Re: question migrating an LPAR full of guests to a new machine

2012-05-23 Thread OAKES Roger * SDC
Regarding machine replacement, if you get newer model OSA's you may change from
one chpid per port to one chpid per port pair, which will force you to modify
your definitions in z/VM to point to the correct OSA Port in addition to the
correct memory range.

Not a big deal, but an owie if you miss it.

We recently did exactly the same jump. NPIV I guess was explained already
(we actually implemented NPIV and SAN after we moved to z114). I would
only suggest downloading and applying PTFs for z/vm. There were some pdfs
from IBM which specify which PTFs you have to have in your z/vm 5.4 for
z114. There aren't many but still, you should check this out.

You will have to slightly adjust your IOCP because some chpids changed in
z114. There are tools out there to remap those but for us, IBM guy did it
before we plugged in new machine. Guys who were setting up z114, moved all
LPARs configurations and uploaded new iocp.

Generally in our case it all went smooth and after 2hours we were up again.
Good luck

Re: IT staff integration?

2010-09-03 Thread OAKES Roger * SDC
In the development areas, I am aware of a number of folks that write
code in multiple languages, including Cobol and Cold Fusion, for
multiple platforms, z/OS and Windows.

In the SA teams, I tell people that I'm a member of our z/OS support
team, our z/Linux support team and our z/VM support team which does mean
that I'm probably incompetent on three major platforms :-). Before I
did z/OS I was in the disturbed systems area doing Windows and before
that OS/2. I'm an extreme case, mostly our Windows folks do Windows,
Linux do x86 Linux and so on. Our main z/VM SA started as a Linux
enthusiast and came to love z/VM. It can happen...

"generic" Linux sysadmnis and Windows admins?

porting it to zLinux.

Any experiences that can be shared would be appreciated.

Java Providers

My information may be dated, but at one point I read that we could only
use IBM Java on z/Linux. Does that match everyone's experience? Is
someone running a different Java on z/Linux, if so which distro and

Up to this point, it has been Oracle's (previously Sun's) policy that
for any architecture other than x86, and x86_64, it is up to the
hardware manufacturer to provide a Java implementation. I don't know if
any of the fanfare around the Oracle and IBM announcement to support
OpenJDK will change any of that or not. Somehow, I doubt it it will.
So, if you want a current version of Java, yes, the only one that will
run on Linux for System z is IBM's.

If that's a problem for you, please explain why. The SHARE Linux and VM
Program officers are trying to establish a working relationship with the
IBM team that develops their Java. We're interested in passing along
any instances of things that "don't work" or "don't work the same,"
etc., as Sun's Java.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx and search for

For Linux, SCOM only supports x86 and x86_64 although there is support
for other architectures.

Re: intro, & request for advice ...

2010-01-13 Thread OAKES Roger * SDC
Tuco, I'm a newbie on this list, I've done z/OS programming for fewer years
than you have but for longer than z/Linux. You might have seen me on the TCPIP
list.

A couple of thoughts -

Production means that the agency expects to have the same level of
infrastructure and operational support as z/OS. Since it's "On the Mainframe"
they're ignoring a huge piece of infrastructure because we made it work for
z/OS decades ago.

We had z/Linux project go from "skunkworks" to production without resolving all
the infrastructure and operational issues. It's not pretty. POR's, backup and
recovery, accounting, management, the list of things that you don't take into
account are impressive. We've spent several man months already and we're only
part way through making our installation fully production ready and billable.

I recommend that you push back. The only way I would run z/Linux on the LPAR
without z/VM is very early proof of concept, and even then I'm not sure.

HTH.

please allow me to introduce myself.
I am new to this listserver community.
I am an mvs systems programmer w/ about 30 years experience with ibm mainframe
o/s-s (s360 thru z/os), plus about 12 years experience w/ ibm’s
UnixSystemsServices/OpenEdition, and its related hierarchical file system (HFS).
I have been given a mission to install a Linux o/s on an IFL lpar on one of our
Z9 mainframe platforms, and hence have found my way here, to this community.
the PURPOSE of the Linux IFL lpar will be to host DB2Connect.
The install is going to be standalone directly into the IFL lpar (the
governmental agency I work for does not wish to spend any money for a Z/VM
license – or for anything else connected w/ this op.). So I’m also going to
need a FREE distribution of Linux. So far I have discovered about 3 of these
‘free’ Linuxes: Centos, Debian, and the one available from the marist.edu .
question: can anyone offer me some advice on which one I should use (please
keep in mind the purpose is to host DB2Connect) ?
question: can anyone recommend any good cookbook manuals to use? on my own,
I’ve discovered quite a few books out there on the internet, but I would like
to save some time and not have to download each one to check it out ….
question: anyone have any gp (general purpose, across the board) words of
wisdom he/she would care to share?

thank you for your indulgence.
