[linux] looking for feedback on whether i'm designing a course the wrong way

2019-03-30 Thread Robert P. J. Day

i will apologize in advance if this comes across as marketing, since
i legitimately want this group's opinion on whether i'm taking the
wrong approach in designing a course on container technology.

lately, since i live on fedora linux, i've been messing with their
container management commands "podman" and "buildah" for,
respectively, running and building container images. there is a
powerful equivalence between these two tools and the corresponding
docker commands:

  podman == docker
  buildah == docker build

in fact, the correspondence is so perfect that many people simply
install both and:

  $ alias docker=podman

you can see the equivalence here:

https://github.com/containers/libpod/blob/master/transfer.md
https://developers.redhat.com/blog/2019/02/21/podman-and-buildah-for-docker-users/

and here's my problem.

i prefer the podman and buildah tools -- they have some features
that docker lacks but, other than that, they are literally drop-in
replacements. so one can teach a container course just as
appropriately using these tools (podman, buildah, skopeo) as using
docker.

but will people understand that? all of the folks i've talked to
insist that, when clients call up looking for container training, they
almost always ask, "do you teach docker?", not realizing there are
more container solutions than just that. so even if the technology i'm
presenting will work just as well (same underlying container runtime
engines and so on), will potential clients simply say, "sorry, we're
looking for docker training, thanks."

open to thoughts. from the perspective of marketing, it does no good
to say, "my stuff is just as good if not better" if the client says,
"sorry, we want docker."

p.s. in exchange for opinions, i'm currently writing up all sorts of
container stuff here:

http://crashcourse.ca/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=containers_on_fedora_30

related to containers specifically on (upcoming) fedora 30 if people
want to read it. it's all publicly available, so help yourself.

Re: [linux] looking for feedback on whether i'm designing a course the wrong way

2019-03-30 Thread James Lockie

I think my company looked at using a 3rd party docker solution.
So maybe the demand for docker for some companies is that they are
outsourcing it to a company that only offers docker. I was not involved
technically.

I think my company ended up doing everything in house. :-)

i'd be interested in what that "3rd party solution" was if you can
remember it.

Re: [linux] PROXIES and other AGM matters

2019-03-30 Thread Brett Delmage
First, thanks to the OCLUG board who served this past year, and
for multiple terms..

We've always made quorum, but it has been close sometimes.
The consequences of quorum failure are costly.

Hi John,

I don't know the directors. Perhaps others don't either,
therefore they might not care about the election and annual meeting.

Could candidate statements be posted on the wiki and/or on this list?

Like:
Who are you?
Why do you want to run for the board?
Where do you see OCLUG going in the next year? What do you want to
accomplish?

It's unlikely that I'd fill out a proxy for people I don't know.

Does the board present a report at the annual meeting?

I think interest might be elevated with a slightly higher profile AGM and
election process.

cheers,

Brett

[linux] Repeat: Reminder of the 2019 AGM

2019-03-30 Thread Scott Murphy
REMINDER REMINDER REMINDER REMINDER REMINDER REMINDER REMINDER
-
The April talk announcement will go out this weekend in a separate
mailing. This announcement is being sent to ensure we get sufficient
members or proxies to have our AGM. This message will be repeated a
couple of days prior to the AGM.
-

The April meeting starts with our AGM as required by the corporation
bylaws.

At present, we have the following candidates for the board:
- Bruce Davis
- Ian Gorman
- Ed Hong
- Scott Murphy
- John Nash
- Tug Williams

If anyone else is interested in being on the board, feel free to self-
nominate no later than April 2nd, 2019. If several people are willing to
come on board, a few of us are willing to withdraw our intent in order to
get some new blood in. Just so everyone is aware, four board members is
sufficient, six would be better in case of circumstances requiring an
existing member to step down.

In addition, according to the bylaws of the non-profit corporation, we
require at least 20 members people to be present, either in person or via
proxy. We will have a sign-up sheet for the election and will require all
present to sign in order to prove the election was held in compliance with
the bylaws. If we do not have the requisite number of people/proxies, we
are required to repeat this at every future meeting until we do meet the
criteria. If you are not going to be there, please register a proxy. To
meet the member criteria, our official member roster is this mailing list.

Proxies can be registered by sending an email to either John Nash (john dot
nash at uottawa dot ca) or Scott Murphy (scott dot murphy at arrow dash eye
dot com) prior to 17:00 on Wednesday, April 3rd or that we have a record
prior to the election. The email should be in the form of the example in the
bylaws, replicated below:
