Re: What configurations are people using for Disaster Recovery for Linux under z/VM
At our shop we primarily use z/OS for production. We have complete DR routine software and we regularly have DR drills at least 4 times a year. With that in mind I found it easier to backup our VM using what is already in place for z/OS, namely varying the VM DASD online to our z/OS production system then using DFDSS in JCL. This will get you full volume backups for the VM LPAR. What it lacks in granularity it makes up for in complete DR with little hassle. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
How Do You Get Around Soft RAID Error
I have been trying (when I get time) to add a soft RAID to our TurboLinux 6.5 guest, running under VM 4.4.0. After trying a number of things with the DASD I always get the same result. I have been formating the DASD's before I try to do a mkraid, by using dasdfmt. The format works when I am going to just add a single DASD to Linux. However, I am not sure what I should use otherwise. Here is the error message and the RAIDTAB file I am using. [EMAIL PROTECTED] /root]# mkraid /dev/md0 handling MD device /dev/md0 analyzing super-block disk 0: /dev/dasdd, 2402640kB, raid superblock at 2402560kB disk 1: /dev/dasde, 2402640kB, raid superblock at 2402560kB disk 2: /dev/dasdf, 2402640kB, raid superblock at 2402560kB disk 3: /dev/dasdg, 2402640kB, raid superblock at 2402560kB mkraid: aborted, see the syslog and /proc/mdstat for potential clues. raiddev /dev/md0 raid-level 0 nr-raid-disks 4 persistent-superblock 1 chunk-size 4 device /dev/dasdd raid-disk 0 device /dev/dasde raid-disk 1 device /dev/dasdf raid-disk 2 device /dev/dasdg raid-disk 3 I looked in the /var/log/messages but it had nothing that would indicate would had failed. Storing large files on TurboLinux 6.5 for OS/390
I am aware that TurboLinux 6.5 is a relatively old platform, however I would imagine that it should be able to accomodate large files. I need to know how a filesystem can be made to span more that one DASD to store a file that is 10G or larger. We have triple density DASD (3390-3), but they only have a capacity of roughly 2.8G. If there is a way to issue mount or some other command that will allow a file to span DASD that would be greatly appreciated. Difficulty with TurboLinux disk
I am running TurboLinux 6.5 fot Z/OS. I have recently added and formatted a new DASD to the Linux guest and I have been attempting to copy my /usr directory to the new disk to give it more space. In the course of doing this I have to copy all of the files and dir's on the current /usr to the new one. However, when I attempt to do so the Linux guest will temporarily stall (as in not responsive). After the copy finishes, only part of the data has been copied and the new disk that I put on as mount point /mnt is no longer mounted. Could it be that the VM guest containing the Linux should be given more memory (currently 512M)? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
Adding DASD to TurboLinux 6.5
I have been attempting to add another DASD to TurboLinux (OS/390). I know I have done the CP directory entry correctly for the minidisk (cyl 1 not 0), and I have formatted it using ICKDSF. I run into difficulty when the Linux guest has the new disk and I try to do the insmod and the dasdfmt. The insmod appears to work okay, however the dasdfmt will not work and the Linux guest becomes disabled. As in not able to do common commands such as ls, vi or even to view a file. I cannot even issue shutdown, (the commands get an I/O error) so I have to crash the guest as in forcing it to logoff. Here is a sample of what I get on the VM cons log when this is happening; dasd:Cannot register to major no 94, rc = -16 dasd:Couldn't register successfully to major no 94 ll_rw_block: Trying to read nonexistent block-device 5e:01 (38954) EXT2-fs error (device unknown-block(94,1)): ext2_write_inode: unable to read ino de block - inode=71562, block=131264 Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how did you correct it. Release of CICS Transaction Server for zLinux
Is it the case that IBM will be coming out with a version of CICS that will run on SUSe Linux ? I have searched the web, however I have only gotten hits for CICS Transaction Gateway. Looking for X-windows server for TurboLinux
I have been running TurboLinux 6.5 on our z800 processor for the last 5 months. However I cannot seem to find a good XMCP based server. The X-windows server that came with the distribution seemed to work for a while but was very limited. I need to know if there is anything compatible that has good features. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. microcode Level for OS/390 Linux
I have found out that our 9672 processor is actually a G4 class. Does anyone have any info on microcode levels for a G4? The only thing in the pre-install manual is pertinent to G4/G5 and the Multiprise 3000 series. - Forwarded by Greg Evans/MOIS/Phila on 10/15/02 01:10 PM - Greg Evans 10/09/02 01:49 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:microcode Level for OS/390 Linux - Forwarded by Greg Evans/MOIS/Phila on 10/09/02 01:55 PM - Greg Evans 10/09/02 12:45 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject:microcode Level for OS/390 Linux I need to know what the right microcode level is for a 9672 (G5) processor to run Turbo-Linux . [no subject]
I have been trying to install TurboLinux 6.5 on our 9762-R35 (G4) box with no success. I made the IPL tape using the free distribution following the documentation to the letter. I wrote the 3 datasets LINUX390.IMAGE.TXT, LINUX390.PARM.LINE and LINUX390.INITRD.TXT to a 3480 cartridge using IEBGENR using three steps in that JCL, (each step writing the three datasets to tape). As far as I can tell I have done all of this correctly. I am thinking I might have a corrupted copy, however I do not get any disabled wait PSW or anything when I attempt to IPL the tape, the window message says "IPL COMPLETE". There is no error message generated to the HW console.I know this is not a case of the drive not being configured to the LPAR, I have been there already (thanks). I used another IPL'able tape to test the LPAR and that worked fine. The message at the top of the OS messages window was, "Hardware Interface Not Available" . I have been considering another distribution. If anyone else had this experience with TurboLinux please let me know how you managed to get around it.
