Somehow he needs to make the guest recognize a remote console.

https://www.google.com/search?q=linux+serial+console
Linux Serial Console. You must compile serial support into the kernel and not
as a module. It is possible to specify multiple devices for console output. You
can define a new kernel command line option to select which device(s) to use
for console output.

I recall a counterexample was OpenSolaris. It wouldn't run in
an LPAR, but only under VM. I suspect the matter was not "hid[ing]

And CMS? I understand modern CMS will not run in an LPAR but
will run under VM.

X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.104.17) (mystery to me)
iOS 14.2 (the latest) has:
X-Mailer: iPhone Mail (18B92)
MacOS Mojave (however obsolescent) has:
X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.3445.104.17)

Regardless, using:
Content-Type: multipart/alternative; ...

and making one alternative the text payload and the other the
vendor logo is just plain wrong; MIME violation.

And iOS 14.2 shows the same problem.

MacOS Snow Leopard provided a "View; Next Alternative".
I miss it for seeing bad MIME content.

Interesting. Does /dev/random use it? Which?

Apparently a DRNG is a PRNG with a ramdom (unlikely to repeat) seed.
What does the z15 DRNG use for that seed?

How is the TRNG implemented? Noise from a hot diode? Radioactive decay?
Counting photons from a beam splitter? Other (specify)? Trade secret?

I believe that was a successor and embedded the "Yale ASCII" which
was based on an IBM Series 1 minicomputer. Those provided the
hardware base for IND$FILE and Columbia Kermit, which switched
modes with a valid but improbable sequence of 3278 control

I believe the 3174 AEA was different. But it may have embedded
7171 firmware.

It went both ways. According to:

http://bitsavers.trailing-edge.com/pdf/ibm/3174/ZZ25-8524-0_3174_Asynchronous_Emulation_Adapter_Feature_Nov87.pdf

 IBM Internal Use Only
Introduction
Terminology
The 3174 Asynchronous Emulation Adapter (ABA) feature and Release 3 micro- code
provide the customer with increased connectivity by allowing the customer to:

• Use an ASCII device to communicate with an ASCII host

• Use an ASCII device to communicate with an IBM host

• Use a 3270 device to communicate with an ASCII host
^

• Use a 3270 CUT device in MLT (Multiple Logical Terminal) mode to have
multiple sessions with ASCII and IBM hosts.

I once tried the configuration I highlighted. Not very useful
to me since I had a real ASCII device on my desk. But the
emulation was surprisingly faithful.

Interesting. Your earlier post to LISTSERV:
file:///private/tmp/paulgilm/wlvtype%3FLINUX-VM.97234.html
... appears as unrendered base64 plus some headers I'd normally
not expect to see. If I scrape and decode the base64 I see
the image.

On an IMAP server, MacOS Mail.app renders the image apparently as
intended. iOS 14.2.2 shows a blank page.

I suspect Microsoft Outlook 16.0 created a minor structural error
which various viewers treat differently.

I've long known that OpenSolaris required VM. Maybe there was more context.

I can detect when a reconnect event happens, but there needs to be a way to
tell the kernel/driver “check the geometry and adjust accordingly”.

CMS, at least, handles this magnificently. I can be in a full screen XEDIT
session, disconnect my terminal (emulator) then reconnect with a different
geometry. XEDIT refreshes the screen correctly.

I can't change geometry without disconnecting, but that may be a limitation
of the terminal emulator.

One thing lost by using 3270 support - can’t spool the console. That’s a
different problem for a different thread. 😀

In CMS, my terminal is spooled. When I enter a full screen application
(XEDIT) spooling is suspended. when I return to 3215 emulation, spooling
continues. This probably depends on CMS making CP aware of the transition.

You might run c3270 under a "script" pty

and everything would be captured to ./typescript including 3270 data
streams. You probably don't want that.

Is it a basic limitation of UNIX that there's no way to connect a descriptor
to a running process? How does XEDIT->CMS->CP do it? I suspect the console
is never disconnected, just put in a dormant state. I believe when I
reconnect with a different geometry XEDIT fields an I/O error and causes a
WSF Query to be issued and processes the result.

SIGHUP? SIGTSTP? SIGWINCH? IIRC, I modified a SIGGWINCH handler long ago,
in a curses application. I think I caught the signal, queried the terminal
geometry, and updated some global variables.

TSO can't deal with it. An endless sequence of I/O errors and ops needs
to cancel the session.
