Re: Xymon

2019-01-23 Thread Stuart, David
Hi Martha,

Yes, z/VSE supports REXX, just not compiled REXX.

And IBM published a MIB for z/VSE a few years ago. I don’t remember where I
acquired a copy. I think it was about the same time they came out with the SNMP
'agent'.

Defining the template to match the MIB information is the big PITA, though.
There is a Xymon plugin named devmon, which is what we use to monitor the
network equipment, environmentals, etc.  It talks snmp, but has limited
capabilities.  There might be a newer one out there, I haven't kept up on it in
a few years.

I think the z/OS clients are also in REXX, so should be easy to port to VSE, if
it supports that.  (Sorry, I don't recall off the top of my
head.)  Then it is just a matter of updating the execs to look at the right
spots in the system.

Re: Xymon

2019-01-23 Thread Stuart, David
If Xymon can talk SNMP, which it probably can if it's monitoring network
equipment, there's an SNMP 'agent' (?) that's part of z/VSE that will tell you
if the System is responding, at a minimum. I believe there is other info you
can get from the SNMP 'agent' as well. I've played with it some, but we don’t
actually use it.

there.  (Richare you listening?)

If all else fails, I can pack up what I have and make them available somewhere.

2018-04-13 Thread Stuart, David
I run SCRT on my z/VSE Systems, and have been for a couple years, or so, now.
So, no, SCRT isn't just for z/OS.

Isn't the ibm tool just for z/os and at the LPAR level? nothing to do with
what goes on inside z/vm. nothing to do with what goes on inside linux for
specific licensing.

I've been asked to provide such information by another vendor, and that
function will be released shortly. This allows the 4 hour rolling average for
linux servers (x or z), pools of linux servers, groups of linux servers, and
can be done for applications inside linux as well.
It can also be used for VSE if anyone cares. So I've led the horse to
water.

Depending on your email client, you may be able to set up a 'rule' that moves
Marcy's posts back to your main inbox. If, in fact, that are being directed to

One of my favorites, but I don't know who to attribute it to:

"Don't be afraid to make mistakes, because if you're not making mistakes,
you're not doing anything. However, if you're making the same mistake over and
over again, then you're not learning anything."

Guess which the 'author' thought was the more serious 'crime'.

There are at least a bazillion (Google tells me) quotes about mistakes.

"So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because that's where you will
find success. On the far side of failure." Thomas J. Watson, Sr.

"It is much easier to be critical than to be correct." Benjamin Disraeli

"Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
Albert Einstein

Anyone who's ever accomplished anything -- done anything -- has made mistakes.
What have your mainframe career mistakes, teachable/learnable moments, painful
learning experiences, hard-knocks lessons, etc., been?
What errors have you seen or heard (and believed!) others make? What were the
consequences and, most important, what did you learn?

These might be technical or job/career related. What would you go back and tell
your younger self to do or not do? To do differently? What mistakes would you
help others avoid?

Please be (relatively) brief; if I need more information, I'll ask. And please
copy me directly so replies aren't buried in list digests.

Thanks...

Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

2014-08-26 Thread Stuart, David
Terry,

The thought that pops instantly to mind is 'code pages'. But I would presume
that all these transfers were in binary...

Subject: Re: Error when load z/Linux for first time

Ok. I got a z/VM MD5 checksum from Dave. We ran it against the INITRD IMG and
KERNEL IMG files and sure enough they did not match the MD5 value that was sent
with the RHEL ISO for these two files. So the assumption is corrupted files.
The files we downloaded from the HTTP source server to our workstation are
good. We ran a MD5 checksum on those and they match.

Our initial load of these files from our workstation down to z/VM was via the
PCOMM terminal emulator SEND/RECEIVE. We MD5 checked these files and they
don't match.

So since we have some security issues at this shop currently using FTPSERVE we
tried using FTP to move the files from our workstation to z/OS and then FTP
from z/OS to z/VM. Note using FTP all the way through.

We than did another MD5 checksum on the files on z/VM and they still don't
match. So it looks like something is happening to the files on transfer to z/VM.

Any help or ideas?

Thanks,

Terry
