Subject: Draft Redpaper: z/VM and Linux on IBM System z: Implementing a
Shared Root File System

Hello all linux-390 and ibmvmers,

A draft Redpaper Sharing and maintaining Linux under z/VM is now up on
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/redp4322.html?Open

Here is the abstract:
Large operating systems, such as z/OS(r), have, for several decades,
leveraged shared file structures. The benefits are reduced disk space,
simplified maintenance and simplified systems management. This Redpaper
describes how to create a Linux(r) solution with shared file systems on
IBM(r) System z? hardware (the mainframe) running under z/VM(r). It also
describes a maintenance system where the same Linux image exists on a
test, maintenance and gold virtual servers. This redpaper is based on
z/VM 5.3 and SLES 10.

The associated tar file of sample scripts and EXECs should be on
ftp://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/REDP4322
(It seems that directory has not yet been created, but should be soon.)

Any feedback off-list (or on-list) would be appreciated.

Take a look at CaSpool. Good product.

I suggest that you urge your management to buy a package you don't have
to support. (I still find it hard to believe that CICS and IMS don't
speak TCP/IP for printing.)

If you want to install and support your own, there was a package called
SNAPRSIM written by Bruce Crabill on the 1998 VM Workshop tape. I found
it
on the web at Fran Hensler's web site: http://zvm.sru.edu/~DOWNLOAD/ .
I
have been using this for several years and support several hundred
printers.

Have you thought about software like VPS

I have found a lot of good out of VPS, except for one thing.
 The price tag.
The last time I looked at it, we just couldn't afford it.
I can't go into many specifics, but it was going to be almost a
million for the first year and 200K for every year after.
 Not a very large shop.
