RHEL Linux training

2015-11-03 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Hi

I want to suggest some Linux training (z/Linux) for Administrators that are
currently mostly UNIX ADMINs. This customer is migrating from Solaris UNIX to
either x86 Linux or z/Linux. Does anyone have any recommendations for specific
training for experience UNIX or not so experience UNIX ADMINS that would be
helpful. If there are any specific training courses that you know about that
would touch on both x86 Linux and z/Linux that would be great!

Thanks for the help!!

Hi Dennis,

So I looked at this. My concern was if by assigning STANDBY memory to a guest
the memory actually would be taken up (that is not able to be used by others)
before it was actually put online to the guest. What I think I am reading is
that no it is not but the system in the case of SSI (LGR) needs to be aware of
the possibility that it could be turned on and hence needs to account for it on
the system that the guest is being relocated to.

I am looking at this correctly?

Thanks,

Terry

I'm not sure what Terry means by "won't count against the memory footprint".
Standby and reserved storage is included in the calculations to determine
whether a live guest relocation will put the target member at risk for running
out of page space. See the help files for messages HCP1811I and HCP1813I.

Terry,

You are right. Standby memory will not be allocated until you put it online on
Linux. Here we use to have all machines with a couple GB of standby memory (and
a couple processors too), so we can change it quickly when needed.

We have SLES11 here, and we can put memory online AND offline without having to
IPL the guest. The same for CPU.

Subject: Re: Adding memory dynamically to a RHEL6.5 guest running under z/VM 6.3

One way is to have standby memory defined.
For example, if you have user LINUX and want to have 512MB with the chance to
go up to 2G, then you add the 2G as max memory on the USER directory statement:

USER LINUX PASWD 512M 2048M G 64

Then add the following statement to the user directory to define the remaining
memory as standby:

COMMAND DEFINE STORAGE AS 512M STANDBY 1536M

If you set up the user like this, then from inside the Linux guest you can add
memory at run time with the chmem command. For example, to add extra 512 M run:

chmem -e 512M

Note that it is not always possible to return the standby memory that you have

Adding memory dynamically to a RHEL6.5 guest running under z/VM 6.3

2014-10-02 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Hi

I have a couple of guests that I need to add memory to without recycling the
guests. What are the steps and commands to accomplish this?

Thanks,

Terry

Exited my PuTTY session while signed on as INSTALL during initial z/Linux install

2014-08-29 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
HI

We are progressing through the initial RHEL 6.5 install and last night we got
out of our Putty session while still logged on as INSTALL user. Now today I am
unable to login as INSTALL, and I am receiving the following messages:

Login as: install
Welcome to the anaconda install environment 1.2 for zSeries

Loader has already been run. Starting shell.

Any suggestions on how to get back to where I was yesterday?

Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-26 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Scott,

We could not get to the Server that the source was on. That is why we
downloaded to the workstation. From there we used FTPSERVE to get it in z/VM.

Just curious - couldn't you have FTP'd to the server where the .iso image
is and done a GET of the install files? Using z/VM as an FTP server was
not an option in our case -- nor was reaching the install server via FTP from
z/VM -- that's why I 'had' to use 3270 file xfer and resorted to VMARC, etc.

But it sounds in your case like you could have reached the install server from
z/VM via FTP rather then have to do a workstation shuttle or get
z/VM's FTPSERVE working?Or is this what you did do and I just misread
your post?

Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-26 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Ok, we finally got this to work. Ultimately we had to get FTP working and load
using that. Even though the MD5 checksum done on z/VM against the images loaded
on z/VM showed a different DISGEST value for the INITRD and KERNEL images from
the original HTTP server source (ISO) we tried it anyway. Well it worked! So
the difference was how we got it from our workstation to z/VM, which was using
FTP instead of the PCOMM terminal emulator SEND/RECEIVE.

Not sure why the MD5 checksum did not match but I will talk to Dave to see If
he has any idea as to why.

Thanks for the help and hope this helps other folks who may run into the same
issue.

Re: Performance Toolkit and zLinux

2014-08-25 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
I am in the same boat. I would like to use Velocity for my client but since is
a POC they want to sick with something that is already there like PTK. However
I am concerned when the time comes to monitor the z/Linux part of this PTK will
not do the trick without some other piece of software to collect the Linux
stuff. Not my first choice but I don't have much of a choice at this time.

Normally, you should see the content of the parmfile after the Kernel command
line message. That seems to be missing here. Did you add the GENERIC.PRM file
to CMS, and did you adopt it to your environment?

Alan is referring to the CMS/TSO Pipelines Runtime Library Distribution which
you can find here:

http://vm.marist.edu/~pipeline/

This version of Pipes supports significant new function over the version that
is shipped with z/VM.

could you please quote the parmfile that you use for the installation here
somewhere? One issue that is found in the logs is this one:

No filesystem could mount root, tried: iso9660

I guess that this actually should be a CPIO archive and nothing like

iso9660 (I am not from redhat, thus I never tried).

I also heard rumors, that the parmfile on redhat ISO images was sometimes
corrupted, and thus it should be fixed before you can use it.

The message like

   RAMDISK: incomplete write (4096 != 65745920)

also points to a broken parmfile. So, please show us the parmfile (this should
actually only be a text file with maybe 2 lines, so no big deal for the list).

Spin-up the CD/DVD in a workstation (esp a Linux box or Mac) and run 'md5sum'
against the INITRD file on the disk.
Compare that hex string with the published MD5 value where you downloaded it.

Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-25 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Thanks Alan.
< If it were at the source, then everyone would have the same issue.>

I don't think this was tried anywhere else other than at the z/VM level. The
x86 REDHAT folks loaded the ISO files to a HTTP server for us and we downloaded
it from there. We used the PCOMM SEND/REC protocol first and then FTP to
download to z/VM to no avail . So not sure how to tell if the source (At the
ISO level) is corrupted or not?

It isn't the kernel since you can't see the kernel running. As I said
previously, I think the ramdisk (INITRD) is corrupted. Note the "incomplete
write". Whether is was corrupted on upload to VM, to your workstation, or at
the source is TBD. If it were at the source, then everyone would have the same
issue.

Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-25 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Alan,

If the theory is that the INITRD file is somehow corrupted and say the source
(ISO) is ok could it be that it is getting messed up when transferring to our
workstation first and then loading it from there to the z/Linux guest?

If so can I take it directly from the HTTP server where the source files sit to
the z/Linux guest skipping the load down to the workstation? If so what is the
best way to do this? I can put the HTTP URL in the parmfile?

Thanks Alan!

Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-25 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Hi

Still having issues. We have opened a PMR with REDHAT. In the meantime we are
punching the PARMFILE now but still getting the same error. We tried it with
multiple memory settings. This time it was set to 3G.

Could the INITRD corrupted at the ISO level ? Or is it the Kernel Image that is
the problem? We have been concentrating on the INITRD file up to this point.

Since I can't seem to see anything else that may be an issue we will try to
download the INITRD file again. We downloaded from the Server using the PCOMM
SEND/RECEIVE protocol initially we may try using FTP this time.

Looks like a corrupt bootstrap file to me.

Issue a #CP IPL CMS, and them run a FILEL. If your bootstrap files (INITRD and
KERNEL) are not FIXED 80, they are corrupt.

If you upload them using FTP, use BIN and QUOTE SITE FIX 80 before sending the
files. If you use your 3270 emulator to send the files, see if you used Fixed
80 as the record format.

Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-21 Thread Martin, Terry Contractor
Hi

We are trying our initial install of z/Linux under z/VM. We have received the
files required for the load. We have built the z/Linus guest and are executing
the EXEC to start the build. The following is what receive when we execute the
execute. This is release RHEL6.5 running on z/VM 6.3 (1302).

Any help would be appreciated! Let me know if you anymore information that may
be helpful.
