Samba

2005-08-26 Thread Brad Brewer
I have a quick question. Is anyone using Samba running under linux on the
zSeries? If so, what's the number of clients you have connecting and the
performance of the box?

Reason - We have a large Novell server having some scalability issues and
we are trying to look at options. Currently we have 10,000+ connections
and 4 TB of DASD being utilized by this box, so any solution needs to be
scalable and reliable.

Thanks,

Supporting zLinux

2005-08-12 Thread Brad Brewer
Just a couple of quick questions.
Does anyone use any 3rd party tool, like OmegaMon, to monitor zlinux?
Has anyone every tried to implement CA's eTrust ACF2 Security for zLinux?
Has anyone tried doing volume level backups using FDR or DFSMS?
Do companies have a production control area monitoring the monitor? Or do
you page when alerts happen?

Reason for questions. We are trying to build a case for the use of zLinux
in our shop. Management wants to be assured that all the pieces are there
before they will go forward. Thus the fact finding mission.

Other than the idiotic requirement for SCSI tape drives and the enormous
CPU
consumption of the client, no, it pretty much works as documented. What
problems have you had?

Brad,

Below are two links to sites that list applications that have been
ported to the
mainframe linux platform.

The first site is a listing of ISV venders that have ported their linux
applications.

http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/solutions/s390da/linuxproduct.html

This next site is a listing of IBM applications. You can download a matrix
here.

   http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/os/linux/software.html

Mark Post also maintains a website that has numerous links to other
mainframe linux websites.

  http://linuxvm.org/

Being in a support role I work with many customers. I would have to say
that the applications that
are being run is a mixture. The most popular applications I can think of
that many use are:

Websphere, DB2, DB2 Connect, MQ, Tivoli, Oracle, Apache, Tomcat, Samba,
Print applications,

All,

I was wondering what type of applications are companies using zLinux for,
because I have seen a lot of Oracle questions, but are there other
applications using zLinux?

Also, has the implementation of zLinux been a pretty successful one?

Thanks in advance.

It would have been quite painful.

You can indeed boot NT just fine on Bochs on S/390 but I really can't
recommend it.
