Re: Issue cloning RHEL server

2018-08-03 Thread Feller, Paul
I wanted to update everyone on our issue. Here is the comment from my team
member who is working the issue.

I've isolated the problem to the disk copy using the dd utility rather than the
mount and update of the cloned root file system as I first thought. I've found
that if I use the 'oflag=direct' option on the dd utility that it appears to
keep the I/O from overwhelming the DASD subsystem. At this time we're talking
with the vendor about what the root cause of the I/O errors is.

If this is a synchronous mirror, something seems wrong. Is it really a
synchronous mirror primary? It's sort of acting like an as-yet-unpopulated
flashcopy target, which is inappropriate for a cloning operation (IMO).

There is no such thing as I/O errors ever being "ok" in any sense of the
word during a copy operation. "Detected capacity change"? A capacity
change event is driven by hardware and it's not something you expect to see
during a copy. (Assuming Linux isn't mis-reporting the event.)

Mike, interesting question. The DASD subsystem is an EMC VMAX3 all flash

Paul,

I don't want to point fingers, but is it possible there is a defect with your
disk controller? That code has (had) been fairly well used, and I've never
seen errors with file system corruption. Not good.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Issue cloning RHEL server

One of my team members is trying to run the cloning process described in "The
Virtualization Cookbook for z/VM 6.3, RHEL 6.4 and SLES 11 SP3 October 2013,
January 2014 (SG-248147-00)". I believe the process has worked in the past.
But as things go the environment has changed over time.

Here is the question from the team member.

We are still using the cloning process documented in, and scripts provided
with, "The Virtualization Cookbook for z/VM 6.3, RHEL 6.4 and SLES 11 SP3
October 2013, January 2014 (SG-248147-00)". It's been sometime since I last
used the process to create a new zLinux system and when I try now I'm finding
that the procedure to update the IP information on the clone copy corrupts one
or more of the copy's file systems. I can use DDR to build a bootable system
from the gold image so I'm fairly sure the dasd copy process is working ok.
The gold image is not corrupted. It boots without an error and so does the DDR
copy.

We're currently running z/VM 6.4 (RSU1801). The 'LNXADMIN' system is running
Linux version 2.6.32-504.8.1.el6.s390x (Red Hat 4.4.7-4) and that's what we're
cloning. Has anyone experienced this problem and found a work around?

Thanks..

Issue cloning RHEL server

2018-07-25 Thread Feller, Paul

Thanks..

Re: hyperpav setup

2014-11-05 Thread Feller, Paul
First thing is does your DASD subsystem support HyperPAV? You will not get
very far if the DASD subsystem does not have that feature defined. Second the
IOGEN must be setup to allow for BASE and ALIAS devices. After all of that is
in place you can then worry about the z/VM and zLinux definitions.

Question about going from z/VM 5.4 to z/VM 6.3

2014-08-05 Thread Feller, Paul
We have a configuration of three VM lpars running 5.4. We share RACF and
DIRMAINT across all three lpars. This is a Linux only environment under VM.
We have started the planning of converting to 6.3. In talking with some people
from IBM we have determined that we should not try to share DIRMAINT between
the 5.4 systems and 6.3 systems. We are thinking about SSI and what it could
do for us. We are looking at how do we migrate to 6.3.

One option that came up was a big bang approach. The idea being we create a
three system SSI cluster 2nd level and test as much as we can. Even if we
didn't do SSI we would still create all three new systems 2nd level so we could
test the RACF and DIRMAINT sharing. Then on some weekend during our
maintenance window we would bring down the three 5.4 systems and startup the
new 6.3 systems 1st level. Do as much testing as we can and if nothing breaks
move forward.

Has anyone tried to do this type of migration to 6.3? Have our wheels come off
the train for even thinking about doing the migration this way?

Thanks..

Re: [ANNOUNCE] s390 31 bit kernel support removal

2014-02-13 Thread Feller, Paul
This has been an interesting email string to read. One question I would have
is if companies are not upgrading hardware (for whatever reason) are they
really looking at upgrading the software. Would it be the case that both the
hardware and software are doing the job and there is no need (or desire) to
upgrade the software.

Also there is the issue of the more (features/hardware) you try to support, the
more complex things become, the bigger the foot print of the software. I would
think it would also get harder to do newer release or to add new functionality.

Thanks..

It's not that weird if it's the most stable system you have and it has enough
spare capacity to do the job adequately. As you know from experience, in these
very little customers, that's likely to be the case. They might not have any
other choice with spending freezes in effect -- even PCs cost money.

Re: Z9 to Z114, Z/VM5.4 to Z/VM6.2 and moving Z/OS to a guest?

2013-05-28 Thread Feller, Paul
I can answer #3. Yes z/VM 5.4 will run on a z114. We are running it on a z196
(big brother to z114), but we had to apply maintenance to z/VM 5.4.

You can find a list of PTFs for z/VM 5.4 to support the z196 and z114 at

Hi list

Looking for the way forward.

Have a Z9 with 1 CP and 5 IFL's. Have 4 X Z/VM 5.4 LPARS with various versions
of SUSE Linux running as guests and a Z/OS Prod and Test Lpar.

Are installing a Z114 in a few weeks time and would like to upgrade to Z/VM 6.2
also

Questions.

1) Is it easier to move the Z/VM 5.4 Lpars over with the Suse Guest's and then
upgrade to Z/VM 6.2? Or should I install Z/VM 6.2 and then move the guests
(Will keep all of the device address's the same on the new machine.)

2) According to IBM Z/OS 1.7 will not run natively in an LPAR on the Z114. We
need to run it under Z/VM as a guest. Has anyone run into this problem? -
Though I would create a separate Lpar with Z/VM and 2 X Z/OS guests (Prod an
Test)

3) Does Z/VM 5.4 run on a Z114?

Re: Linux EAV and DFSMSDSS

2013-01-11 Thread Feller, Paul
I don't have the EAV disk but we do use z/OS DFDSS to backup and restore Linux
disk. The main thing is to have the control cards setup properly for both the
backup and restore. Here is an example of the backup and restore of a 3390
mod9 format.

DUMP -
 INDD(DASD)-
 OUTDD(TAPE1) -
 ADMINISTRATOR -
 CONCURRENT-
 CPVOLUME -
 OPTIMIZE(4) -
 TRKS(0,0,10016,14)

RESTORE -
  ADMINISTRATOR -
  TRKS(0,0,10016,14)-
  INDD(TAPE1) -
  OUTDD(DASD) -
  CPVOLUME -
  PURGE

I'm not sure what it would look like for a EAV volume.

ADR024E (ttt)-m(yy), TRACKS/OUTTRACKS VALUE IS INVALID FOR DEVICE.
VALID CYLINDER RANGE IS 0 TO X'ccc'. VALID TRACK RANGE IS 0 TO
   X'h'

Explanation: The following values are not valid for the specified device
types: (1) the range specified in the TRACKS keyword of a DUMP, COPY,
RESTORE, or PRINT, or (2) the range specified for the OUTTRACKS keyword
for COPY or RESTORE. The TRACKS values must fall within the cylinder and
track range indicated in the message. The and are high cylinder
and head numbers, respectively, in decimal notation.

System Action: The task ends. Processing continues with the next control
statement. The return code is 8.

Anyone doing his Linux backups (and restore) with DFSMSDSS maybe?

A friend wanted to start using EAV and defined some 170G disks,
through DEVNO managed on z/VM. And while it seems the backup may have
worked, the restore certainly doesn't and complains with ADR024E and
some strange cylinder range. I'm told the big disks go in cylinder
managed space rather than track managed, but my source did not have
APAR or further detail.

The customer is reluctant to put his crown jewels on a disk with no
backup. Anyone got the recipe for backup & restore?

Thanks, Rob

Re: Adding LCPUS to a LPAR dynamically

2012-08-09 Thread Feller, Paul
I've only done this with my z/OS lpars, but in the HMC profile you can have
reserve CPs defined to the lpar. The number of reserve CPs can be more then
the number of physical CPs. If you dynamically add move physical CPs to your
CEC you can then bring online more logical CPs to one or more lpars. As far as
I know you can't have more "active" logical CPs then there are physical CPs.

My z/VM lpars are only using IFLs so I have all of the IFLs defined to each
lpar.

Hi

I think I know the answer to this but wanted to confirm.

If I need to add Logical CPUS to an LPAR does this take an IPL of the LPAR to
get them in ?

Also if I wanted to add more Logical CPUS to the LPAR than there are physical
ones defined can I do this. This would be to avoid the need to IPL if we added
more Physical CPUS in the future ?

MIDAWs support and SLES9 & SLES10 under z/VM 5.3

2009-06-07 Thread Feller, Paul
We are looking at activating MIDAWs support on one of our disk subsystems.
The disk subsystem is split between z/OS and z/VM (5.3 RSU 0802). I see that
z/VM support MIDAWs for guest operating systems. My question is does SLES9 or
SLES10 have any support in it for MIDAW. I did search the Novel website but
did not get any hits.

MIDAW support and SLES9 & SLES10 under z/VM 5.3

2009-06-05 Thread Feller, Paul
We are looking at activating MIDAW support on one of our disk subsystems. The
disk subsystem is split between z/OS and z/VM (5.3 RSU 0802). I see that z/VM
support MIDAWs for guest operating systems. My question is does SLES9 or
SLES10 have any support in it for MIDAW. I did search the Novel website but
did not get any hits.

Re: Z/Linux CKD DASD migration from one DASD Subsystem to another

2009-01-21 Thread Feller, Paul
We used a product that is z/OS based to move the disk. The product is called
TDMF (from IBM). We would shut down the Linux guests and z/VM to move the
disk. Before the move we updated the z/VM system config for any address
changes. After the move we restarted everything and nobody complained.

Re: mixing IFLs and GPs in an LPAR

2008-06-19 Thread Feller, Paul
From the announcement information for the z10.

Increased flexibility with z/VM-mode partitions

System z10 EC provides for the definition of a z/VM-mode partition
(LPAR) containing a mix of
processor types including CPs and specialty processors IFLs, zIIPs,
zAAPs, and ICFs. With the
planned z/VM support, this new capability increases flexibility and
simplifies systems
management by allowing z/VM to manage guests to operate Linux on System
z on IFLs, to
operate z/VSE and z/OS on CPs, to offload z/OS system software overhead,
such as DB2
workloads, on zIIPs, and to provide an economical Java execution
environment under z/OS on
zAAPs, all in the same VM LPAR.

You may want to look at the "Upgrade 2094DEVICE, subset 2094/ZVM"

We are running production work on zVM 3.1 (don't ask why) running 2nd

until this change: Hardware was upgraded from z990 to z9 . Now guest
zVM3.1 is running 100% cpu; 1st level zVM 5.1 is running 100% CPU. We
can't go back to z990 because many more zOS are running in other LPARs.

Since 3.1 is out-of-support, no IBM help. Please, please help.

When EXECIO receives a return code from a CMS I/O operation it adds 100
to generate a return code As the operation is DISKW one can speculate
that the I/O request was FSWRITE.
Return code 13 from FSWRITE indicates disk is full (or your SFS file
space limit is reached)

Watch how much memory you get on the z9 BC. The size of the HSA jumps
up a large amount. We just installed a z9 BC as an external coupling
facility. We set it up for no dynamic IO changes and the HSA is still
1728 meg.

We are running on a MP2000 with 1 gig of memory. Out of that 1 gig comes
the HSA plus additional storage CP needs to allocate dynamic devices. We
have several VSE guests to support plus some CMS workload. Occasionally
during the day, we have file transfers from VSE to Windows going through
a 600 MB v-disk. The paging load during the file transfers just kills
CMS response time. Even taking a bit more main storage to increase the
HSA for dynamic I/O just isn't a good idea.

Now, if our plans to purchase a z9 BC go through, we'll be laughing.

within the Hardware Storage Area (HSA) that is allocated fixed on

requirements for issuing dynamic config commands is probably to small to
measure. (Barton/Rob?)

Funny, I was just looking into using dynamic I/O on our box. See
http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/epubs/pdf/hcsg1b20.pdf, Part 2 Using
Dynamic I/O Configuration.

In our case we won't use it. We are memory constrained at times, and
don't need the aggravation of performance problems caused by the extra
memory demands of dynamic I/O.

Re: Question about using z/VM DCSS for sharing code under Linux

2007-06-03 Thread Feller, Paul
Thanks for all of the replies that I have received. One of my concerns
is that we have at this point only done one application on Linux. That

My concern is that there are enough challenges with moving the work load
without also trying to do the DCSS stuff at the same time.

I pretty much disagree. Tools are there, lots of storage savings
possible. One system I
look at, i expect to save over 1/2 GB of REAL storage with xip
implementation. machines do not need to be identical, it just takes an
understanding of how to implement, what to include and specifically how
to measure it.

Question about using z/VM DCSS for sharing code under Linux

2007-06-01 Thread Feller, Paul
I was wondering how many people are using DCSS to share code under
Linux? At this time we are looking at about 12 to 15 Linux guest
divided across two lpars. It is my understanding the Linux guest will
be running WebSphere and Oracle. I have found some information on
setting up the environment. The doc talks about performance gains and
memory savings that has some people here interested in looking at DCSS.
We are running z/VM 5.1 and SuSE 9 sp3.

Given the number of servers (real and virtual) that can exist how do you
assign host names while avoiding dupliates?

We have come up with an 8 character host name standard that will also be
the z/vm guest name. The first 5 positions vary depending upon the
location, the os and the function with the last 3 positions being 001 to
999 to ensure a unique name. Right now an excel worksheet is used. This
is not something that is new so my thinking was that there had to be an
application for assigning host names and tracking information about
them.

Does anyone know of one?

The servers TOD is synchronized to STP or the Sysplex Timer by the LPAR
LIC. The logical
partition has a logical TOD offset from the processor TOD, which may be
set by z/VM during
IPL. If a synchronization check occurs, the LPAR LIC adjusts the logical
TOD offset for each
logical partition. To zero out the offset, the logical partition must be
deactivated and activated
again."

I'm confused as well. And it has been awhile since I played with this
(early days of sysplex timers, ETR, et al.)

Doesn't the z9 have a *hardware* clock *AND* a TOD clock? And isn't the
hardware clock be set by the Sysplex timer? In addition to John's NTP
daemon idea, can't z/VM get its time from the hardware clock and
subsequently z/Linux underneath z/VM?

Or am I wrong about the hardware clock and the rest is my personal pipe
dream? :-(

I'm still a bit confused. I know that z/VM cannot set its clock to the
STP time source. But why couldn't the Linux systems under z/VM use XNTP
to set their clock to the z/OS value? z/OS 1.7 can run an NTP daemon
which the Linux instances should be able to use. I hope that would be
"close enough".

Re: 2074 and Optica relocation

2006-07-19 Thread Feller, Paul
Could the devices on the converter channels come online to z/VM?
If yes, than the devices may come online when VM reacts to the channel
drop and recover. I think VM will look down the channel to see if there
are any devices for it to bring online. I have run into this before.
At that point you just have to vary offline the devices.
If no, than no problem, just some error messages.

Subject: 2074 and Optica relocation

We have a z800 with a z/VM LPAR and three z/OS LPARs. The z/VM LPAR
supports two Linux guests used to host test and production TSM servers.
We have to relocate some mainframe peripherals to accomodate
installation of new non-mainframe equipment. Specifically, we have to
relocate a 2074 console controller and a rack containing a number of
Optica ESCON to parallel channel converters. The z/VM system does not
use any of the I/O devices connected through Optica converters, but the
channel paths involved are visible to the z/VM LPAR.

My co-workers want to take down all the LPARs during the equipment move.
They argue that we don't know how z/VM will respond to interrupts
resulting from I/O devices being removed and replaced.
Scheduling downtime is difficult, since the TSM servers are busy running
backups at night, while the z/OS applications are heavily used during
the day.
Has anyone done a similar equipment move with z/VM up and running?

Re: Moving from ESS 800 to DS8100

2006-05-22 Thread Feller, Paul
In my environment I shutdown the Linux guest and than ran the copy from
z/OS. I did not have to change any thing on the Linux side and was able
to restart the Linux guest without any problems. I was also moving the
VM system volumes so I had to shutdown VM. The software package that
was used renamed the original DASD VOLSERs to some other name when the
copy was done. This was done to avoid duplicate VOLSERs.

If I had not shutdown VM I would have had to take the original Linux
DASD offline to VM before the move. When the move was done I would have
had to put the new volumes online to VM.

Thanks for the great information and detailed instructions. You have
saved me bogo mips (millions of instances perusing and searching). One
further question. I do have a z/OS system to work with and have both
DFDSS and FDR as suggested in a subsequent post:

"I don't know if you have access to a z/OS system, I did. I had to move
my Linux DASD to a new DASD box. I was able to take the Linux systems
down for a few hours and move the DASD from a z/OS system. I did full
volume copies using a software package, but I think the same thing could
be done with DFDSS."

That being the case I would then start your process after "Once the two
copies are done". Right? The best part about this is that my
current environment is not changed and I can start all over if a mistake
is made.

The SLES system will be very easy, the CentOS one a little bit more
work because of the way Red Hat uses file system labels and puts those
in /etc/fstab.

For the sake of illustration, let's assume that your device numbers and
names for the SLES system are:
0300/dev/dasda1 mounted on /
0301/dev/dasdb1 mounted on /usr
0610/dev/dasdc1 (new /)
0611/dev/dasdd1 (new /usr)

If your partitioning and mounting scheme is more complex, this method
saves you even more time and trouble. Just expand the instructions to
cover all the partitions/file systems you might have.

Do an internal Linux disk to disk copy of the two disks:
dd if=/dev/dasda of=/dev/dasdc bs=4M
dd if=/dev/dasdb of=/dev/dasdd bs=4M
You can make the blocksize larger or smaller. Note that I used the
whole device nodename, not the partitions, i.e. dasda versus dasda1.
This makes sure the IPL text, partition tables, etc. get copied.

Before the next step, you may need to run fdasd on the two new volumes,
just to make sure the newly-created partition table gets read: fdasd
/dev/dasdc1 w fdasd /dev/dasdd1 w

Once the two copies are done, mount them on /mnt, as they would be on
the new storage array. mount /dev/dasdc1 /mnt mount /dev/dasdd1 /mnt/usr

chroot /mnt
This will cd to /mnt, then change the environment so that it now appears
to be the root directory, hence the name "change root." What you want
to do now is edit /etc/zipl.conf so that only the two new volumes are in
your dasd list. Save the changes, then re-run zipl. Make sure the
messages that come out look right. Then, re-run mkinitrd.

Once the new initrd has been created, I would check to make sure that
the DASD parameters that get imbedded in it are right: zcat
/boot/new.initrd.name > /tmp/initrd.nogz mount -o loop /tmp/initrd.nogz
/mnt cd /mnt Look at the linuxrc file to see what it's doing. I don't
recall if the initrd has a modules.conf/modprobe.conf in /etc (/mnt/etc
at the moment) or not. If it does, look in there.

If everything looks fine, cd out of /mnt, umount /mnt, and rm
/tmp/initrd.nogz. You should be ready for your changeover to the new
storage unit. If you IPL and things go horribly wrong, IPL off the old
device and try to fix what was wrong.

Note that if you have users or anyone else making changes after the
initial copy, you'll need to make those same changes to the new volumes.

Now, for the CentOS system, the same methodology will be used, except
for the file system labels. Once the two disks have been copied, you'll
need to change the file system labels on the new disks. Otherwise, when
you try to boot either the old system or the new one, you'll get
complaints about duplicate labels, and experience a whole lot of pain
(trust me on that one).

So, for each file system you have on your original disk, do: e2label
/dev/dasda1 e2label /dev/dasdb1

Note the label names. Say they are "/" and "/usr" respectively. Then
change them on the new file systems: e2label /dev/dasdc1 /new e2label
/dev/dadsd1 /usrnew

Once you mount /de

I have two zLINUX LPARS. One is SLESS 9 and the other is CentOS 4.
We are migrating from an ESS 800 to DS8100. All unit addresses for
DASD will change. Network address will not. Is there any documentation
on how to migrate to the new devices? Each zLINUX system has two 3390
Mod 9 volumes.

Any experiences, pointers or documentation would be appreciated.

What type of problems would you run into sharing the same SYSRES. I
thought there was some "stuff" that was updated on the SYSRES that
reflected the state of VM. Ex: Was VM shutdown cleanly. I run two VM

SPXTAPE will backup up the NSS and DCSS files. The exact command is in
the installation guide, it is one of the last things you do during the
install (at least I do).
