedia on its own for updates.
