Re: Migrating Linux on zFCP to new cpu
We moved from a z9 to a z196- new ficon express cards- new wwn's . The san team had to rezone/remask luns. We also had an issue that the folks who do hardware config's gave us wrong information as to what the new wwpn's were to be. The san team scrambled to rezone on the day of cut over. HCD folks said wwpn's changed after their gen and POR. Our servers have the linux OS on mainframe dasd - only application and database data was on san. So could bring up servers and look to see what the wwpn's really were. -Original Message- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:LINUX-390@VM.MARIST.EDU] On Behalf Of Sue Sivets Sent: Friday, October 14, 2011 7:44 PM To: LINUX-390@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Migrating Linux on zFCP to new cpu We are getting ready to move from our old cpu to a new z114. Re: Migrating Linux on zFCP to new cpu
Hi, If you are migrating (that is your CPU serial number does not change) and the migration plan includes moving the old FICON Express cards to the new machine then all you have to do is make sure the cards will receive the same CHPID numbers on your IODF. Other than that you don't have to do a thing (well maybe zoning - depends if you are using soft/hard zones - ask your SAN guys). If on the other hand you are replacing your FICON Express cards then the SAN guys will have to create new zones for the new WWPNs (as they will change with the new cards). If you are using NPIV then it is best to use the IBM WWPN prediction tool to make sure the new WWPNs numbers. You should supply this numbers to your SAN guys (you can use the tool if you are not using NPIV as well). Either way I can't see any reason for you to change your zfcp configuration on the Linux guest (all the Linux guest care about is the virtual fcp device and the target WWPNs - that is your disk subsystem that should not change during the migration). Hope this helps... Migrating Linux on zFCP to new cpu
Sue, I just had the fun of moving 32 linux guests with allocated fcp luns. When it comes down to it this really depends on what is changing to your connection to the san switch. The SAN team will have to rezone the luns to the wwpn's of the new cpu chpid (to the san team this is an HBA). If you are lucky and he new cpu connects to the same switches the linux side may not need to change, but if the luns are connected through different wwpn's on the switch side the zfcp config must reflect this. regards Phil Tully -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For more information on Linux on System z, visit http://wiki.linuxvm.org/
