Re: current Linux distribution

2002-09-03 Thread Jason W. Strnad

And if you really can't bring yourself to install a linux instance to
dual boot, (I understand it is sometimes a PITA), I'd suggest again you
consider using cygwin. Cygwin will allow you to use, among other
things, wget and md5sum, tools which windows doesn't offer much
competition for in my experience. All windows bashing aside,
windows+cygwin > windows alone.

Re: Applying a Patch

2002-09-03 Thread Post, Mark K

Lionel,

Try using "-p1" instead of "-p0". Patch tries to take the complete path and
filename in the patch file to find the file to be patched. In your case,
that is linux-2.4.7/Documentation/s390/chandev.8. Since you're in the
linux-2.4.7.SuSE directory, it's unlikely there's a linux-2.4.7 subdirectory
there. Specifying "-p1" will cause patch to discard the linux-2.4.7 part
and start looking in ./Documentation.

I doubt whether anyone can really answer you definitively.

Most likely as someone else has said, you can delete
a certain amount of stuff and still install okay. I know I
can with Red Hat using Anaconda.

If you can use a second VM machine, then I suggest you
download the filesystem to your existing Linux/390 system
where you should be able to install via NFS, FTP or HTTP.
You will also benefit from getting a filesystem that has
not been stuffed around. I've no idea whether the CDs
you might create on W98 are actually usable. It's entirely
possible that the installer will _require_ some actual
symlinks, _not_ duplicated files.

Should you download the files to your existing L/390
system, then you can indeed make usable CDs, but in the
case of Red Hat Linux, the installer knows which CD each
file is on. Getting its list in order is quite simple
when you know how, but there's little chance of doing that
on W98.

Installing Linux on your home machine is not an entirely
silly thing to do. I've seen the beta of Red Hat 8.0, and
I reckon those who _can_ do all their work on Linux will
not regret it if they make the move. I expect the new
releases of the others will be similarly good.

If replacing W98 isn't possible, scrounge a usable disk drive
from anywhere you can. Depending on package selections
you could require as much as 2 Gbytes for RHL 7.3.

Re: current Linux distribution

2002-09-03 Thread Post, Mark K

Shimon,

If you've got a Windows machine at home, I would recommend installing an
Intel Linux distribution on it in "dual boot" mode. (SuSE, since that seems
to be the S/390 version you want to use.) Then, when you download your
files, the symlinks will just be symlinks and not take up large amounts of
disk space.

If you don't want that kind of an adventure, I would say that you could
leave out the entire KDE package, which would include the k2de1, k2de2 and
k2de3 directories. You could probably not include xdev1 and xdev2.
Likewise e1 and e2, unless you're an Emacs fan(atic).

Or, if you ask nicely, maybe someone with a broadband connected Linux system
with a CD burner will download and burn them for you. :) A snail mail
address would be of help in that regard.

Mark, this looks like it assumes my downloading is done
on a linux machine, which (unfortunately?) is not the case.
I have been using WS-FTP on W98 (at home!) to download all
of the /cd1 directory from the SuSE sles beta site, and I am
almost finished it (still using non broadband modems).

Something that is disturbing is that there seem to be
large areas of the tree which are apparently just links
to files in other areas, but I am getting them duplicated
in my download. I already have far more than 650MB,
and am getting worried that a 700MB CD will also not
be enough.

Are there any tips available regarding how to build a SuSE
CDROM on a Windows system? Are there recommended
areas in the tree to 'prune' in order to save space? This is
another reason why I am sorry there is no ISO format,
although I do understand what seem to be SuSE's marketing
concerns.

Thank you all for your help, it is always encouraging
knowing there are experts willing to help out!

Well, I know what you do different from me ;-)

You're in the /usr/src/linux-2.4.7 directory, and the patch refers to
files called linux-2.4.7/Documentation... so there is overlap in the
path. If the two linux-2.4.7* directories are equal you can go down
one directory and patch from there, but in most cases you will find
that the person who ran diff was using some other directory name that
does not match yours.

So this is where the -p1 comes in, which means one qualifier is stripped
off the filename as it occurs in the patch.

I don't know about removing an entire package set, but I have, installed
via FTP from dir structure that didn't contain all of the i18n files for
KDE (among other 'missing/useless to me' files).

That installation was successful. You might find similar success.

Applying a Patch

I'm trying to apply a patch to the kernel and it isn't working. What am I

The 2.4.7 stream goes up to -7. I'm building from the 2.4.17 stream
(labeled "August 2001 stream" on Developerworks...)

I'm convinced there is a problem with this patch:
linux-2.4.17-s390-4-iucv.tar.gz

Oh dear, I really seem to have confused the issue. :-(

To attempt to clarify:
- I have SuSE 2.2.16 running under VM/ESA, at work.
(yes, it's authorized, just 100% unsupported, by mgmnt).
- This is backlevel, so I want to install the SuSE sles beta.
- I have a budget of $0.00 (which rounds out to
0.00 Shekels) for buying CDs and/or support,
so I am downloading the sles to burn onto a CD.
- At work I have no access to a burner either, so I am
doing all of this at home, in W98.
- I have downloaded the entire /cd1 directory tree
and find that all the 'link' files were downloaded
as the full file, giving me a total of about 720MB
of data - which I cannot fit on a CD.

My question was: is there a known method to create
a SuSE sles CD under W98, or, are there any pointers
on how to trim the data down to .LE. 700MB (or
preferably .LE. 650MB)?
For example, I find what look like multiple KDE
language files:
2,461,142 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-es.rpm
4,599,479 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-fr.rpm
1,014,120 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-it.rpm
1,785,708 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-nl.rpm
638,121 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-pl.rpm
2,109,617 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-pt.rpm
1,680,082 17/10/01 0:00 kde-i18n-ru.rpm

If I have no use for Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch,
Polish, Portuguese, or Russian, is it safe to just delete
them, or will they be missed?

Or, is there any danger in simply deleting the 30MB
/tex2 directory, apparently part of latex, if I have no use
for latex? Will it be missed?

Thank you, and sorry for not being more understandable
the first time,
Shimon

Re: Samba downloading printer drivers

2002-09-03 Thread Michael MacIsaac

Josh,

Thanks, yes I had that parameter set.

I was successful in getting a Windows 2000 server to upload the drivers to
a working Linux printer - not via the Add Printer Wizard (APW), but by
adding the Samba-defined printer (via the [printers] share). I still have
to find time for testing. Because Windows doesn't find the drivers, it asks
for them and copies them to \\my.samba.server\[print$]\path\W32X86 and adds
them to a new directory named '2' . To get the APW working, apparently you
need a script via the "addprinter command" to add the new printer to
/etc/printcap and recycle the print server - perhaps a bit too magical for
its own good. Are you using a script? I still need to test uploading
Windows 9x drivers and using them from a 9x client.
